BELLE & SEBASTIAN [Mick] 1. Very happy, yes. It was great fun last year. 2. The set will be different from last year, there will be more from the Storytelling album. If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise. 3. Definitely. 4. Didn't do it last year, so probably no. Getting too old for that sort of malarkey. 5. Glastonbury in England, Quarts in Norway, Haldern in Germany, Sudoest in Portugal, and we already played Coachella in California, which was great fun- palm trees, desert, rocky mountains... 6. Yes, particularly looking forward to seeing Air and DJ Shadow. 7. We kind of prefer bigger gigs now. And it's better when people stand rather than sit. We are enjoying outside gigs a lot now that we've done a few. 8. Drink yes, drugs no. 9. Not for me. Yes, anywhere is a good place to make friends. 10. Best- Benicassim last year! Worst- camping in the rain at Reading when I was 17. 11. Ain't no Sunshine by Bill Withers. Thank You by Led Zeppelin. > www.belleandsebastian.co.uk CASSINO 1. Yes. It’s the first time, we’re very excited. 2. High Energy !! Our show is a new concept of Spanish Pop-Dance sound. We offer a funny time to dance and shake your bodies. 3. Yes, we stay 4 o 5 days in Benicassim, like other years. 4. Yeeeeeeesss !! 5. Perhaps, the FIB is our first one. 6. Yes, but no more than other years. 7. We like to play in big festivals or in smaller places with good audience and best sound. 8. Drinks sometimes, hard drugs never. 9. It’s a good place to live different sensations and feel the music without limits. 10. Best: the shows of our favourite artists: Saint Etienne, Hooverphonic, Bjork, Goldie, Velocette, Massive Attack, Orbital, Unbelievable Truth, Chemical Brothers. Worst: The excessive heat sometimes. 11. E-mail, Pet Shop Boys. Here to stay, New Order. > www.jabalinamusica.com > www.cassinomusic.com DELUXE 1. It’s the first time I’m gonna play there and obviously I’m very happy, it’s the most important festival in Spain & one of the best in Europe. 2. Gigs are really different to albums. Live is more powerful and rock. I like to make something very different to what you can listen at home. Surprises? We use to play some covers from the bands I love, "surrender" Cheap treak, "Starman" Bowie or "there is a light that never goes out" from the Smiths are some of them. 3. No, just Saturday and Sunday because I play in Andalucía on Thursday. Anyway I think these will be the most interesting days. 4. I don’t think so, but everything’s possible... 5. Festimad, Esparragorock, Contempopranea, Binefar, Sonica, Cultura quente … I would like to introduce my music in the rest of Europe and, of course, play there to but that is difficult being in a independent label. Anyway I prefer my position, I hate big discography’s mentality. 6. Yes, I think maybe is one of the best Benicassim : Air, Radiohead and Paul Weller. We are in touch with Paul Weller’s guitarist, Steve Cradock, to produce my second album. That would be really nice... 7. I think big festivals are great just because you can show your music to many people maybe don’t know you. But when you listen so many bands in three days I think you can enjoy them as much as if you go to listen to one or two bands. Festivals have their magic but I really prefer small places to play. 8. ??? 9. Maybe, I really don´t know. 10. All my festival experiences are good. 11. Only love can break your heart, Neil Young. Afterglow, Small Faces. Lessons I learned from rocky 1 to rocky 2, Cornershop. > www.mushroompillow.com > wakeup.to/deluxe BEACHWOOD SPARKS 1. yes we are happy we dig Spain lots 2. lots of sweet harmonies and probably a lot more psychedelic energy as we have our original drummer back in the group after three years and he's RAD 3. perhaps, but we are going to be in the middle of a European tour so we may have to bail. 4. there is a real good chance 5. bumbershoot in Seattle w/sonic youth 6. yes Neil Halstead is a fave as well as the Primals oh and of course the cure 7. no preference really just as long as the vibe and the sound are good. 8. we almost died when we played Reading. 9. yeah, i guess so we made lots of friends at the festivals we've played so far...and a few enemies. 10. best memories : Mogwai and the Primals straight into oasis and the party at the hotel. worst memories : was missing our show at leeds after the aforementioned night ... oh and having to play the same day as limp bizkit... 11. maybe a song of the new flaming lips lp ...'fountain of sorrow' by Jackson Browne and every song on original pirate material by The Streets. > www.houstonpartyrecords.com

NO NEO [Nuria & Hector] 1. H: Yeah! It's even the first time I go to a big festival like that. We'll be there because of a Spanish bands contest and we're so happy to be selected to play. N: I was there in the audience in 1998 and it's like a dream to come back on stage! 2. H: A girl & a boy playing pop with technology, done it in our own personal way, trying to recall and transmit emotions. The whole show will be a surprise, even for us at this moment. We've only done a few small gigs and have some work to finish and present for the show.3. Of course! 4. There's only a 1% of probability. 5. Yes, one of them is a local one in Moià, called Bus Stop, with also cinema and other things. 6. How couldn't? Radiohead, the Cure. also Spanish bands like Los Planetas or Fine. the list is incredible. 7. Well we've never been playing in such a big event! We hope to enjoy it. 8. N: Not at all, I prefer to be concentrated in what happens on every stage. H: I'm at legal drugs such as whisky or psychopharmacs. 9. H: I hope so! haha N: Find a lover?, Make new friends for sure, you can always start contact with the camp neighbours. 10. N: My best memories belongs to Benicassim 1998, when i could see PJ Harvey and Björk. It is impossible for me to describe what i felt then. H: I've recently gone to Primavera Sound Festival. After having fun with a new favourite band as Le Tigre you have such a classic like Echo & the Bunnymen on another stage. The mixture of music and people is what makes it great. 11. H: An old song Ana Bashak el Bahr by an Egyptian singer called Nagat. We are preparing a version because it's so beautiful. The new Sheryl Crow album, plain american rock&roll with a very rich production. N: I am quite obsessed with a bossanova song called "chovendo na roseira" (Jobim, of course) by Elis Regina, but the last cd i bought was "Scary World Theory" from Lali Puna with the magnificent song "bi-pet" in it. > www.noneo.net

DOMESTIC 1. I’m very happy to be here again at the Fib. Even more because this time I’ll play with my band ,Domestic. 2. Domestic is a band composed by 6 members. Our idea is a concert based on electronic modern sounds mixed with several branches of jazz. The concept is a show in which musicians play a role more important than the electronic samples. We hope to surprise everyone with our quality... 3. I hope to stay for as many days as I can. 4. We often do not go to after hour’s parties. As for now, we don’t really know, we’ll see... 5. Yes, Domestic will be playing at several festivals like Sonar or Granada´s Jazz Festival. 6. I really like this year’s line up, I believe that they have chosen some amazing artists. I’m especially interested in Rinocerose´s performances. 7. It depends because, in my opinion, it’s a pleasure playing in big festivals like FIB; although smaller places are also nice. 8. “Of course”... 9. I believe that festivals are good places to make friends, even to find a lover, but they are places enjoy the music mainly. 10. My best festival memory was two years ago in the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, where D.J. Awards were taking place, and I got a price. And my worst memory was in another Spanish festival called Etnosur- we had difficulties with technical sound system. 11. In my opinion Rose Rouge by St Germain, it will become a classic hit or Out in the space by The flangers among a great list. > www.cosmosrecords.com

THE ELECTRIC SOFT PARADE [Tom] 1. Yes, looking forward to it ! 2. Rock’n’roll !! 3. No, sorry. 4. Oh, yes !! 5. Yes, Reading, Glastonburry and all the European ones. 6. Yes, it’s the best in Europe. 7. The smaller the better. 8. Oh, yes. 9. I have a girlfriend !! 10. Best : Reading Worst : Somewhere in Europe (we were terrible). 11. Anything off the new Guided By Voices album. > www.electricsoftparade.com ME EVENENO DE AZULES [Jesus] 1. Yes it's the first time. It's a festival we have been interested into since the very first edition, it's the best in Europe for us!!!! We are very proud of playing there this year. We hope the festival will go on for a long time so that we will be able to play again, if possible in the main stage, from one am on!!!! 2. It is likely to start early. We guarantee all the audience that we wil fight the heat with a multicolored POP rain 3. Pop supuesto (sure!) 4. We are more likely to be found dancing to a live pop show. In any case this kind of events is ideal to try new things, so yeah, maybe we'll end up dancing anywhere, anytime. 5. We are also playing in Contempopranea Festival (Alburquerque, Badajoz). Sure we'd love to play in many more! 6. Yes. It's very complete, as usual. We're mostly interested in: Paul Weller, Super furry animals, The Cure, Belle Sebastian, Nosoträsh... 7. We enjoy both, but we maybe prefer smaller places. Because the people that goes to see gigs in small clubs know what they want to see. Unless you are a very big band, it's always more comfortable to play in a small club. Anyway, playing in a big stage in the open air is also very exciting for any musician!!! 8. We only answer that question in the presence of our lawyer. And he's not here at the moment. 9. What you can find is a lot of people with the same musical tastes. And that can be a starting point for many other things. For us music comes first, but of course anyone can enjoy the festival in their very own way. 10. The best: first FIB. It was my first three-day festival, I remember it as something very endearing. The worst: first FIB. I installed my tent just close to a stall of "churros" (Spanish fritter) and couldn't sleep during the three days, due to the noise of the engine. 11. It depends on my current mood. right now it could be any songs from Nosoträsh new album. Juxtaposed with U by Super furry animals or Anti-western by Dominique A. > www.elefant.com MAGA 1. Yes. We love this festival ! It’s the first time we play there with Maga. But two of us played there in 1998 with a former band called Supertube. I also played with Austrialan Blonde in 1999. 2. Sincerity. 3. Yes. 4. Sure !!! 5. Unfortunately, we are not doing lots of festivals this summer. But we’ll be touring around all Fnac stores in Spain during June & July. 6. Yes, we love it ! We can’t wait to see Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Belle & Sebastian, Planetas, Low, Air, … 7. I personally prefer smaller places, where you can control things easily. Anyway, playing at big places is also exciting. 8. Mmmmm 9. Not in my case. I never succeed in finding lover at big events. 10. Best : Björk’s show at Fib98. Worst : Camping place. 11. It was a very good year, Sinatra. Mrs William, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. Café-Tabac, Mendelson. > www.limbostarr.com AROAH [Irene] 1. Yes, it's my first time there and I'm both dreading and looking forward to it. People rarely have the chance of seeing so many different bands in one weekend. And a lot of the bands seldom have the opportunity of playing for such a large audience. So it's very exciting! 2. It will be a full band setup, with guitars, keyboards, a bass and drums; we'll mostly play songs off the new LP. Most of the new songs are louder and/or more complex than the ones on the previous Aroah EP's. It will be the first gig with this lineup but I'm sure it will be great, all the people playing are very talented and have played on the recording sessions. 3. Definitely! 4. I don't think so. I'm not really into techno, though I like some stuff. Well... I might check the dance areas out on Saturday, when all the tension from playing is gone. 5. Not during the summer. Probably Tanned Tin festival in the fall. 6. This year's lineup is good, there are a lot of bands I've been lookingforward to seeing live (Low, Beef, The Cure) and a few bands that I'm curious about because I've heard good things about them but haven't had the chance of listening to their music. 7. Playing is fun and scary, wherever you do it. But I've played a lot of clubs this year, so I'm a little less nervous about that type of show. But playing for a lot of people (at least I'm hoping lots of people will come and see the show) is really cool.. 8. If I'm attending I won't drink much more than I would any other weekend. But when I'm playing and getting free drinks backstage... I have to be careful. I like drinking, but not getting drunk. Drugs are totally out of the question, because I can't afford to loose that much control. 9. It might be an interesting place to meet someone, but real friendship and love (even the un-real kind) are things that develop with some time. Three days can be fun, but usually they aren't enough. 10. At last year's Benicassim Festival I was completely blown away by Big Star, it was an amazing experience to be there in the front row! But I missed The Flaming Lips because I was in the press room working on an article I wrote for the Fiber, that was sad. 11. Mary Timony "Tiger in the forest", Love "The Red Telephone", Black Box Recorder "Weekend", Ninety-Nine "Vox", Bowie "Life on Mars"... so many!!! > www.acuareladiscos.com/aroah ANAJO [Michi] 1. oh yes. that’s a great thing. tell a young German band to play a show in Spain, on an big festival near the beach, only people who wanna have fun.....you only get one answer: your are kidding!!!! we never played there so we are very excited. 2. actually you (non-German crowd) wont understand a word but...we are a happy band. our sound lets keep the audience a smile on his face. so like we do...always smiling on the stage. 3. yes....and that’s ok. 4. absolutely. 5. yes...but only in Germany. 6. that’s great. beside of watching acts like radiohead, air, muse and other acts, each member of our band is doing in electronic music like the stuff of the german labels "kompakt" (cologne) and "sender" (berlin). 7. we never played on such a big festival like Benicassim. so let us answer the question after the show. 8. who ever was on a festival wont answer this question without an lawyer (german: anwalt, advocat) 9. never say never. 10. one time our mixer switched, without knowing it, the singers mics in a false effect program. our voices sounded like mickey mouse and kermit for two songs. that was great.....very funny. 11. there are so many great songs all over all genres. the favorites come and go. > www.anajo.de NOSOTRÄSH [Beatriz] 1. Yes, we are happy, and it is the fourth time, so we are kind of family there. 2. Very quiet and emotional show, surprises, and no hits at all 3. Of course! 4. No way, I save my time for the swimming pool or the beach in the morning. 5. Yes, Contempopranea, maybe Lemon pop. 6. Yes, although I miss some names. 7. It depends. I enjoy both, they are different. 8. Not always, it depends on the situation and friends I meet 9. Not a lover but definitely you can make friends. 10. Getting there at 9 in the morning for the sound check after waking up at 6:00 and none there. 11. "My dear someone" by Gillian Welch. > www.elefant.com > web.jet.es/antoniobermejo FINE ! 1. Yesss, it's our first time, and we're euphoric. Playing there is one of the most important events for a pop band in Spain. Besides, we're big fans of the festival and we've been in the audience for many years, but this time we'll be on stage as well. 2. We'll play new songs (surprise!) which will probably be in our second record, and will also revisit songs from the past that we still like a lot, with new arrangements, etc... Any way, what's sure is that we'll enjoy it a lot and hope the audience does too. Have I convinced you to come to see us ? 3. Yesss. The bands are HUGE: Paul Weller, Saint Etienne, Primal Scream, Belle & Sebastian, Suede, Supergrass, Gus Gus... It's going to be difficult to be everywhere, but we'll try. 4. MMMM, it depends on the dj. If the music is not very hard, we'll make an effort to stay up "all day and all of the night". 5. We're playing in a tribute to Gaudí in Leon. It's a city with some buildings made by this architect. They wanted Catalan bands and chose Fine! and Astrud (we love their music!). Perhaps we'll be somewhere else, but still don't know for sure. We'll let you know. 6. Yes. Every year the best bands are in FIB, but 2002's line-up is amazing. Not only the international, but the national as well. I'd love to meet Brett Anderson, and I'm sure the guys would really like to meet the girls who do the background vocals in Saint Etienne... 7. I guess every thing has its charm. Playing in festivals gives you the chance to be seen by many people, the atmosphere is party all the time, and dancing and going crazy, it's real fun. But small places are better for us in terms of the sound, we're not very loud and we like every detail to be heard. But Fib has a bit of both; we'll be playing in not a very big stage, but hopefully many people we'll be there. Will you? 8. Believe me if I say we don't. Well, alcohol is a drug. So, yes, we do. But we don't take other substances. It's just a fact. We respect people who do, it's a choice. I must say that our attitude is not very usual in the music scene. 9. Of course, I mean, everyone leaves shyness at home, so you can make friends easily. I hope to see you around, lollipop people. And well, hopefully we'll find lovers too... 10. Maybe the first year we went to FIB, to the organization’s camping, was a bit of a disaster. It's so crowded, the ground is full of stones, there are just a few trees so at 8 am you can't sleep. The best memories are the great shows we've seen there, the beach times, and people living together for three days, having fun and enjoying the music. 11. In my case, I like Perry Blake's last single (I don't remember the name of the song) and a disco song called "murder on the dance floor", and other pop classics, always favourite. > www.espacio3.com/strangeones

* interviews ~ DJs 1. Is it the first time you DJ at the FIB ? 2. What bands/DJs do you want to see this year ? 3. Where do you usually DJ ? 4. Do you plan to wear a special outfit for your set ? 5. Do you usually take alcohol or drugs before DJing ? 6. What are the songs people will hear for sure during your set ? 7. What are the songs people won't hear during your set ? 8. Will you let fans go into the DJ area to talk to you (and more) ? 9. Tell us about the craziest story that happened to you while DJing ? 10. What are your favourite songs at the moment ? DJ CHRISTOPHE BASTERRA [Paris] 1. Yes, but it’s not the first time I’m going to the festival. I’m quite “proud” of being one the few French who were at the first edition in 1995. I don’t know how is the new location because the last time I went to the Fib was in 1997, the “mythic” year of the tempest. 2. Pfff. A lot of bands. The Cure (I hope they’ll not only play their pop hits). Departure Lounge, I like them a lot. Paul Weller, who’s gonna play to a fan crowd. Aroah, a Spanish girl signed on Acuarela. Suede (8 songs of their set will be chosen by the public. If they play “Europe is our playground”, it’ll be perfect). Doves, of course. Thalia Zedek, who’s gonna play with Nacho Vegas. Nosoträsh, whose last album is very good. Well, a lot of people. In the DJs line-up, I like DJ Shadow, but I prefer “selectors”. 3. In Paris most of the time : Pop-In, Syndicat. And Truskel, a bar that has just opened. 4. A costume AND a tie. But I’ll keep my bermuda on, so I can feel better during the day. 5. I never take drugs. On the other hand, I and Robert are going to DJ around 16h30, which means that we’ll just have finished to eat (and I’m found of red wine). Anyway, I’m drunk 99% of the time when I DJ … which the people I DJ with not always like. 6. “Bizarre Love Triangle”, Devine & Statton. “A l’ombre de nous”, Codeine. A song from Rosemary’s Baby soundtrack. “The look of love”, Dusty Springfield. “Do you really want to hurt me” covered by Mark Eitzel. All of this for a “cool” beginning. After : some underground songs from the Madrilan Movida. “Cherchez le garçon”, Taxi Girl. A track from the new Alpine Stars LP. A Certain Ratio, Doves. “Here to stay”, New Order. 7. Everything’s possible this year … except heavy & nu metal, salsa, « Vivre dans la lumière » by Youri Djorkaeff. Of I forgot : I WILL NOT PLAY MISS KITTIN. 8. I could only answer this If I had fans … 9. Not remembering what I was playing after drinking too much vodka. But no “sex” story, if this is what you were expecting. 10. “Pouding”, Doves. “Move on up”, Mark Eitzel. “It”s obvious”, The Au-Pairs. > www.lesite.fr/magic

DJ TOXICOSMOS [Valencia] 1. Yes, it’s the first time … but not the last I hope ! The Fib is one of my favourite festivals, I come here every year. DJ in a big stage will be a great experience for sure. We’ll see! 2. The band I’m waiting to see is undoubtedly Belle & Sebastian. I want to see Suede, Saint Etienne, The Cure, Sigur Ros & Telepopmusik as well. Among the Spanish bands, I’m particularly interested in Nosoträsh, Fine!, Cassino & Polar. I want to see DJ Polar & DJ Rojiblanco as well. 3. In the parties that we organize with our radio program Toxicosmos and at friends’ parties as well! 4. Estrenare el nuevo trajecapsula intergalatico del chicoRobot 5. Yes, of course. A lot of drugs: sugus, petazetas and lollipops! 6. I’ll play popazul songs, Japanese pop songs, and songs that make me smile 7. I’ll not play postrock and songs with heavy guitars. 8. Yeeeeessssssss, fans?! wow!!!!! 9. I once Djed in a wedding. The people probably thought they were somewhere else and kept asking songs like Chayanne or crap summer hits. 10. Entre rios "Alcance". Milkyway "My groovy love". Le Hammond Inferno "People Pop". > www.toxicosmos.com DJ POLAR [Madrid] 1. No it's the third time 2. Air, Beef, Belle And Sebastian, Haven, I Am Kloot, Me Enveneno De Azules, Miss Kittin And The Hacker (Live), Neil Halstead, Nice Man, Nosoträsh, Polar, Saint Etienne, Sigur Rós, Super Furry Animals, The Cure, The Reindeer Section, «Rinôçérôse» 3. I'm dj resident in mond club in barcelona, and in ocho y medio in madrid. I've also djed in other festivals such as sonar, isla de encanta, contempopranea, lemonpop...), in elefant nights, in nights hosted by fanzines, many different places, and playing very different sessions. 4. no, nothing special. 5. I do it during the whole festival 6. "bizarre love triangle" by new order and "cerca de shibuya" by la casa azul are two songs I'm sure I will play. 7. any of them, I can' t tell. It will be late night, a big place where people want to have fun, so I'll play funny things, techno pop and things to dance to. 8. I always let them, but I don't feel comfortable. You need some concentration to dj, and sometimes people come in and talk and talk and talk... they sometimes don't notice you cannot serve them... but it's ok, you can always tell them in a polite way and they understand. 9. many of them... a short time ago, a wedding party came into mond club, and there was a very insistent girl requesting me really dreadful stuff... as I didn't pay attention to them she finally threw one of her shoes at me! 10. I prefer records rather than songs: SAINT ETIENNE "Action" Single, BELLE & SEBASTIAN "Storytelling", ENTRE RIOS "Idioma suave", GALACTICA "Electrónica" Single, LUNA "Romantica", TENDER TRAP "Film molecules", MÚM "Finally we are no one", NEIL HALSTEAD "Seasons" Single, MILKYWAY "In love ep" Single, NOSOTRÄSH "Popemas". > www.elefant.com

SOUVENIR a delicious Spanish band singing in french, un rayo del sol on the (sometimes a bit boring) Fiberfib stage. PJ HARVEY more sexy than ever, Polly was the highlight of the big stage, hot hot.

> fiberfashion : are you electroclash ? A new year gives a new trend so after brit pop, trip hop, electro pop, Romo back, Chardaca Power and tuti cuanti … Lollipop trendsetters are proud to present Electroclash What is about ? Nothing else than Attitude with a touch of music. This gives artists who have a strong interest in the retro sounds of 80s New Wave, Synth and Electro Pop, and combine the two to make a purely new form of music which can be defined as punk inspired dance music with an interest in fashion and art. Yes it is not very original but it depend on how you are manage it … so don’t waste time and follow our tips ! To be Electroclash . Buy, borrow or steal some old albums from Kraftwerk, Visage, New Order, Human League and Gary Numan. Some knowledge of the early 80s Italodisco and Giorgio Moroder doesn't hurt either. . Buy, borrow or steal a cheap sampler/inexpensive keyboard and nick everything you can from the artists mentioned above. Add some one-octave basslines and disco beats. . Buy, borrow or steal a vocoder to get some fashionable robot vocals in. For additional cult bonus points : buy, borrow or steal an old Commodore 64 computer to make some bleeps with. . Watch the 1982 cult film Liquid Sky. Then buy a skinny tie, a can of hairspray and some hair dye, plus some fluorescent make-up to go. . Now the hardest part: you have to try to write some lyrics for your simple two-note tracks. To make the task easier, here's a short checklist of handy buzzwords you might pick up from: cocaine, glamour, glitz, jetset, sex, lipstick, sunglasses, champagne, night life, disco, 1982, space invaders, Pac-Man, trash, romantic, Euro, electronique, lifestyle, robots, computer, sleaze, auto, plaza, dancer, fashion, style, human, cars, magazine, TV, seduction, silver screen, plastic, passion, android, leatherette, suicide, porno, telephone, neon, futuristic, robots, robots and robots. . Buy, borrow or steal some French and German dictionaries and pick up from them some sexy/authoritarian-sounding catchphrases to make your lyrics more credible . Now announce in public that you're gay, lesbian or at least bisexual, . Try to manage yourself a record deal with International Deejay Gigolos. . When you're prancing around on stage like some stupid ass you are, tell all journalists about your high "concept" combining music, fashion, dance and performance art. . An occasional DJ gig will add to your credibility. Don't worry if you can't really mix records. Just get yourself anything made in The Hague and Detroit, plus for cheap laughs some cheesy old new wave, Italodisco and 80s pop records you found from a junkyard sale, and pretend you're "ironic" when drunken and stoned idiots get into it, cheer and clap their hands. . When journalists at trendy magazines and glossies call you "electroclash", furiously deny this and tell you were into this stuff years ago before it became fashionable.
