Christmas Traditions Listening: listen to your teacher’s pronunciation. Ask questions. The first most obvious sign of Christmas comes in November, when shops put up Christmas decorations. Christmas lights are used to decorate some of the main streets. There are often special ceremonies when these are turned on. The lights represent the stars that shone in the sky on the first Christmas Eve. Most British people also send Christmas cards to their friends. Cards are displayed in homes throughout the Christmas season. Christmas trees are put up in December. These are decorated in different ways. Red, gold and silver are popular colours for decorations.

Christmas Traditions Now read these. Focus on pronunciation and intonation: British people normally buy Christmas presents for other members of their own family. Some people also give presents to some of their friends. Presents are normally covered with colourful wrapping paper and exchanged on 25 December.

Many people like to go to a church service at Christmas. One popular service is the Midnight Service on Christmas Eve. This starts at about 11:30pm and lasts about an hour so it is Christmas Day at the end of the service. The word Christmas comes from “Christ’s Mass”. This is the annual Church Service held to honour the birth of Christ.

Christmas Traditions In Britain, a traditional Christmas cake is a rich fruit cake topped with marzipan and covered with white icing sugar. This is eaten at tea-time (in the late afternoon) on any day shortly before or after Christmas. Mince pies are also very popular.

A typical Christmas meal is prepared. Roast turkey is the most common meat, but other birds such as chicken or goose are also served for the Christmas meal. Stuffing, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts or other vegetables and gravy are eaten with the meat.
