Business Intelligence TCO Management MC/EMpower i.series™ 4.0 The Problem: With the constant growth and change in today’s technology environments, infrastructure managers and CIOs are trying to gain control of the ever-growing infrastructure management costs. Attacking this problem with point solution products designed to alleviate only the most obvious symptoms in areas such as network, desktop, database, and help center management is common in most organizations. In addition, infrastructure managers continue to automate existing processes such as inventory management, service management, and change management in an attempt to control escalating TCO costs. While GartnerGroup does state in the April 1996 research note Best Practice and TCO, that “best practices can reduce TCO by 26 percent,” customers seldom are capable of truly measuring gains realized (if any) after such point solution products are fully deployed. These IT organizations cannot perform the analysis needed in a timely and accurate manner that will allow them to fully utilize these procedures and point solutions. In the final analysis customers do not have a complete solution capable of managing and analyzing infrastructure TCO cost escalation in ever-changing environments.

An IT manager who is planning the deployment of 30,000 systems across an enterprise needs to have complete control of the bottom line to completely justify the business case. MainControl’s TCO Management is one part of the Business Intelligence solution that enables you to quickly and easily access information about your technology resources to make timely and critical decisions related to infrastructure costs. Whether it is comparing an upgrade of two operating systems or which e-mail package make sense for your organization, MainControl’s TCO Management Solution will empower your managers to make the correct decision. In the April 1998 research note Mastering the Bottom Line, GartnerGroup states, “Without a welldefined methodology for total cost of ownership (TCO) and because of the highly complex nature of the calculations, it is nearly impossible for an enterprise to determine whether—or by how much —a new IT expenditure will really increase or decrease its total computing spending.” MainControl’s Business Intelligence solutions delivers pre-constructed asset cost, service, procurement, financial, and technology refresh management and planning analysis models. Each analysis model is specific to the information commonly used within the scope of that particular business function. For example, contracted payments and chargeback rates are crucial to the analysis of corporate asset cost models. Likewise, order quantities and costs are critical to supporting procurement analysis. The end result, corporate executives have all the necessary infrastructure data and analysis mechanisms available at their fingertips for cost decision making support.

MainControl’s TCO Management Solution ValueQuest ValueQuest automatically, and on an ongoing basis, calculates and manages the TCO of an organization’s technology infrastructure assets. Using ValueQuest, corporations can quickly analyze current costs and compare them to industry averages in order to highlight problem areas. With this information, CFOs, CIOs and technology professionals can plan and implement improvements and then re-evaluate costs to determine progress in reaching corporate goals.

TCO Study Services and Consulting The objective of the TCO study is to gather current asset and cost information in order to create a baseline of understanding and detail which will become the future Total Cost of Ownership measurement metric. The output of the TCO study will provide you with baseline costs and returns for which an optimization plan may be designed. Deliverables of the Service:
