One of sailing’s hottest properties. A European circuit of spectacular sailboat racing designed to capture the attention of the media and the general public and to provide thrilling, interactive corporate hospitality experiences for sponsor clients – for passionate sailors and non-sailors alike.

40 feet long, the lightweight carbon fibre catamaran can be easily packed into a standard 40-foot container on its own road trailer and quickly assembled by its crew, making the class flexible and able to compete at many types of venues.

The Extreme 40 is constructed under a strict one design rule and a one manufacturer class. This creates a level playing field out on the water and it is down to the skills of the sailors to gain the edge over their competitors.

Yves Loday, Olympic gold medallist, is the skipper of our team and the architect and designer of the Extreme 40. The Extreme 40 design brings together the excitement of a ‘beach cat’ ride with the power of an ocean-racing multihull. The technology used to build an Extreme 40 is as cutting edge as the boat design. The construction employs many of the same build processes and ideas used for Formula 1 racing car. In order to create a strong lightweight structure, materials used to construct the hull of the Extreme 40 are joined together in a mould and then placed in an autoclave, a pressurized oven that allows an intense vacuum on the materials while baking the hull at 120°C. The Extreme 40 is the largest production boat ever built in an autoclave and has set a new standard in mid-size multihull construction.

The Extreme 40 is sailed by four top-level, physically fit sailors who in the iShares Cup are accompanied by a VIP guest. Though the Extreme 40 is not a complicated boat to sail it requires its crew to maintain seamless teamwork and good communication to ensure they remain at the top of the fleet. Clumsy maneuvers and bad sail trimming will have a detrimental effect on the boat's position in the race, so all teams aim to be smooth in their timing and in their onboard dialogue.

1 – Helmsman: The helmsman, also known as the skipper, is responsible for steering the boat using an extended tiller arm. This sailor is the equivalent to the driver in a rally car; taking direction from his crew of co-drivers and carefully steering his vehicle through the best and fastest course on the track ahead, from the start to the end of the race. The helmsman will also impart information back to his team telling them when he plans to alter the direction, pick up speed or change sails. 2 - Mainsail Trimmer/ Tactician: As the acceleration man, the mainsail trimmer controls the biggest sail on the boat. He is responsible for the blistering speeds that the Extreme 40 can achieve. This crew member stands just behind the helmsman and puts the pedal to the floor by pulling the sail in and can slam on the brakes by letting the same sail out. Getting the correct sail trim takes skill and practice and a good mainsail trimmer can help a team achieve the difference in speed over other competitors. The mainsail trimmer may also act as a tactician, providing information to the helmsman during the race. The role of the tactician is similar to the co-driver’s role, providing information on the upcoming track, positions of other rivals and shifting weather conditions that may impact the fastest way to the finish line. 3 - Headsail Trimmer: Also responsible for the speed and acceleration on the Extreme 40, he controls the jib and the gennaker via a winch at the front of the boat. This crew member will work closely with the bowman who looks after the front of the boat and has one of the most physically demanding roles onboard. 4 – Bowman: The bowman is often seen running back and forth on the trampoline as he pulls sails up and down. This super agile crew member is responsible for deploying and retrieving sails during the race. Ready to shimmy up the mast at a moments notice, he is fit, quick and fearless.

One of the most unique elements of the iShares Cup is that guests can hop onto a high-powered Extreme 40 catamaran to take part in a race as 'fifth man'. This is a fantastic opportunity for sponsors, journalists or VIPs to experience genuinely the racing, but getting desk-bound chief executives onto such extreme boats — and back on dry land — safely is a challenge in itself. The Extreme 40s are a unique challenge for support RIBs and their drivers, due to the cats’ sheer speed and agility, not to mention their electrifying acceleration. RIBs - or Rigid Inflatable Boats - evolved out of inshore lifeboats in the early 1970s. Besides the inherent stability of a large inflated 'collar' around the boat, the RNLI wanted the boats to be able to come alongside other vessels in distress without any risk off smashing, in the process, into either the casualty or the rescue vessel. The same raison d’être holds true for event support crews today. Major sponsors want to be able to showcase their investment to major clients and to lucky members of staff and he racing teams are quite keen that transfer vessels do not end up knocking chunks out of a hull when placing VIPs on board. Commercial RIB drivers are usually sailors too, and hold commercially-endorsed tickets — although ultimately there is no substitute for skill and experience. If chasing monohulls around can have its moments, particularly when they can sometimes out-pace the RIB, the Extreme 40s are a whole new challenge. Even the sailing teams often describe the cats as more or less out of control at all times! Unless the RIB drivers have their wits about them, they can end up with at least one hull onboard as an unscheduled passenger. The key is to use a trusted, professional operator — the iShares Cup has a long-standing partnership with Solent Rib Charters and so far their teams have managed not to drop any key sponsors overboard.

In the beginning... It all started in 2004 when the Extreme 40 was conceived on paper as a multihull class that would be exciting and challenging to race. The Extreme 40 designed to attract adrenaline-seeking sailors became a spectacular spectator sport. The first Extreme 40 were born in 2005 when five boats were built and raced at the stopover ports for the 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race. The Extreme 40 fleet also entertained the crowds at five stopover events in Sanxenxo, Rio de Janeiro, Baltimore, Portsmouth and Rotterdam. After 80 races, the overall winner of the seven-month-long series was determined by the final race of the event. Tommy Hilfiger, skippered by double Olympic silver medallist Randy Smyth, won the series; Team Basilica came second, Motorola-CHR third, Holmatro fourth and Volvo Ocean Race arrived in the fifth position.

A title sponsor is named... In January 2007, iShares, the world’s leader in Exchange Traded Funds, was named as Title Sponsor of the new series which became known as ‘The iShares Cup’. Rick Andrews, Head of iShares Marketing Europe, commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity for iShares; a new innovative platform that complements our brand values and offers exciting client entertainment experiences across Europe”.

OC Events is part of OC Group and is responsible for organising the new Extreme 40 Sailing Series. OC Events is the OC Group division responsible for managing and marketing professional sailing events including: The Artemis Transat (the world’s oldest solo transatlantic race from UK to North America, previously known as the OSTAR, next edition May 2008), and the Barcelona World Race (two crew for a non stop race around the world with professional sailors on board IMOCA Open 60 monohulls, starting on the 11th of November 2007 from Barcelona). Both events are part of the IMOCA Ocean Racing World Championships. OC Events also manages the iShares Cup Extreme 40 Sailing Series, a highly charged race series that focuses on top class b2b experiences, combined with top class competitions and great locations close to shore all around Europe. OC Events provides the expertise required to captivate the public, and meet the demands of the competitors, the sponsors and the media. 2007 iShares Cup Extreme 40 Sailing Series review... 2007 saw the Extreme 40s tackle the different challenges of racing on lake, sea and canal, in light, gusty and big breeze conditions. “You really can’t get closer inshore racing than we have seen at the iShares Cup, in particular Amsterdam” Rick Andrews, Head of Marketing, iShares Europe enthused. “The tight courses have given us some thrilling racing and fantastic client hospitality opportunities. We can’t wait to start again and look forward to growing the series.”

The iShares Cup Extreme 40 Sailing Series consist of the five premier European Race Events, hosted by France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the UK — providing a solid foundation for the Extreme 40 Class as it continues to grow.

The 2008 circuit for the iShares Cup Extreme 40 Sailing Series will continue to focus on high-octane, competitive closequarter racing accessible to the general public whilst providing an unforgettable VIP experience. If 2007 got pulses racing in the inaugural iShares Cup, 2008 seems set to create even more of a buzz both on and off the water. Visiting six countries and some great European cities with Olympic medallists on board, up against America’s Cup legends, the investments made by all stakeholders in 2007 seems to have paid off – 5 new boats are under construction to make a total fleet of 14 elements – and three America’s Cup teams now own Extreme 40s. The iShares Cup will not only provide competitive racing for the teams taking part in it, but it will also put in place a strong experiential business-to-business platform with top-class hospitality and hair-raising spectacle for all those watching from the shore. The iShares Cup will consist of five city-based regattas taking place from May to September 2008.

Each of the premier iShares Cup events will include three days of racing beginning with a session of informal, non-scoring races. During these sessions, the participating teams will take their all-important VIP and media guests out on the water for the ultimate racing experience. In the afternoon, teams will compete in up to five scoring races. Each race will be short (approximately 20 minutes long) and raced close to the shore giving spectators an intimate view of all the action. On the last day, the iShares Cup will also have a double-points race held as the final race. The five iShares Cup events will be scoring regattas with points counting towards a team’s overall event standing. The iShares Cup is a high scoring event; the team with the most points at the end of the series wins.

On-water judging will be implemented for the first time so that all penalties and disputes will be resolved on the water. No post-race protests; the first to past the post wins!

As far as the European circuit of the iShares Cup is concerned, the major development between 2008 and 2009 will be the introduction of more city-centre venues. In particular OC Events is exploring the possibility of bringing the iShares Cup into the heart of Paris and London as well as Amsterdam To complete this, OC Events will sign a Principal Partner to the event – to bring a lifestyle angle (music, fashion, drinks, etc.) and to increase the event’s impact and, overall, to broaden it’s appeal. OC Events will also be looking forward to work with teams based in each city before the event, in order to build a more effective presence – e.g. by installing boats in city centre public squares, roundabout, shopping malls, etc.

April 2009: Possible all-comers event [world championship in another name], 5-7 days duration, including a more 'classical' racing series: west coast USA – timing to fit in with timings for any additional boats competing in VOR series (between Qingdao and Boston) – aims to also help open up the USA market, and provide some early season highly competitive racing for everyone in a top sailing venue. May-September 2009: Extreme 40 Sailing Series Europe, the core premium product. The core countries remain with 5 or 6 full events of similar format to this year – UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy, with the possibility of a Spanish event. The first event will take place on the beginning of May. The final event will take place by the end of September. Arabia/Middle-East: one-off event in northern hemisphere winter at the end of 2009, leading to possible series in winter 2010/11. Asia/Australasia: one-off event in northern hemisphere winter at the end of 2009, leading to possible series in winter 2010/11

iShares, OC Events and Tornado Sports share a long-term vision - to develop the iShares Cup into a global circuit with 10-12 events per year. During the European winter 2007/8 iShares and OC Events took an Extreme 40 to Sydney and to San Francisco to determine whether these markets might be receptive to the concept of the iShares Cup. During these events local media, influencers and VIPs were invited onboard the race boat to experience the thrill and in both instances the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. To further this work we are planning to run at least one stand-alone event outside Europe during winter 2008/9 (separate to VOR series). As soon as the plans clear up we will be in touch with details.

Tornado Sports are currently negotiating with Volvo Events Management UK to run an Extreme 40 race series in five of the Volvo Ocean Race stopover ports (Alicante, Singapore, Qingdao, Boston, Stockholm). In the meantime iShares and OC Events are developing plans for the iShares Cup 2009 race calendar European series (plus stand-alone events outside Europe) to try to minimise or avoid clashes with the VOR circuit. It is quite likely however that the iShares Cup 2009 European Season will start mid May before the VOR series finishes.

The iShares Cup 2008 takes place over five regattas in Europe, at each of which racing takes place over three days - usually Friday to Sunday inclusive. During each of these days an average of 6 races will be run in the afternoons – depending on weather, tide conditions, etc. TYPICAL WEEK FOR AN ISHARES CUP REGATTA Monday / Tuesday Boats arrive at location (in 40ft containers), teams rig boats and launch them using cranes Wednesday Team training and team VIP hospitality Thursday Media day – celebrities and important persons invited to the event and media are taken sailing on Extreme 40s Friday, Saturday & Sunday PM Racing.
