Depending on the end use, water or a dessicant is placed in the base of the container. The specimen is then quickly sealed and placed in a test chamber that controls the atmosphere. Vapour loss or gain is measured by recording the weight of the sample at different intervals over a period of time.

Model 68 Vapometer The vapometer cup consists of a light aluminium cup and a flanged rim with a neoprene gasket that holds the specimen in place. This design was specifically used to eliminate edge leakage. The specimen is securely sealed between the lower and upper flange with six knurled head screws. There are some applications where the mechanical seal does not provide an adequate seal. In these applications a wax seal must be employed.
