Required qualification: PhD No age limit, all nationalities

JOB DESCRIPTION: RESEARCHER INED's main mission is to study the national and international demographic situation and to analyse population trends. INED adopts a multidisciplinary approach, and its areas of expertise cover not only the study of purely demographic phenomena such as nuptiality, fertility, mortality and migration, but also demography applied to society, economics, public health, human geography, history and more.

In 2014, INED is offering THREE research positions (category 2, CR2) specialized in one of the following disciplines or research themes (no order of priority): Speciality A: Demography and associated disciplines Speciality B: Demographic analysis, populations and development: South America or Maghreb or Caucasus or South and Southeast Asia Speciality C: Demographic analysis of family situations Speciality D: Conjugal relationships, gender and social stratification Speciality E: Economic and health consequences of population ageing Speciality F: Sociodemographic analysis of mobility Speciality G: International migration Speciality H: Categorization of otherness and construction of identity Please indicate AT THE TOP OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT the main speciality corresponding to your application, as well as your second speciality, if applicable. Speciality A : Demography and associated disciplines You may apply if you possess advanced knowledge in the field of demography or have specific know-how in another discipline covered by INED. Speciality B : Demographic analysis, populations and development: South America or Maghreb or Caucasus or South and Southeast Asia Reasons for recruitment The work of the CEPED research unit (UR2) focuses on the links between populations and development and is in the frontline of new knowledge output. The unit also responds to requests for specific scientific studies issued by international bodies in its priority areas of research, i.e. migration, health, education. CEPED'S research thus targets not only the research community and students, but also the social and economic players and public authorities concerned by development questions. In coming years, the unit aims to develop new fields of research, covering new geographical areas (Latin America, Southern Caucasus, and Central Asia, Maghreb, South and Southeast Asia) and new themes (inequalities, crises, migrant circulation and trajectories , social policies, norms). Job description The recruited researcher will be a specialist in one of the listed geographical and cultural zones: Maghreb, South America, southern republics of the former USSR, or South and Southeast Asia. His/her research will concern one or more of the priority sociodemographic research themes defined by CEPED for the coming five years: health, migration, ageing, education and, in association with these themes, questions of gender and inequality. The recruited researcher will work mainly with the various demographic sources and sociological and demographic surveys that already exist for these countries: censuses, DHS, MICS, other national and international surveys, and will expand these primary and secondary data through complementary surveys. He/she will participate in building ties between INED, CEPED and the demographic research centres and social science survey organizations in his/her countries of interest. Necessary qualifications (disciplines): Preferably a demographer, with qualifications in statistics or sociology, with a thesis or research experience in a theme relating to migration, health, education, ageing, gender and/or associated inequalities, in one or more developing or emerging countries. Experience required: The candidate is familiar with the main demographic data sources and their specific features in his/her countries of interest. He/she is well acquainted with the literature on the determinants and the demographic and sociological consequences in his/her fields of research, and of their importance for development policies. The candidate has sound empirical knowledge of the field, and has spent time as a researcher in at least one of the countries in his/her zone of interest. As CEPED is a multi-disciplinary research unit, the candidate should show an interest in multidisciplinary approaches and be open to discussion between different disciplines and geographical regions.

Speciality C : Demographic analysis of family situations Reasons for recruitment The work of the "Fertility, Family, Sexuality" research unit focuses on trends in family situations at national and international levels. The unit is involved in various European projects and data collection operations (Famille et logements 2011, Generations and Gender Survey 2005-2011, Formation des couples 2013, etc.). It is also responsible for producing the annual report on the demographic situation. In coming years, the unit wishes to develop its research on the analysis of conjugal and family situations. The availability of data from the French tax system, alongside vital records, censuses and major surveys provides a new opportunity to describe residents' family situations, including longitudinal follow-up through the merging of information from successive years. These data will call for major investment, in association with the producers of these data and other users (economists, INSEE statisticians). Job description The recruited researcher will work mainly from vital records, censuses, the table of dwelling occupants common to several INSEE surveys and data from tax files. He/she will contribute to the annual report on the demographic situation by analysing short- and medium-term demographic trends. He/she will produce results to update the demographic data series, alongside and in association with the series published by the public statistical office. He/she will develop his or her own research projects and will contribute to developing the unit's link with INSEE and other French or foreign research institutions or laboratories which focus on family questions in the fields of demography, sociology, economics and statistics. Necessary qualifications (disciplines): Preferably a demographer, with qualifications in in sociology or economics, with a thesis or research experience on family behaviours or situations (fertility, couple formation or dissolution, family structures), preferably in France or Europe. Experience required: The candidate is familiar with the main French sources of demographic data. Knowledge of international sources would be a plus. Experience in exploiting and comparing diverse quantitative sources concerning a specific research object would also be appreciated. He/she has a good knowledge of the literature on family transformations in Europe.

Speciality D : Conjugal relationships, gender and social stratification Reasons for recruitment The "Demography, Gender and Society" and "Fertility, Family, Sexuality" research units wish to develop the analysis of social differences in the field of family and conjugal trajectories and behaviours. The growing diversity of family situations and histories is giving rise to new differences between men and women, between generations and between social groups which cannot be satisfactorily measured using standard criteria (occupation, nationality, etc.) since the measures obtained are often limited to individual characteristics at the date of observation. Analysis of social stratification and the gender division of behaviours must take account of status changes over the life course at the individual level, and of conjugal, familial and social dynamics which provide keys to understanding individual trajectories. Analysis of interactions between these dimensions and of gender differences will be central to the work of the recruited researcher. Job description The candidate will develop the analysis of changes in social differences and gender relations, and look for research tools most suited to the constraints and potentialities of survey data. To this end, the recruited researcher may make use of population-based surveys currently involving both research units. The first is the EPIC survey on individual and conjugal trajectories, conducted in 2013, and the second, scheduled for 2015, concerns gender violence. Other relevant surveys include the ELFE French child cohort study, and the Famille et logements survey of 2011. The study may also be extended to include the statistical analysis of administrative data that are now becoming available for research. Necessary qualifications (disciplines): The candidate should be a quantitative demographer or sociologist with mastery of statistical methods and of population survey analysis. Experience required: Experience of work on the theme of differences between social groups is required, preferably in areas relating to the family, the couple, sexuality or fertility. In-depth knowledge of gender studies in these fields is essential.

Speciality E : Economic and health consequences of population ageing Reasons for recruitment The consequences of population ageing represent a major economic and social challenge. The Mortality, Health, Epidemiology and Economic Demography research units wish to further develop their research projects on the consequences of increasing life expectancy. focusing on the following themes: adaptation of social protection systems (pensions, dependence, etc.) to demographic change; analysis of labour force participation, intergenerational transfers and relationships and/or determinants of health status and dependence. This research could be based on a comparative approach between countries or between population groups within a single country. Job description The recruited researcher will contribute to the scientific activities of one of the two units. He/she will contribute to analysing the consequences of population ageing in economic and/or health terms. Candidates are invited to contact the units for further information. Necessary qualifications (disciplines): PhD (epidemiology/public health, economics, demography, political science, geography of health) and solid grounding in statistical and/or econometric analysis. Experience required: The candidate should have a solid grounding in statistical methods required for analysis of national or international population databases. Knowledge of econometrics, public policy assessment methods, or of longitudinal analysis and panel data would be a plus. Research experience in the fields covered by this job description would be very welcome.

Speciality F : Sociodemographic analysis of mobility Reasons for recruitment Over the next four years, the unit aims to launch new research into the modes of living and spatial practices that are emerging in response to family transformations and population ageing. The aim is to gain new insight into residential mobility trends. For this purpose, it has a large corpus of surveys, ranging from the Triple biographie survey to the Biographies et entourage surveys, recently fleshed out by the Famille et logements survey of 2011 which collected abundant data on multi-residence and on the geographical distribution of the family circle over three generations; and by the Sans Domicile homelessness survey of 2012. These data will be used to study the spatial practices of families and to target research on specific populations in terms of family or occupational situation, age, living environment, etc. Focus will be placed on a dynamic perspective and on the study of individual trajectories, notably on the links between daily and residential mobilities and practices of dual residence over the life course, transitory or insecure periods and residential vulnerability. Job description Working with the current team, the recruited researcher will contribute actively to developing new knowledge on housing trajectories in a context of crisis (unemployment, divorce, disease, disability, widowhood), and on multi-locality. The modelling of the residential trajectories of individuals from a single household, and the modelling of different geographical, familial, or occupational pathways is central to the research projects of the future. The successful candidate will also be required to take part in the design, testing and implementation of an upcoming survey initiated by the Unit. Necessary qualifications (disciplines): Qualifications in statistics and social sciences are required. Experience in quantitative analysis, knowledge of the concepts and theories concerning residential mobility, living space and the family, and mastery of standard statistical tools (SAS, Stata, R…) are required. Experience required: Experience of teamwork and of analysis of large quantitative data sources, along with research experience in an area related to the topics covered by the research unit (intergenerational relations, social trajectories) would be a plus.

Speciality G : International migration Reasons for recruitment Quantitative analysis of international migration remains quite limited at INED, despite the growing number of data sources. It is also important to develop research on the economic and socio-demographic consequences of migration flows and on the assessment of migration policies implemented in recent decades. A wide range of fields are concerned. For example: migration flow analysis methods (including return and repeat migration); quantitative analysis of transnational mobility; effects of border opening or closure policies on migrants' decisions; respective weights of economic and legal factors on changes in migrant flows; inequality on the labour and housing markets experienced by immigrants and their descendants. The International Migration and Minorities research unit (UR 8) and the Economic Demography research unit (UR 9) would like to enlarge their team working on these research topics. The recruited researcher would belong to both these units. Job description The aim is to strengthen the analytical capacities of UR8 and UR9. The recruited researcher will use existing sources to study questions linked to international migration in France and to make international comparisons. The topics of interest include: circular mobility, return migration, effects of policy on migration flows, transnationalism, impact of migration on labour and housing markets, etc. Necessary qualifications (disciplines): The position is open to candidates from all disciplines (demography, economics, sociology, geography, etc.) but sound knowledge of quantitative methods is required. Experience in public policy assessment would be a plus. Experience required: The candidate has in-depth knowledge of migration flows, immigrants' links with their country of origin, or immigrant integration in the host country. He/she will have studied one of these themes from at least one of these angles: family, labour market and employment, or place of residence and housing. Alternatively, or additionally, he/she will have studied the effect of public policy on migration flows or on immigrant integration in the host country.

Speciality H: Categorization of otherness and construction of identity Reasons for recruitment The "Identities and Territories" unit wishes to recruit a social science researcher to contribute to its collective work on the construction of observation categories (social, spatial, ethnic), in association with researchers for various disciplines (history, geography, sociology, anthropology), in very varied historical, social and cultural contexts (France, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Central Asia, North Africa, etc.) Analysis of the processes of identity construction to describe populations in more complex and diversified ways is central to contemporary debate. In particular, questions are being raised about the utility of establishing statistical measures of belonging, identification or assignation with a view to defining "target" populations for public policy purposes. This reflection on the construction of categories of otherness forms part of a comparative approach involving other international experiences in this area. It calls for the development of appropriate tools to capture the diversity of individual trajectories, their spatial dynamics, membership of different types of networks and possible affiliations with specific groups. Job description The recruited researcher may form part of the "Identities and Territories" research unit (UR 12), notably contributing to its two key projects, the first concerning the links between "Identity and otherness", and the second focusing on "demographic changes and democratic transitions" observed recently in the countries of North Africa. Depending on his/her training background, a researcher corresponding to this profile may interest another INED research unit. If this is the case, the researcher will preferably belong to two units. Necessary qualifications (disciplines): A multi-disciplinary background, combining good knowledge of statistical methods and a qualification in the humanities or social sciences, notably demography, geography, history, sociology or anthropology. Experience required: The candidate should be a social science researcher who has conducted comparative analyses over the long term or on a contemporary timescale. He/she must have in-depth knowledge of statistical tools and quantitative techniques applied to the social sciences and apply a critical approach to the use of sources and methods. Research experience relating to countries on the outer edges of Europe, such as North Africa, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Russia or Turkey would be welcome.
