SURETE Administrator Guide Veritas Backup Exec Application

Version 1.00 23/07/2003

Using the Veritas Backup Exec software with the SURETE PRO The SURETE PRO has a build-in backup software for data protection and also supports commercial tape software, meaning you can backup data stored in the SURETE PRO server using the build-in software (Backup and Restore function) or use a commercial tape backup software. Backup Exec is a data management solution for Windows server network. With its client/server design, Backup Exec provides fast, reliable backup and restore functions for servers and workstation across the network. Backup is crucial for data protection, and Backup Exec offers you many choices to create/ restore jobs to protect your data. This document will explain how to backup/restore data with the SURETE PRO using the Veritas Backup Exec. Hereby two simple examples for your reference.

1. Backup of data stored in the SURETE PRO server onto a Veritas Backup server Tape device. 2.

Backup Windows file Server data into the SURETE PRO server.

A. Backing up data stored in the SURETE PRO onto a Veritas Backup server tape drive. If the SURETE PRO acts as a file server in your network, you can use the Veritas Backup Exec for data protection. In this solution, you can backup the data stored in the SURETE PRO onto the Backup server’s tape device using the Veritas Backup Exec software.

3. Setting the Logon Account Management in the Veritas Backup Exec Go to Network -> Logon Accounts… In this example, we will use “domain\administrator” as the default logon account.

2. Setting the SURETE PRO share permission using the SURETE PRO admin page. (Based on which data you want to backup onto the backup server’s tape device) Go to: Security => share =>share permission Setting the permission for the relative shares (the domain\administrator user must have enough permission to access this share via the network).

3. Enabling selection of user shares in the Veritas Backup Exec. Go to: tools => options =>Job Defaults =>Network You have to enable this option to access the SURETE PRO server share.

4. Creating the backup job a. On the navigation bar click: “Backup” From the backup selection pane, select the shared folders which are stored in the SURETE PRO server and which are to be backed up.

Please note: The SURETE PRO server can not install the Veritas Backup Exec “Remote Agent”, therefore it will prompt a message when you click the SURETE PRO’s shares, this warning will not affect any data backup.

b. On the Properties pane: Destination click => “Device and Media” Select the tape device onto which you want to back up the data.

You can select additional configuration options for your backup job before selecting to run or submit the job.

c. Run the job: click “Run Now”, or under Frequency: Click “Schedule” If you want to run the job now, click “Run Now”, otherwise, click “Schedule” to set the scheduling option you want to use, then click “Submit”.

5. Viewing completed jobs On the navigation barclick => “Job Monitor” You can view the completion of the job on the “Job History” pane.

Please note: The job status shows “Completed with exceptions”, which is thus different from “Successful”. This is because the Veritas Backup Exec can not initialize the Remote Agent for the SURETE PRO, therefore it will complete this job and the job status will report “Completed with exceptions” (because the SURETE PRO does not support the Remote Agent installation as explained before).

This is the successful result of the already backed up data which is stored in the SURETE PRO and onto the to Backup server’s tape device with the data also being verified during the backup job.

B. Backing up a Windows file Server data onto the SURETE PRO. In this kind of application, you can backup the server’s data (local PC) onto the SURETE PRO with Veritas Backup Exec which offers a feature called “Backup-to-Disk”, which allows you to backup data to a folder onto a hard disk instead of onto a tape device. For this you can map a share in the SURETE PRO server as a Backup-to-Disk Folders for your data management solution.
