Congratulations, you have just acquired the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, an ergonomic and highperformance modem offering dynamic management of an ADSL-based Internet connection and its sharing over a local network. Before using it, you will require a subscription with an ADSL service provider and an Internet service provider using ADSL.

Before starting In this manual, we consider that the following conditions are true: 1. You have a Analog line with an ADSL access. 2. You have a subscription with an Internet service provider (ISP), who has confirmed your connection parameters (identifiers, password, DNS servers, etc).

Contents of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST box In addition to the modem guaranteed for 2 years, the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST box also contains the following elements:

a BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM containing the software and the documentation in PDF format

Power supply cable

Straight Ethernet cable (green) used to connect the adapter to the computer

an ADSL filter (only for France) The packaging should contain also: - a quick start guide, - a warranty registration card for the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter.

ADSL RJ11 cable for connecting the adapter to the ADSL filter (which is connected to the telephone jack)

Technical assistance The BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter and its documentation are designed to be as simple as possible, so that they can be used not only by professionals but also by the individual user at home. The BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST User’s guide contains practical information that will allow you to rapidly install and use the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter. Before proceeding with the installation of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter, we recommend that you register your product on the BeWAN systems web site (http://www.bewan.com). It is essential if you would like to enjoy the benefits of the after-sale service. Follow the step-by-step instructions in this User’s guide. If a problem arises during the installation or configuration of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter, refer to the instructions provided on the warranty card. Note: for information about the BeWAN systems technical assistance service, or to obtain product upgrades, consult the BeWAN systems web site.

Knowledge required In the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter User’s guide, we assume that you are already familiar with the Windows user interface, commands and utilities. We will therefore not go over these points. If necessary, please refer to the Windows manual or the Windows on-line help. Prior knowledge of telecommunications is not necessary when using the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter.

Usage precautions Carefully read the following safety instructions before installing or using the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST. The usage instructions must be followed exactly.

Location •

Avoid using, placing or storing the adapter in areas which are exposed to intense light or high temperatures, or close to sources of heat. High temperatures can damage the adapter. The maximum temperature cannot not exceed 40°C.



Avoid installing the adapter in a humid or dusty area.



Keep the adapter in a secure and stable location. Serious damage could result if the adapter falls.



Keep the adapter out of the reach of children.

Upkeep and maintenance •

Do not open, disassemble or modify any part of the adapter. Any disassembly or modification could result in a strong electric discharge. Internal inspections, modifications and repairs must imperatively be carried out by accredited and qualified technicians. Opening the adapter or any internal modification will void the warranty.



Before cleaning the adapter, disconnect its power supply.



When cleaning the adapter, do not use certain chemical products which could damage plastic materials. Do not use substances containing alcohol, benzene, paint thinner or other flammable products. The use of these products can result in a fire.



Do not bring the adapter into contact with water or other liquids. No liquid must get inside the adapter. If the outside of the adapter comes into contact with a liquid, wipe it using a soft and absorbent cloth. If a liquid or other substance gets inside the adapter, disconnect the cables. If you continue using adapter, there is the risk of a fire or electrical discharge.

Cables •

Only use the supplied accessories.



Make sure that the cables are laid out such that no one can trip over them or walk on them.



Do not run the cables through a passage or in an area where they may be pinched.



When disconnecting the cables, hold the solid part. Pulling on the flexible part of the cable can damage the insulation or strip the wire, thus creating a risk of fire or electrical discharge.



Immediately discontinue using the adapter if any smoke is seen to come from it.

General issues: The installation procedure for the modem This manual contains a detailed description of the installation procedure for the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter. We recommend that you follow the installation steps in order. Step 1: Connecting your BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST. Refer to the chapter “Connecting the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST” on page 11). Step 2 (optional): Accessing the modem’s Web configurator. This step is required if the default ADSL configuration (VPI=8; VCI=35) does not match the geographical zone in which you are located. If this is the case, you should access the modem’s administration pages and modify these parameters. Otherwise, move on to step 3. Note: on a PC or Macintosh, use the corresponding Detection wizard to access the Web configurator. This utility allows you to assign the modem an IP address that falls within the same addressing plan as your computer. Step 3: Installing the BeWAN PPPoE software in order to establish your Internet connection. Refer to the chapter “Creating the connection” on page 21. Before beginning, deactivate any software that might disrupt the installation procedure, such as anti-virus products. Close all open applications.

Connecting the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST This chapter provides the various connection diagrams for the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST. Note: when using your ADSL connection, you can simultaneously use your telephone or fax. Important: to maintain the quality of your communications, every telephone wall socket connected to a telephone or fax must be equipped with an ADSL filter.

Direct connection Proceed as follows to directly connect a computer to the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST: 1. Locate the straight Ethernet cable (green). Connect one end of this cable to the modem’s Ethernet port, and the other end to the RJ45 on the computer’s Ethernet card. 2. Locate the ADSL cable (RJ11/RJ11). Connect one end of this cable to the ADSL port on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, and the other end to your phone jack. 3. Locate the power supply cable. Connect one end of this cable to the DC IN port on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, and the other end to an electrical outlet which complies with the specifications indicated on the power pack.

Indirect connection to an external hub To indirectly connect a computer to the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, using an external Ethernet hub (not supplied), proceed as follows: 1. Obtain a crossed Ethernet cable (additional cable not provided). Connect one end of this cable to the Ethernet port on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter, and the other end to one of the Ethernet ports on the external hub. 2. Then connect the computer to the external Ethernet hub by the intermediary of a straight cable. Note: of course, you can connect other computers and equipment to the external hub. 3. Locate the ADSL cable (RJ11/RJ11). Connect one end of this cable to the ADSL port on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, and the other end to your phone jack. 4. Locate the power supply cable. Connect one end of this cable to the DC IN port on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, and the other end to an electrical outlet which complies with the specifications indicated on the power pack.

Specific connection: modem connection to the XboxTM Live The BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST is compatible with the Xbox video game console. XboxTM Live is an online game service. To connect your modem to your Xbox console, proceed as follows: 1. Locate the straight Ethernet cable (green). Connect one end of the cable to the Ethernet port on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, and the other end to the console’s Ethernet port. 2. Locate the ADSL cable (RJ11/RJ11). Connect one end of this cable to the ADSL port on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, and the other end to your phone jack. 3. Locate the power supply cable. Connect one end of this cable to the DC IN port on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, and the other end to an electrical outlet which complies with the specifications indicated on the power pack.

Indicator lights and rear side of the adapter Indicator lights The BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST adapter has three indicator lights (LED) which provide constant information about the status of the adapter and the ADSL line: Indicator name

Rear side •

The RESET button enables you to restart the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST and restore its factory settings. Simply hold the button down for around 10 seconds.



The Ethernet port is used to connect your PC, a hub or a switch.



The connector designed for the power cable is used to switch on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST. Note: only use the adaptor supplied.



The ADSL port is used to connect one end of the ADSL cable (RJ11). The other end should be plugged into the ADSL filter.

Access to the modem’s HTML menu Once the modem has been physically installed, you only need to access the Web configurator to modify the default ADSL parameters (VPI=8; VCI=35) if they do not match the geographical zone in which you are located. The modem is configured in HTML mode. This mode provides for very easily configuring of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST using your computer’s Web browser, such as Microsoft® Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator). Your browsing software must be correctly configured. Note: depending on the version of the Web browser used, the dialogue boxes and the HTML page display may change slightly. In our example, we use the Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6.0 software.

What you need to know to access the modem’s HTML menu: The default IP address of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST is “192.168.1.1” with a subnet mask of “255.255.255.0”. To be able to access the Web configurator, your modem and your computer must be within the same addressing plan. To access the modem’s administration pages, whether you have a PC or a Macintosh, you can use a Detection wizard that will enable you to assign the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST an IP address that is compatible with the addressing plan of your computer. Note: this means you do not have to modify your computer’s IP address or reboot (under Windows 95, 98 and Me).

Using the Detection Wizard on a PC To access the Web interface, proceed as follows: 1. Launch the modem detection tool on the CD-ROM. Insert the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. If your configuration is set up for it, the installation program will launch automatically. If not, run the autorun.exe program which is located at the root of the CD-ROM. 2. Click on BeWAN ADSL Ethernet Detection Wizard.

5. If the IP addresses of your modem and your computer are not in the same addressing plan (as in our example), move to the New IP Address section and type in the modem’s new IP address (for example: 100.0.100.10). Click on Change to confirm the modification.

6. When your modem has been found with its new IP address, click on Launch Modem Configurator…. 7. Once your browser has connected with the modem, a dialogue box appears. Here, you enter the identification elements (username and password) needed to administer the modem. These identification parameters are the following: •

8. If you do not wish to identify yourself each time you configure the modem from this computer, click Save this password in your list of passwords. Note: in this case, anyone with access to this computer will be able to access the modem in HTML mode. 9. Once your identification is acknowledged, the Main menu of BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST Web Configurator is displayed. If you wish to modify the ADSL parameters, refer to the chapter “Verification and configuration of the ADSL parameters” on page 18.

Using the Detection Wizard on a Mac To access the modem’s administration pages, you should do the following: 1. Launch the modem Detection wizard, which can be found on the CD-ROM. Insert the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in the drive of your Macintosh. 2. Double-click on the CD-ROM icon. 3. Double-click on the folder Ethernet, Assistant Ethernet Ethernet ST assistant. The wizard window opens.

Verification and configuration of the ADSL parameters ADSL line synchronisation You have just installed the adapter. Before you connect to the Internet, you must make sure of the proper synchronisation with the ADSL line. To this end, first make sure that your ADSL line is indeed connected to the adapter (refer to the section “Connecting the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST” on page 11). Proceed as follows: 1. In the System administration part, click on ADSL status. 2. Opposite the Line status heading, wait for the message Synchronized to appear. The synchronisation with the ADSL line has now been made.

If that does not resolve the problem, check with your operator to make sure that your ADSL line has been activated.

Possible modification of the ADSL parameters During the installation, default ASDL parameters were selected. Depending on your geographical region, these parameters may not correspond with those needed for the proper operation of your modem. As such, you may be required to modify the characteristics. We recommend that you first of all obtain the necessary information from your telecom operator. If these default parameters are correct, you have only to create your Internet connection. Install the BeWAN PPPoE software to create your connection. If, however, these parameters do not correspond with those provided by your telecom operator, you will have to change them: 1. In the ADSL parameters section of the Main menu, enter the new VPI and VCI provided by your telecom operator. 2. Click on the button Apply. 3. Confirm the modifications by clicking on OK.

4. Then return to the Main menu. Click on Click here to reconnect.

5. Check that the new parameters have been correctly taken into account after the automatic reboot.

Creating the connection With Windows 95 Installation of the BeWAN PPPoE Before installing the BeWAN PPPoE software, you must have connected the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST. Installation of the Remote network access 1.3 The installation of the BeWAN PPPoE for Windows 95 requires the prior installation of the Remote network access 1.3. Proceed as follows: 1. Insert the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your drive. Note: once the CD-ROM has been installed, the driver installation program may launch automatically. Disregard this. Close the Autorun window. 2. In the Windows Explorer, indicate the following path (supposing that your CD-ROM drive is drive D): D:\ACCpack. 3. Double-click on the msdun13uk.exe file. The following window is displayed. Click on Yes.

4. Carefully read the licence contract, and then click on Yes. The driver installation begins. 5. You will then have to restart your computer. Click on Yes.

6. The installation resumes once the computer has rebooted. Note: Windows may ask you to insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM in your PC in order to copy files for your system. Important: if a version conflict message appears, you must imperatively click on Yes in order to keep the most recent file(s).

7. You will then have to restart your computer. Click on Yes.

Installing the protocol 1. Run the autorun.exe program which is located at the root of the CD-ROM. 2. Click on the product BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST, and then select your language. 3. Click on Installation and then on BeWAN PPPoE. 4. A window asks if you would like to install the PPPoE protocol. Click on Yes. 5. Carefully read the licence contract, and then click on Accept. The installation of the drivers starts. Note: Windows may ask you to insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM in your PC in order to copy files for your system. Important: if a version conflict message appears, you must imperatively click on Yes in order to keep the most recent file(s). 6. You will then have to restart your computer. Click on Yes.

Elements installed Element has been added to your system. In order to see it, click on Start, point to Settings, then click successively on Control Panel, System and on the Device Manager tab. •

In the Network adapters, the WAN/PPPOE/ADSL miniport element has been added.

Establishing the connection 1. During the installation, a connection named PPPoE connection was created. Double-click on the My Computer icon located on your desktop. 2. Then double-click on Dial-Up Networking, and then on PPPoE connection. The corresponding connection window opens. You have only to enter your identification settings.

3. Under the User name and Password headings, enter the identification parameters provided by your Internet access provider. Notes on the Internet connection: •

The terminology used by the various Internet service providers can vary. To identify the user name, the following expressions are also sometimes used: “client account”, “connection identifier”, etc.



Do not confuse the connection identifiers (user name and password) with the message system identification elements which your Internet service provider may have given you.



The connection identifiers are case sensitive.

4. If you do not want to enter your password upon each connection, select Save password. Note: in this case, any person with access to your PC will be able to access the Internet through your account. 5. Do not pay attention to the Phone number field. There is no need to modify it. Note: with the ADSL service, it is not a call number which provides the connection with the Internet service provider; rather, it is the user name.

6. Then click on Connect in the connection window. The connection is carried out and your identification parameters are checked.

7. If the parameters are correct, the connection is established in a few seconds. The connection window automatically disappears. To the right of the task bar, the remote access indicator also appears.

Using and ending the connection Once the connection has been made, you can use the Internet software of your choice. To visit a web site, launch your browser. When you have finished, you should disconnect. Indeed, closing the Internet software does not necessarily terminate the connection in progress. The remote access indicator, which is dependent on the Remote Access, indicates that the connection has been established. Double-clicking on this indicator will open a window which provides the main connection parameters (speed, connection duration...).

The Disconnect button will interrupt the connection. Note: you do not have to open the previously mentioned window. To interrupt the connection in progress, right-click the mouse on the remote access indicator, and then click on Disconnect.

Uninstalling the BeWAN PPPoE 1. Click on Start, then point to Settings, and then click on Control Panel. 2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon. 3. In the Install/Uninstall window, select the PPP over Ethernet and then click on Add/Remove…. 4. A confirmation window opens. Click on Yes.

5. The uninstall procedure begins. Note: Windows may ask you to insert your Windows 95 CD-ROM into your PC. Important: if a version conflict message appears, you must imperatively click on Yes in order to keep the most recent file(s). 6. You will then have to restart your computer. Click on Yes.

With Windows 98/Me Installation of the BeWAN PPPoE Installing the protocol 1. Insert the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your drive. If your PC’s configuration is set up for it, the installation program will launch automatically. If it does not, run the autorun.exe program which is located at the root of the CD-ROM. 2. With Windows 98, your Windows CD-ROM may be required during the update phase.



Windows may ask you for information about your site. Enter the area code for your region. After entering this information, click on Close.

6. A window asks if you would like to install the PPPoE protocol. Click on Yes.

In the Connect via PopUp menu, select PPP over Ethernet.



In the Modem PopUp menu, select BeWAN ADSL Modem.

4. Close the window and save the changes to the configuration. 5. You must then check the TCP/IP parameters. In the Apple menu, point to Control Panels and then click on TCP/IP. The TCP/IP parameters are not specific to ADSL and are therefore the same for all Internet connections. They are indicated by your Internet Service Provider. •

With Mac OS X With Mac OS X, it is not necessary to install the BeWAN PPPoE. This protocol is already included in the operating system. The parameterisation and establishment of the connection using the PPPoE protocol are described below.

Establishing the connection 1. Double-click on your hard disk icon, then Applications, and then on System Preferences. 2. Click on Network. 3. In the Show pop-up menu of the Network window, select Built-in Ethernet. 4. Click on the PPPoE tab in order to enter the information about the subscription which you have taken out with an Internet access provider.

6. In the Service Provider field, enter your connection name. Note: this name plays no role in the connection. It serves only to identify your connection. You can therefore choose whatever you like. Modem update The modem update is carried out in two steps. The first involves only taking the update into account in the modem’s buffer memory. If you wish to permanently update your modem, click on Save in the second part. Proceed as follows: Note: if you unplug the modem, therefore cutting off its power supply, this update will not be hardwired into the modem’s memory. 1. In the Main menu, click on Modem update. 2. In the heading Firmware image, click on Browse... in order to indicate the access path to the update file. 3. Then click on the button Send in order to load the update file into the buffer memory of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST. 4. You must then imperatively click on Activate in order for the file to be taken into account.

5. To complete the update, click on Save.

Rebooting the modem After saving an update, we recommend that you reboot your modem. Proceed as follows: 1. In the System administration part of the Main menu, click on System restart. 2. Select Keep the current configuration, then click on OK.

Restoring the default parameters To restore the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST using its Web configurator, proceed as follows: 1. In the System administration part of the Main menu, click on System restart. 2. You have two possible options for restoring to the default configuration: •

Restore factory configuration: select this option if you would like the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST to be reset to its original configuration (LAN and ADSL parameters). Reminder: by default, the LAN and ADSL parameters are the following: IP address: 192.168.1.1 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 VPI: 8 VCI: 35



Restore default LAN configuration: select this option if you would like the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet ST to reboot with its configuration (LAN parameters only).
