Subject Exhibition and Conference “3D, Science and Cultural Heritage”, Metz, 19 – 23 November 2008

Dear Sir, With this letter I want to express my sincere appreciation to you and your co-organizers for the conference and exhibition “3D, Science and Cultural Heritage” which was held at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers (ENSAM) at Metz on 19 – 23 November 2008. The event offered a unique forum for scientists, engineers, historians, archaeologists and artists from many different countries worldwide and with a broad variety of disciplines, but all professionally involved and passionate about the study, preservation and representation of cultural heritage, to meet, to discuss and to interact. It not only was very interesting to get highlevel information on the state-of-the-art in many complementary research domains (both scientific and artistic), but also ― and, more importantly ― it was very stimulating to exchange information and ideas and to explore possible new synergies. I am sure that the meeting in Metz initiated quite some new contacts and future collaborations. It is not at all easy to organize events of this kind, but turning them into a success ― as this meeting was ― really is a great achievement. Many different factors contributed to that success. First of all, there was the smooth organization, both before and during the event. The personal contact, flexibility and follow-up in the preparation and sending of the material for the exhibition as well as the timely and accurate practical information about the lecture and the conference infrastructure were in

remarkable contrast with most other events I participate in. During the meeting, there was always a contact person of the organization available to help with all possible questions and requests. The kindly manner in which a balance was reached between a careful realization of the program and time for questions and exchange, on the other hand, contributed to an open and inviting atmosphere. But, in my personal opinion, a key factor in the success of the meeting was the continuous invitation by the organizers to make the lectures understandable for a broad audience ― since the event was open to the public ― and at the same time seriously insisting on a qualitatively high level of content in the contributions. In this way ideas, concepts and methodologies could be communicated and discussed by all interested participants without being obscured by technicalities which otherwise would have distracted the attention of the non-specialist. Also interesting was the fact that people who were not able to attend the conference but whose expertise is relevant to the subject and the scope of the event could participate through videoconferencing. And, last but not least, I very much appreciated the arrangements made for our sojourn in Metz. All participants stayed at the same hotel in the city center and the organizers always made sure that everybody got transportation to and from the conference site. Moreover, every day we were kindly invited to have dinner together, but no obligation was felt at any moment. In this way there was plenty of time and opportunity to meet people and to make new contacts in an informal manner. And, the friendly and helpful staff of the hotel made that we soon felt at ease. It does not happen very often that at a conference, apart from new contacts, you also make new friends! Therefore, mr. Lavingne, I want to thank you and your co-organizers explicitly and sincerely for the kind invitation to participate in this unique event and also for the warm hospitality I enjoyed in Metz.

Sincerely yours,

Prof. dr. Theo MOONS Professor of Mathematics

Benoit Coignard
