Thanksgiving Thanksgiving ceremonies were held in North America long before the arrival of European settlers. The native tribes held harvest festivals that included singing, dancing and praying to their ancestors. In 1620, a group of 100 people tool the ship “May Flower” from Plymouth, England, to find a better life in America. They were called the Pilgrims. When they landed in North America, they did not know much about the land. Many died of illness and starvation that first winter. The next year was much better for them. The Native Americans taught the settlers how to grow corn and other crops; They taught them to gather the sap from maple trees to make maple syrup; They showed them how to find wild rice and berries; The settlers of the new colony also learnt how to catch fish and hunt. They had a lot to be thankful for. They planned a feast, and invited the Native Americans to join them. They celebrated for three days. This was the first Thanksgiving. English Language

Thanksgiving They planned a feast, and invited the Native Americans to join them. They celebrated for three days. This was the first Thanksgiving. Two hundred years later, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. The fourth Thursday in November is celebrated as Thanksgiving Day in the USA. Thanksgiving is a time to spend with family. People stop work to give thanks for life, health, family, and freedom. Some spend time praying in church, while others relax at home. Most families share a festive meal together. They cook traditional dishes such as turkey with cranberry sauce. Pumpkin pie is a popular dessert.
