THE SECOND HALF OF JANUARY AND THE FIRST HALF of February have been extremely hectic here at Bike India . To kick off things we had the annual Awards ceremony, which was followed by the India Bike Week and the Auto Expo. The India Bike Week was a great success as the bikers' footfall crossed the 10,000 mark over this two-day event. The Auto Expo in Noida was the best motor show in India to date. The organisation was high-class right from the press passes delivered to our office in Pune. The Press Day truly felt like a Press Day since no non-press people were present inside the premises, which made it easy for us to get our work done. The SIAM needs to be congratulated for organising the best Auto Expo to date! This month we have two exclusive rides for you. We ride the big Triumph Rocket III and conduct an exclusive road test of the Suzuki Inazuma, plus a first ride on the new Indian Chief and the Kawasaki Z800. The biggest news at the Auto Expo was the price of the new Harley-Davidson Street at just Rs 4,10,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and this translates into an on-road price of well under Rs 5 lakh. We also have a detailed report of the Auto Expo for you. On the personal front quite a bit has happened for me since I wrote the last editorial. The India Bike Week organisers and the Indian biking community inducted me into the Roll of Honour with an award for my contribution to biking in India and my achievements in motorcycle racing. This is a very special award for me as it has come from fellow Indian bikers. The FMSCI has made me the chairman of the two-wheeler circuit racing commission. My fellow members on the commission are like-minded and our goal is to take the sport to the next level.

THE HONDA eBR zsoR

I am a regular reader of your magazine and I must say you chaps are doing a great job.

buying a new bike. I have learnt a lot about safe riding which has helped me become a better and safer rider. Tanjim Kalam, bye-mail

Dear Tanjim, We are gratified to know that we have been of some help to you. Thank you for being a member of the Bike India family. t/

Currently I own a Bajaj Pulsar IS0 and I am planning to upgrade to the Honda CBR 2soR. Please let me know the pros and cons of this bike. My budget is around Rs 2 lakh. Please also let me know if I have any other options. I also want to know more about the ABS technology in the CBR 2soR. Sriramlal G, bye-mail

THE HYOSUNG GTzsoR

I am a regular reader of your magazine, which I have been reading for a long time. I like the fact that you help readers like us when it comes to buying bikes. I am looking forward to buying the Hyosung GT2s0R, but I have heard that the bike has problems like overheating and poor reliability. Is it true?

Dear Sriramlal, Thank you for your compliments. As for your question, the Honda CBR 250R is a splendid motorcycle. It comes with the latest technology such as four valves, liquid cooling, ABS and pro-link suspension, all of which make it a modern 250-CC machine. As for the cons, there are hardly any that will influence your decision. As for options, you may look at the KTM 390 Duke, which will also be within your budget. t/

Please help me. Adarsh Mishr:1, bye-mail

Dear Adarsh, The Hyosung GT250R is a good bike and we are not aware of the problems mentioned by you. We have tested the bike extensively and know that the engine does not overheat. Maybe it generates more heat than a single-cylinder bike since it's a V-twin motor and it is natural for a V-twin to generate more heat. The reliability of the bike is also not in question. However, poor maintenance can adversely affect the reliability of a motorcycle, so the reports you heard might be those about poorly maintained bikes.

A UNIQUE MOTORCYCLE TRIP

A BETTER AND SAFER RIDER

First of all, I want to thank you for your contribution to the riders who learn a lot from your magazine. This is my first e-mail to you, but I have been reading Bike India since its inception. My friends appreciate me for my extensive BI collection and I would like to mention that your magazine has enriched my biking knowledge tremendously and has also helped me and many of my friends in the decision-making process when it comes

My name is A KM Abidur Rahman. I am from Bangladesh and I an engineer by profession. I am also a big Bike India fan in Bangladesh. Recently I completed a motorcycle trip along with some of my friends from Dhaka to St Martin's Island. It was the first time ever that anyone in Bangladesh attempted this trip on motorcycles and we wanted to share it with you. Here are the highlights of the route. St Martin's Island is a small island about eight square kilometres in area and is located in the north-eastern Bay of Bengal, about nine km south of the tip of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula, and forming the southernmost part of Bangladesh. There is a small adjoining island that is separated at high tide, called the Chhera Island. It is about eight km west of the north-west coast of Myanmar, at the mouth of the River Naf. The first settlement started 250 years ago by some Arabian sailors

A NOTE FOR OUR VALUED READERS Dear Readers, Thank you for the large number of letters! However. we request you to send them in a proper format. ArsVy, please ensure that your letters are part of the e-mail itself, and not an attachment. Only pictures, wherever necessary, may be sent as attachments. Secondly, please mention the subject in the subject line. For example, if your letter is for the 'Letters' column, please mention LffiERS in the subject line. If it is a technical query to be answered by us, please mention TECHNO MAIL and so on. Otherwise your mail could land up in the spam bin. This will ensure that your letters and queries are published regularly. - EDITOR

who named the island 'Zanjira'. During British occupation the island was named St Martin's Island. The local names of the island are 'Narical Gingira', also spelt 'Narikel Jinjira/Jinjera', which means 'coconut island' in Bengali, and 'Daruchini Dip'. It is the only coral island in Bangladesh. Abidur Rahman, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dear Abidur, It is always nice to hear from a neighbour and thank you for sharing the joy of your unique trip with us. Wish you happy and safe riding .

.J,I OF TYRES AND BULBS ~

I am a big fan and regular reader of Bike India. This is my first letter to you. I am a

proud owner of a Yamaha YZF RIS (2010 model). I take good care of my bike, which returns a good fuel efficiency of about SO km/L Since I have clocked 25,000 kilometres I would like to change the stock tyres (80/90-17 front and 100/80-17 rear). Please suggest to me the maximum section and the brand of tyres that I can fit on my bike without making any other alterations. I would also like to go for brighter bulbs. Please suggest the maximum rating and the brand of the halogen bulb that I can use for the factory-fitted four Ah battery of the bike. The factory rating of present bulbs is 3SW/3SW. Vaisakh, Thiruvananthapuram

The stock tyres on your Rrs are perfectly matched with the bikes power output as they provide optimum performance and grip. If you upgrade to wider tyres, quite a few things will be affected by it, mainly acceleration and fuel efficiency. The bike's handling will also suffer a lot and that is the reason we won't recommend wider tyres. As for better headlamp bulbs, you can opt for HID (high-intensity discharge) units that provide better illumination. However, keep in mind that the rating should not exceed the current output.

Even the great Tamburini got caught up in integration mania. Somewhere under ail that plastic is a Ducati

Integrating the turn signais usually results in heavier·looking bodywork

In the 1970S and '80S, ïntegraJ' became the new 'in' word. Components that were previously quite happy floating solo in space were merged in with the surrounding bodywork in the hope that they would disappear in the process. Unfonunately, the result was exactly the reverse. Mirrors and tum signais need to protrude a certain distance to be functional and meet type approval regulations, so integration meant taking the body our to meet them. In most cases, that resulted in a lot of additional plastic. Sure, the various appendages were now melded in with the bodywork, but that body had grown to look big and heavy in the process. DESIGN TRENDS we'd lost sight of the dollars. During that era, integration of forms became something of an epidemic, with plastic eventually covering everything in sight. Mechanical parts were considered dirty and undesirable, and were duly covered like a food processor. That was fine when it resulted in models such as Honda's ST800 Pacific Coast, which was aimed at upmarket commuters who wouldn't want to get oi! spots on their Gucci shoes. No more wobbly side-bags and windscreen - now it was ail integrated into one harmonious form, just like a car. Even the ttunk opened on gas .sttuts. But the same approach was forced, somewhat uncomfortably, on Honda's sporty CBRroooF, eaming it the nickname of 'the yoghurt pot', and defining the sports-tourer category once and for ail. This new demarcation point split the

sports bike market into two, and allowed the pure sports breed to evolve as the race replica. Retuming to its track-inspired roots during the 1990S, integration was gradually rejected in favour of more simple, honest peripheral parts that were far less dominant. An increasing modem trend is for tum signais built into the mirrors, which eliminates one element. These first became popular on the BMW KIooRS, and were large, heavy components mounted without stalks flush against the fairing. Thanks to the introduction of LEDs, conventional mirrors can now house the tum signais too, without undue weight penalty or vibration. Even so, They appear more noticeable than a conventional setup, so it seems there's always a price to pay somewhere down the line. l'm still waiting for rear-view cameras to replace conventional mirrors,

There's something about race bikes trom ail eras that just look 'right'

and project an image somewhere inside the cockpit. But then why not go the whole hog and move everything to a heads-up display in your visor. If only we could boit the tum signais onto the helmet as weil, then it would really clean up the look ofthe bike! If anything, we've seen a reversai of integration mania in recent years, with detail taking over from smoothness as the designers' prime focus. Each area now competes for attention in its own right. Floating panels create sub-Ievels of bodywork that draw your eye to another world lurking inside the outer shell, while holding the extemal elements together in a more ethereal way. Bike design has now become much more complex than sim ply making the various areas look like They belong together. We haven't altogether lost the les sons leamt in our earlier quest for smoothness and harmony, but we now understand the rules, and can apply integration at our discretion. 2 ;9

together using the extensive parts bin from Victory Motorcycles. This is an idea that would appeal easily to the lazy who do not understand the legacy associated with lndian Motorcycles. However, Polaris did understand it. They knew how to treat an icon and l believe that instead oflooking at Victory as the main plan, Polaris had something else in their mind. They must have mustered their best engineers and designers, given them whatever they needed along with a simple brief - a motorcycle that would simply re-defme the terrn l\merican cruiser'. So the techno wizards and the creative minds at Polaris went on to create a rolling piece of art, which, in the coming years, will defmitely be considered one of the most iconic designs of this century. They created a motorcycle that bore the name of the last famous motorcycle from the lndian brand: the Chief. At Sturgis it proved an exceptional hit and now, thanks to Polaris lndia, it is available in the country. So to take a look at this new motorcycle a bit closely and to ride it on lndian roads, l headed to Delhi where l had a meeting with the Chief. The sheer beauty of the lndian Chief left me agape when l first laid my eyes it. l could imagine why the name Chief was selected. This new

Detailing on the Indian Chief is simply impeccable and this head design explains why

INDIAN CHIEF CLASSIC motorcycle perfectly represents the modem interpretation of the iconic Chief of the late 1940s. The valanced fenders transported me to the postWW II America. True, l wasn't even bom then, but somehow l could relate to this design. Looking at the huge fuel tank with the chrome instrument console sitting atop it l could imagine what was going through the designers' heads while they were crafting it.lt has its unique identity and it would be, weil, criminal if you compared it to big Harley-Davidson bikes. The Chiefhas a lot of attirude and a distinctive character that is seen only on masterpieces like the MV Agusta Brutale and F4, Ducari 916 and Harley-Davidson V-Rod. Every bit of the Chief has been designed to evoke nostalgia and l am sure that many bike connoisseurs will agree with me on this count. Elements such as the bike's chunky front forks, perfectly fmished belt drive coyer on the right side, the Indian war bonnet, chromed out headlamp unit, wide handlebar, retro-Iooking speedometer and fuel-gauge, white-wall tyres and wire wheels are ail inspired by the original bike. The engine by itself is an objet d'art - l would love to put in a glass box and make it the centrepiece of my living room décor! It packs a heavy dose of chrome and has very interesting detailing that mimics the original bike's engine. The chiselled cylinder-head covers with beautifully sculpted fins, the breathtaking chrome pushrod covers, the imaginatively designed crankcase and air-box and the perfectly bent exhaust pipes make this engine a very pro minent component of the overall design. l can go on and on about this gorgeous looking motorcycle, but,

perhaps, it would be best if you decided yourselves how good-Iooking this Chief really is. Moving on, the Indian Chief cornes with a proximity key that allows you to get astride, press the big power button on the instrument console and thumb the starter to bring the motor alive: a fearure that is usually reserved for ultra-modem bikes. Another aspect worth noticing is the missing throttle cables. This is because the Chief has a ride-by-wire throttle, which means that throttle is controlled by the computer rather than a cable running down the handlebar. Once l got over the fact that the Indian Chief packs a lot of technology for a cruiser, it was rime l thumbed the starter and began the ride. The first thing that l noticed about the Chief was how wellbalanced it was. lt weighs 350 kg, but once you get it off the side-stand and start riding, ail that bulk disappears. The well-engineered aluminium frame and perfect steering geometry make the Indian Chief a very easy to handle cruiser even though it is eight feet in length. Negoriating the Gurgaon traffic on the Indian was like child's play: the bike is easy to manoeuvre and doesn't feel bulky even at low speed. After making my way through the heavy traffic l finally reached the smooth, almost traffic-free, Gurgaon-Faridabad highway. Here l focused more on the torque-rich 1,8Il-CC V-twin that felt like a dream as l rode down the road. Being a product developed by a company that has engineering as its priority has its own distinct advantages and the Indian is a perfect example of what Polaris Industries are capable of. The beautiful V-twin engine, for example, was developed From scratch. It still uses

pushrods but somehow doesn't feellike a machine operated by pushrod. The refinement levels were sublime and the smooth, subdued exhaust note keeps reminding one that this is a high-class motorcycle that doesn't bark like a wild animal. Polaris engineers have also managed to get rid of the vibrations at lower revs, although these do creep in at high revs. The ride-by-wire throttle has excellent feel and it reacts very weil to even the slightest input. This also ensures smooth power delivery, which impressed me highly as l cracked opened the throttle on an empty straight section of the tarmac. The immaculate power delivery of this bike and irs immense 138.9 Nm oftorque simply propelled the bike to triple-digit speeds even before l could shift up from the second to the third. It was amazing to see how weil the engine reacted to a throttle controlled by a computer. It is not only the engine that is impressive, the six-speed gearbox of this bike also has a lion's share in the whole process. l found the gear shifts to be precise and smooth and my left foot never felt as if it was working hard te shift a cog. Suffice it to say that the refinement and smoothness of the V-twin motor together with the exceptional power and torque delivery changed my perception about American V-twins. Another breathtaking aspect of the Indian Chief was its handling. Usually people are intimidated when they see an eight-foot-Iong motorcycle that weighs 350 kg, but, believe me, once you start riding everything feels much lighter. It doesn't exactly feellike an agile Japanese sports bike, but, considering that it's a cruiser, its agility and ID

Retro styling for the 21st century rider, It doesn't get any better th an this. Sim ply breathtaking!

_.-.,u... INDIAN CHIEF CLASSIC handling have surely set a new benchrnark. As rnentioned earlier, l was riding the bike on the Gurgaon-Faridabad highway, which is a pedect rnix of zigzags, straights, burnpy sections and sorne arnazingly flowing corners. l was surprised to see how well-balanced the bike felt. In burnpy cornets the bike never lost its cornposure even though l was a bit scared about falling rnidcorner because of the burnps. The suspension setup pedectly suits Indian conditions as it absorbs ail the burnps and undulations with ease. l purposely took the bike to a construction site where the approach road was in a mess and found that the suspension handled the torture exceptionally well on the unpaved paths. Once back on the highway l soon came across a chicane that consisted of a tight left-hander followed by a sirnilar right-hander. l lined up the Chief on the straight before the chicane and prayed that it would be able to handle it. l cracked open the throttle quickly, working rny way through the nrst and second gears before turning in for the left-hander. The turn-in was quick as the bike stuck to the line l had irnagined and just when l was at the apex, l took a peek at the speedorneter that read a surprising lZ0 kmlh. As l exited the corner, l gently opened the throtrle and the bike sttaightened itself so l could sirnply repeat the sarne for the right-hander. It was astonishing! At the end of the ride l just sat near the Chief, gazing fondly at it. l realised that nothing can hold a candIe to this rnotorcycle when it cornes to design. It has got loads of character and that typical

Fit, finish and quality are of highest standards. Equipment-wise, nothing cornes close to the Indian

American appeal. Everything on the Chief is so weil executed that there is nothing that l found to be out of place, except for the standard rear seat. The nt-and-nnish is top-notch and the quality of material the best in the segment. The chrome looks immaculate and the understated red paint job gives it a rich feel. The ultta-renned V-twin is the highlight of the whole package and, quite frankly, the ride quality and handling are areas where the

Indian is miles ahead of its cornpetitors. For an average rich Indian, the price is a little too sreep, but rhen again this is not an average rnotorcycle. For Rs z6.slakh (ex-showroorn, Delhi) you get a piece of rolling art. It is like an investrnent, which, over the next few decades, will fetch a really high price because of its ernotional appeal. Very few bikes in the world can do that and the Indian Chief is one of thern. ~§

TRIUMPH ROCKET III ROADSTER

THE BIG ULLY

to be nerceived notjust by other bikes, but quite a few ade a va/iant attempt to tame this hu/king beast on the busy roads of Gurgaon recent/y STORY: RAVI CHANDNANI PHOTOGRAPHY: SANJAY RAIKAR

TR1UMPH ROCKET 111 ROADSTER HE BRITISH ARE KNOWN FOR making sorne of the best motorcydes in the world. The traits typical of British motorcyde indude excellent handling, superb agiliry and light weight. So what were Triumph thinking when they decided to build the Rocket III? Ir is a motorcyde which, at least by the look of it, seems like a complete opposite of what the company usually does. I first encountered this mammoth beast in Pune and, frankly, I was intimidated by its sheer presence. That was about five years ago and today I am once again face to face with this monster of a motorcyde, one major difference being that this time I am going to try to tame it. At first sight many people are likely to be intimidated by the sheer size of the Rocket III, just as I was five years ago, but there is more to it than your eyes can see. The design, for example, has a very British feel to it. You can see the crudeness, yet, at the same time, you also notice the strong muscular character that cornes from the massive inline three z.3-litre motor, which is the centrepiece of the whole design; so much so that the rest of the bike seems to be put together around it. Elements such as the bulbous fueltank, bug-eyed twin headlamps, wide handlebars, comfortable saddle, massive airbox, twin-pod instrument console and the three chrome exhaust pipes jutting out of the three cylinders give the Rocket III a very distinctive

T

identiry. Personally, I think the Rocket III looks like what Wayne Rooney would look like after being exposed to gamma rays. Anyway, the whole point of the Rocket III, according to me, is to intimidate people and it scores ail the points for doing that. The Rocket III is probably the largest capaciry production motorcyde in the world made by a mainstream company. So everything about it is big and this big feel stayed with me right from the moment I saw the bike until the next few days. Riding this mammoth motorcyde is no easy task because you are constantly reminded of its 367 kilos of wet weight, which, honestly, is just too much for something with only two wheels. However, it is one of those bikes that grows on you with time. The riding position of the Rocket III is quite interesting. Ir looks very similar to that of a cruiser, but it is doser to the riding position of a street bike although the handlebars are quite wide. After making myself comfortable on this massive bike l started the mother of ail engines: the 2,294-CC inline three motor. This is an engine that deserves to be fitted into a car. The longitudinallayout of this engine gives it a lot of character and, when l twisted the throttle at standstill, the bike pulled towards the left because of the rotation of the crankshaft. Ir may produce just 148 PS of power, but the 221 N m of torque from this inline three would put many ID

_

_ .·....u,TRIUMPH ROCKET III ROADSTER four-cylinder motors to shame. The Rocket III is a massive motorcycle and that is perfectly represented in its exhaust note. It starts off with a bang which then turns into a constant loud burble that is quite unique. It doesn't have that thump ... thump ... sound. It has a very distinctive note that l had never heard before. The exhaust sounded like a top fue! drag bike idling half a kilometre away. l revved it a bit and noticed that the sound only gets louder and louder. It was fmally the time when l, for the first time in my life, dared to tame this beast. l shifted to the first and heard a clunk indicating that this shaft-driven motorcycle is ready to go. As the bike started moving forward, l noticed that it isn't that difficult to ride after ail. In a straight line the bike felt very easy to ride, though l could still fee! its bulk. The upright position and excellent ergonomics did calm my senses a bit, but l had to be very careful while manoeuvring the bike through Gurgaon traffic. Being a huge motorcycle it does feel a bit out of place in traffic, but you get used to it after sorne time. After scaring a few motorists in the city l headed off towards the highway to see what the Rocket III was capable of on wide open roads. l was instantly impressed by the way it accelerated. The massive amount oftorque is available at 2,750 revolutions per minute, which is where you would want to keep the revs if you wanted to enjoy the smooth acceleration. It pulls like a train in a straight line and you have to hold on to the handlebars for dear life. The Rocket III acce!erates so quickly that when l looked at the speedometer l realised l was doing IIO-120 miles per hour, which is roughly 180-190 km/ho Ali of this happened within a few seconds. l was convinced that there is no shortage of power on the Rocket III. It truly goes like a rocket and has the stability to match the outstanding acceleration. However, there is one place where the Rocket III makes you break out in sweat. The Rocket III is somewhat like the American muscle cars that were known for their straight-line stability and bad handling in the corners. It behaves exceptionally weil in a straight line, but when l attempted to show it a corner, l was literally taken for a ride. There is simply too mu ch bulk on the bike and it affects the handling in a very big way. l approached a corner with a certain line in mind. However, on turn-in the weight of the Rocket III was simply too much for me to handle and l had to take a much wider line through the corner. The high centre of gravity and the weight of the bike hamper its handling to a certain extent in the corners, though it handles slightly better in long, smooth-flowing corners. This muscle bike has great stability and straight-line speed with a less than impressive handling in the corners. Its ride quality is preny good, if not the best. The suspension setup is still

Those big digits are MPH but the rate of acceleration makes them look like KM/H

a bit on the firm side, but then small undulations and bumps are not a big deal for the Rocket III. In the braking department two huge 32o-mm brake rotors with four-piston Nissin callipers provide excellent braking. Overall, the Rocket III is an example of what a sane company can do when it decides to make the world's highest capacity production motorcycle. Everything about the Rocket III revolves round the 2.3-litre motor. The design puts the engine at the centre-stage: the good build quality and fitand-finish get overshadowed by the massiveness ofthe inline three motor. Rs 20 lakh (exshowroom) is quite a lot of money to pay for a motorcycle whose USP is its massive amount of torque. However, it is certainly a motorcycle that puts a smile on your face once you have ridden it. It gives a sense of being the most powerful thing on the road. It may not seem like a practical option, but then which big bike is a practical motorcycle for Indian conditions? Thus, if you really want to stand out in the crowd and want to get noticed for being different, then the Rocket III is most certainly the motorcycle that can elevate you to that stature. ":?J;
