QUATRE FANTAISIES / FOUR FANTASIES Réveil / Waking-up Gymnastique / Gymnastics Météo / Wheather report Soirée / Evening

SOLO GUITAR

These four Fantasies require a simple technique, they are clearly set out and the symbols of the different effects are well described. The music is exciting in its simplicity. /.../ For players around grade 4 - 5 standard who want a humorous look into the world of contemporary guitar music, this work is quite rewarding. (Oyvin Lyslo, Classical Guitar Dec. 1990)

Gérard REBOURS Quatre Fantaisies (1989, rév. 2015))

Foreword These four pieces share with the Renaissance Fantasies a free form in which short basic patterns are presented which are then transformed in various ways to re-appear more or less obviously all along their development - thus being the cement of the piece and giving it a structural consistency. In Waking up, for example, it is easy to locate the first pattern based on the three notes E - F# - C, that will be transposed (A - B - F), and generate other phrases. The famous jazz chord sequence "Rhythm change" (C - Am - Dm - G) will be used as a recurring pattern in Weather Report, as well as some special sound effects and clusters. Finally, the bulk of these elements will be happily united in the last Fantasy, Evening ,where the basic opening phrase of Waking up, after having been used for a lively motif in its normal shape and its inversion (as the descending suite E - D - G#), will close the whole set. These four pieces aim at offering the guitar students a set of modern sketches with tonal and atonal passages, clusters, percussions and also some non-conventional techniques requiring somewhat beneficial "gymnastics", especially when one hand or the other must leave the standard position and then quickly return to it. Technical and musical explanations appear at the beginning of each piece. The short accompanying stories help focus expression and give an interpretative guideline. The words do not follow the music as song lyrics, and are not intended to be spoken when performing - but if the guitarist or a narrator feels like doing it, a try can be worthwhile. Publisher Robert Martin offered these Four Fantasies in his catalogue until 2015, and they are now newly engraved and on free download. This set was lucky enough to be used as national exam pieces in France, to appear on selected modern pedagogic music lists, and is present amongst the reference pieces used by Mr Gilles Defoin in his dissertation La musique contemporaine et son implication dans l'enseignement musical.
