LATERAL AND RADIAL TRUING Radial truing : vertical movement in the rim relative to the horizontal axis of the hub. Lateral truing : lateral movement in the rim relative to the vertical axis of the hub. The 2001 range wheels are delivered with maximum tolerances of radial and lateral truing respectively : - 0,4 mm . - 0,4 mm and 0,5 mm for wheels compatible with disc brakes (Crossroc® UST® Disc and Crossmax® UST® Disc). TOOLS NEEDED • 1 spoke wrench for the Crossride® Ceramic, Crossroc® UST®, Crossroc® UST® Disc, Cosmic® Elite and Classics SSC® wheels. • 1 spoke tension wrench and spoke maintenance wrench M40494 for Crossmax® UST® Disc wheel. • 1 Hozan tensionmeter for the Crossride® Ceramic, Crossroc® UST®, Crossroc® UST® Disc, Cosmic® Elite and Classics SSC® wheels. CAUTION : for the following operations, manipulating the integrated nipples on the Crossmax® UST®, Crossmax® UST® Disc and Ksyrium® SSC® wheels greatly affects the spoke tension and consequently the wheel adjustment. In the final phase of adjusting the tension, 1/4 turn of the nipple corresponds to about 0,3 mm of lateral rim movement. If there is radial movement :

1

Tighten a spoke on each side of the problem area. It is necessary to systematically work on both sides so as not to affect the lateral movement of the wheel. If there is lateral movement :

2

You must always work on the 2 successive spokes on the same side as the problem area and : - increase the tension (1/4 - 1/2 turn maximum) on the spoke that is closest to the “hollow” side of the problem area. - loosen the tension (1/4 - 1/2 turn maximum) on the spoke that is closest to the “bump” side of the problem area. It is necessary to work this way so as not to affect the radial movement of the wheel. Tension of spokes :

3

After these modifications have been made (radial and lateral truing), check the tension of the spokes to ensure that it doesn’t go above the following values : - 90 - 110 divisions (70 - 90 kg) for a front or right rear Crossride® Ceramic wheel using a Hozan type of tensionmeter. - 90 - 110 divisions (80 - 100 kg) for a front or right rear Classics SSC® wheel using a Hozan type of tensionmeter. - 110 - 140 divisions (90 - 120 kg) for a front or right rear Crossroc® UST®, Crossroc® UST® Disc wheel using a Hozan type of tensionmeter. - 100 - 120 divisions (110 - 140 kg) for a front or right rear Cosmic® Elite wheel using a Hozan type of tensionmeter. Crossmax® UST® Disc : 110 - 140 kg for the front wheel and 120 - 150 kg for the rear wheel on the free wheel side.

RADIAL SPOKE

ADJUSTMENT FOR TRUING AND ROUNDNESS

CAUTION

Roundness : vertical movement in the rim relative to the horizontal axis of the hub.

1. When a spoke is bent or broken, the spokes that are intact are under excess tension. To avoid breaking more spokes and eliminate this excess tension, you must loosen all the spokes. After replacing the defective spokes, increase the tension to its original level. This modification is not necessary on the Crossmax® UST® and Ksyrium® SSC® wheels.

Truing : lateral movement in the rim relative to the vertical axis of the hub. 2000 line wheels are delivered with maximum tolerances of :

2. On the Cosmic® Carbone SSC® wheel, if the breakage seems to be the result of fatigue, it is recommended to replace all the spokes on the side where the breakage occured.

- 0,4 mm for the roundness. - 0,3 mm for the trueness.

TOOLS NEEDED

TOOLS NEEDED

• 2 x 5 mm Allen wrenches.

• 1 spoke wrench for Crossride® and Cosmos® wheels.

CAUTION : for the following operations, manipulating the integrated nipples on the Crossmax® UST® and Ksyrium® SSC® wheels greatly affects the spoke tension and consequently the wheel adjustment. In the final phase of adjusting the tension, 1/4 turn around the nipple corresponds to about 0,3 mm of lateral rim movement.

• 1 tensionometer Hozan type for Crossride®, Cosmos® and Cosmic® Carbone SSC® wheels.

If there is radial movement :

• Mavic thread lock M40315. • Grease.

Tighten a spoke on each side in the problem area.

Disassemble the wheel (see pages 11 - 12). This procedure is not necessary on the rear Crossmax® UST® and Ksyrium® SSC® wheels. Just remove the spoke retention clips on the free wheel side without twisting it.

1

It is necessary to systematically work on both sides so as not to affect the lateral movement of the wheel.

CAUTION

If there is lateral movement :

2

Loosen the adjustment nut one turn in order not to damage the bearings.

You must always work on the 2 successive spokes on the same side as the problem area and :

Do not manipulate the free wheel body FTS kit (risk of losing the free wheel mechanism) and hold the free wheel body FTS kit in place on the hub to avoid losing oil.

- increase the tension (‘1/4 - 1/2 turn maximum) on the spoke that is closest to the "hollow" side of the problem area. - loosen the tension (‘1/4 - 1/2 turn maximum) on the spoke that is the closest to the "bump" side of the problem area. It is necessary to work this way so as not to affect the radial movement of the wheel. Tension of spokes:

3

After these modifications have been made (adjustment for truing and roundness), check the tension of the spokes to ensure that it doesn’t go above the following values :

2

Remove the axle (except for rear Crossmax® UST® and Ksyrium® SSC® wheels).

3

With a spoke wrench, loosen the nut of the defective spoke.

4

Remove the spoke or the spoke head by the hub body.

5

Place the new spoke by the interior of the hub with the head supporting : - the hub for Crossride® and Cosmos® wheels. - the hub for Crossmax® UST® and Ksyrium® SSC® wheels greasing the spoke head (contact zone between the spoke and the socket). - the grooved washers for the Cosmic® Carbone SSC® wheel.

6

Only for rear Crossmax® UST® and Ksyrium® SSC® wheels, replace the spoke retention clips on the free wheel side without twisting it.

7

Screw the nut of the socket and increase the tension of the spokes after putting one or two drops of Mavic thread lock on the socket thread (Crossmax® UST® and Ksyrium® SSC® only) : - 70 - 90 kg for a front Crossride® or Cosmos® wheel. - 110 - 130 kg for a front Cosmic® Carbone SSC® wheel. - Ksyrium® SSC® : 90 - 110 kg for the front wheel and 130 - 150 kg for the rear wheel on the free wheel side. - Crossmax® UST® : 100 - 120 kg for the front wheel and 130 - 150 kg for the rear wheel on the free wheel side.

8

Install the axle if it is necessary (see pages 11 - 12).

9

Adjust the bearing free play (install the wheel to the frame and put the bike down on the floor) : the adjuster nut contacts the external face of the bearing when using hub wrench M40123. Repeat this operation if the adjustment doesn’t seem to be optimum.

10

Check the adjustment for truing and roundness (see page 16).

11

For the Crossmax® UST® and Ksyrium® SSC® wheels, let the thread lock dry with the wheel flat for about 2 hours before using it.

- 70 - 90 kg for a front Crossride® or Cosmos® wheel with a tensionometer Hozan type. - 110 - 130 kg for a front Cosmic® Carbone SSC® wheel with a tensionometer Hozan type. - Ksyrium® SSC® : 90 - 110 kg for the front wheel and 130 - 150 kg for the rear wheel on the free wheel side. Crossmax® UST® : 100 - 120 kg for the front wheel and 130 - 150 kg for the rear wheel on the free wheel side.
