What an amazing adventure!” This accomplished beauty usually gets what she wants through determination and hard work, and offers this advice for women hoping to launch their own Playboy careers: “Don’t change anything about yourself—go into it exactly the way you really are. “I’ve always been very comfortable with my sexual being.” PILAR LASTRA Miss August ’04 considered a variety of careers before committing to acting. “One day I’d want to be a brain surgeon, the next a bus driver, then a teacher, then an undercover agent. Eventually I decided to pursue acting because I can pretend to do all those things!” After a tiring day of auditions, Pilar retreats to her bedroom sanctuary and her “super fluffy and comfy mahogany four-poster bed and mounds of pillows. I try to keep clutter out of my room, but it definitely has a warm, inviting feel to it. My favorite thing about it is the pillows. CHRISTI SHAKE She insists she must not have been a beautiful baby. “Every time my mom took me out someone would mistake me for a cute little boy—even when I was wearing a pink dress! LANI TODD Did posing for Playboy awaken her sexuality? “Oh, no. I think I was very much awake and aware of my sexuality at a young age. CARA ZAVALETA Although November ’04’s Playmate has never been bashful about nudity, she credits Irving Wallace’s book The Nympho and Other Maniacs with validating her reasons for going public with it. “In the book, women from the past two centuries talk about how they’ve gone against social standards in order to liberate future generations. That pumped me up and gave me the confidence I needed.” In public Cara bows only slightly to society’s fundamental puritanism. “I love wearing next to nothing. Gauzy dresses are my favorites because they’re barely on you.” But revealing apparel and her drop-dead looks are only two reasons why she attracts so much attention. Another is her charismatic personality. “I am pretty goofy and bubbly, which makes me more approachable. People aren’t intimidated by me at all—probably because I don’t take myself very seriously. These thoughtful touches may help provide the key to her heart, but not necessarily to a wedding chapel.
