We will study the potential market our product:

Defining the product To define the product, we need to investigate on several things. We must carry out a survey by email in order: to know the strengths and weaknesses of our clients to provide a product tailored to their needs. We must specify the ideal price. To complete the investigation, we focused on information already available from various sources INSEE in order to study the competition and to see how we will deal with the sale. Survey sent to 100 people:

What is your sex?

Do you live in an apartment? Do you live in house?

What minimum price would you pay for a Wi-Fi video camera? What maximum price would make a video by Wi-Fi? In which county do you live?

Dear Mr Oxford,

I am writing to announce that our company called LCD technology develops a new product which can be interesting because we give most safety for your company for an affordable price. Indeed, it is a Wi-Fi movie camera System. This concept permits to have a wireless movie monitoring system. This advantage of our system is we don’t need any wire to connect the movie camera in your network. Our product can be used for monitoring system or intercom. So, we can sometimes use the existent Wi-Fi networks of our client, or we set up them.

Please contact us again if you have any questions by phone in 0630 481 106 or email in [email protected].

I look forward to hearing from you soon

Yours sincerely,

Best regards, DIEYE Nogaye

Phoning D: Yes, hello? CC: This is Clement CHAMPAGNE from LCD Technologies. Could I speak to the Director please? D: Speaking CC: I phone you after a mail that you send me back for the video transmission system by WiFi, in order to give you other specifications of our system. D: Oh, yes right. I want to know what is the working distance of your system? CC: In fact, it depends of the power supply that you put on. The system operates from 0 to 20 kilometres, in normal operating. In which appliance would you use it? D: Our offices are based in London, in a fifty-floors building, on the forty-seven floor. Do you think that your system could be transmit, in spite of this height? CC: Oh yes. We have just to increase the power of Radio Frequency signal. D: And what about the law? I know that radio communications emissions powers are restricted. CC: Exactly. In fact, it depends of the country: in France the threshold is fixed at 27µV/m and in England too. But in our case, the system could emit at a power of 13 dBm that is equivalent to 10µV/m so it doesn’t matter. D: Well, I think your product was designed for my company. How could I get this system? CC: I was wondering if I could come over to you and arrange a demo in your building. D: Sure, what about next month, on the 20th? CC: Ok, that’s fine. D: Can I just have your number, please? CC: It is 0630 481 106. That’s my personal number. I look forward to seeing you. D: Right. See you on next month. CC: Goodbye. D: Goodbye.

Then, our company sends to interested customers some technical specifications about Wi-Fi and about

our system.

Part I: Wi-Fi In this part, we are talking about the Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity. The technology WI-FI based on standard 802.11 enables us to create a local network (Lan) without any need for wiring to connect the computers to each other. There are many Wi-Fi standards. The 800.11g standard is currently the most widespread. It proposes a theoretical rate of 54Mbs with a range round about 300 meters. The band of frequency is the band of the 2.4 GHz with three radio channels available. Here are examples of wireless technology.

In practical, Wi-Fi makes it possible to connect laptops, desktop machines, personal assistants (PDA) ,any type of peripheral to a high-speed link or for example in our case the video transmission. There are many possibilities to set up the wireless network offered to us, according to the material which the user already. has In all cases, the computers desiring to profit by a wireless connectivity have to be equipped with wireless internal cards or an USB wireless adapter in order to be able to communicate with the access point. This equipment without any wire will come to replace the traditional Ethernet card. It is of course possible to connect some machines to the router if the latest is close to the former, and to use wireless technology for the most distant computers. We can sometimes use the existent Wi-Fi networks of our client, or we can install them. To set up a solution without any wire we need to take a Wi-Fi access point. In order to converse with the access point, each machine must be equipped Wi-Fi with a Ethernet card or a Universal Serial Bus (USB) adapter. In order to make the wireless network safe, we have can generate WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) keys. This protective system is unfortunately not without faults and is less safe than a cable network on which the only way to reach the data is to connect physically to this network. In theory, a machine passing close to the access point can try to crack your key WEP and thus to have access to your LAN. The WI-FI technology hasn’t a very great range, that can be a disadvantage but that remains a safety requirement. The Wifi uses the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) coding. OFDM is a analogical technical of data transmission. To emit a signal , the OFDM divides a band of frequency into several secondary canals spaced by free zones of fixed sizes. After having installed the Wi-Fi network, our movie camera will connect in the same way as the computers.

Part II :Video transmission system by Wi-Fi

This system is composed of a miniature video cam and two circuit boards: an emission board and a reception board. It is wireless because the system operates by Wi-Fi. It works at 2.4 GHz, the Wi-Fi’s frequencies.

I) Video signal transmission In order to transmit a colour video signal, we need 10 MHz of bandwidth, for each colour component. A colour video signal is composed of three colours: Red – Green – Blue, because each colour can be built with the sum of these three primary colours. To reduce the used bandwidth in video systems, we can transmit a linear combination of these basic signals (RGB). This process allows a significant bandwidth reduction, in spite of a small data loss. The cameras we use deliver signals at PAL standard (stand for Phase Alternative Line), that has been the European standard since 1962. In this standard, the three signals that allow generation of modulated signal are:

Luminance signal : Y = 0,299R + 0,587G + 0,114B

Red chrominance signal : V = 0,877(R – Y)

Blue chrominance signal : U = 0,493(B – Y)

Luminance signal gives data about the brightness of the picture. Chrominance signals are used to restore the three components: red, green and blue. The transmitted signal will be a composite signal that is the three previous signals (luminance and chrominance signals).

LAGIN CHAMPAGNE DIEYE

Page 16

Wi-Fi movie camera

2008

The PAL standard characteristics are: Picture frequency: 50 Hz Line frequency: 15,625 Hz Picture carrier: 4,433,618.75 Hz Sound carrier: 5.5 MHz

II) Emission board This board has three inputs:

-video signal input -left sound input -right sound input

So we can transmit sounds in stereophony. Video composite signal is frequency modulated with a carrier frequency fp and the two sound signals are frequency modulated with carrier frequency fp +/- 6 MHz and fp +/-6.5 MHz (See Figure 2).

LAGIN CHAMPAGNE DIEYE

Page 17

Wi-Fi movie camera

2008

Output signal is a Radio Frequency signal (RF). With the emission board we can also monitor the carrier frequency with two switches I1 and I2 on the top of the case.

III) Reception board This board is used to receive the RF signal. It realizes frequency demodulation of video signal and sound signals. It has three outputs, like the emission board:

-video signal output -left sound output -right sound output

LAGIN CHAMPAGNE DIEYE

Page 18

Wi-Fi movie camera

2008

There is a switch in the top of the board that allows selecting one of the four reception carrier frequencies. And four LED on the board give us information about the selected frequency. To demodulate the RF signal, reception board use a phase locked loop (PLL) to realize the frequency demodulation.

We have just to look at the signal between the low-pass filter and the VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator). It is an application of the PLL system. IV) Antenna Two antennas are necessary to transmit signals: one for the emission and one for the reception. They work in the band of Wi-Fi frequencies (about 2.4 GHz). To estimate the length of the antenna, we have to know the wavelength of this frequency: λ = c/f c = speed of light in m/s

=>

300, 000,000 / 2, 400, 000,000 = 0.125 m f = frequency in Hz

λ = wavelength in m

So an antenna has to lengthen 12.5 cm to operate in these signals frequency.

Report

This project allows us to work together like a team. Moreover, we permit to develop one product in our domain, and try to sell it. With this project, we had to work on the marketing of a new product. It allows us to improve our CVs and our technical English. We had no problem to find data in English, but it was more difficult to imagine a scenario to sell our product.
