The University of Milan has launched a call for application, based on qualifications and interviews, for admission to the Graduate School in Social, Economic and Political Sciences for the following Ph.D. Programmes: Ph.D. in Economics – Director Prof. Franco Donzelli ([email protected])

At least 11 students will be admitted to this Ph.D. programme, 6 of these with a scholarship. Ph.D. in Labour Studies – Director Prof. Ida Regalia ([email protected])

At least 6 students will be admitted to this Ph.D. programme, 3 of these with a scholarship. Ph.D. in Political Studies – Director Prof. Paolo Martelli ([email protected])

At least 6 students will be admitted to this Ph.D. programme, 3 of these with a scholarship. Ph.D. in Sociology – Director Prof. Antonio Chiesi ([email protected])

At least 8 students will be admitted to this Ph.D. programme, 4 of these with a scholarship. For the academic year 2007/2008 there are two selection phases. The first selection has been closed at the end of April and five scholarships have been assigned (3 by the Ph.D. in Economics and 2 by the Ph.D. in Sociology). In this second selection, there will be 12 scholarships, assigned as following: Ph.D. in Economics – 4 scholarships Ph.D. in Labour Studies – 3 scholarships Ph.D. in Political Studies – 3 scholarship Ph.D. in Sociology – 2 scholarships. Up to eight of these twelve scholarships can be designated to non EU applicants. This selection will offer also 16 positions without scholarship. Candidates that already applied in the first stage may re-apply for this second selection. The admission committee will be the same of the first selection for every Ph.D. programme.

1. Conditions for admission The call for application to the Graduate School Doctorates is open to Italian and foreign candidates who hold an academic qualification that has been declared to be equivalent to an Italian Laurea Quadriennale or Laurea Magistrale. In case their degree has not yet been declared equivalent to an Italian Laurea Quadriennale or Laurea Magistrale, candidates may apply to the Faculty committee of the Ph.D. programme of interest, for the declaration of equivalent value. The first phase of selection will be based on the evaluation of the following documents: -

a research project in English (max 2500 words)

two letters of reference (see Appendix B and C)

-

the applicant’s university career (useful examinations passed, graduation mark and final GPA - grade point average)

-

copy of the graduation dissertation including an English abstract

-

any publications, any professional experience and any other qualifications held by the applicant.

The second phase of selection will be based on interviews - either in English or in Italian. Selected participants must be fluent in written and spoken English. Fluency in English will be evaluated on the basis of an English course certificate (TOEFL or equivalent), if candidates hold one, and/or an interview. Application for admission The application form1 for admission to this second selection with the receipt of the payment requested below must arrive to the University of Milan (Università degli Studi di Milano, Segreterie Studenti - Ufficio Dottorati e Master, via Festa del Perdono, 7 - 20122 Milano, Italy), on pain of exclusion from the competition, no later than August 30th, 2007. In either case, the payment should be accompanied by the following explanatory sentence: "Enrolment fee for the application form - Ph.D. Programme in … (XXIII cycle)". This fee shall not be repayable under any circumstances.

Shall the envelope visibly cite on the external side the following sentence: “Academic Reference Form – Ph.D. Programme in… [specify the Ph.D. of interest]”.

Qualifications Qualifications may be presented in the form described above and, solely for Italian and EU Applicants in the form of a declaration made by the applicant on his/her own responsibility, in accordance with Italian Presidential Decree N° 445, dated 28 December 2000 (Appendix A), as well as in the form of the original or of an authenticated photocopy. The University of Milan is authorised to make formal control on the truthfulness and correspondence of the documentation presented by applicants. Academic publications may be produced in the form of simple copies that are declared to comply with the originals by means of a declaration (Appendix A). The same method can be used to produce copies of academic and service qualifications and documents issued or held by any public administration. Qualifications may be produced in Italian, English, French, German or Spanish.

4. Admission examinations Admission to the Ph.D. programmes is in two stages. In the first stage, the Examining Committee evaluates the qualifications for compliance with the criteria established by the Ph.D. Faculty Committee. Applicants who achieve an appraisal of not less than 18/30 are admitted to the examination. The examination comprises an interview, whose purpose is to ascertain the applicant’s degree of preparation, skills and aptitude for scientific research and personal motivation. The interview also aims to verify the applicant’s knowledge in the educational and academic areas specified for the Ph.D. and includes the applicant’s formal presentation of the research project (s)he proposes to conduct. The interview is only passed if the applicant achieves a mark of not less than 21/30. Should the members of the Committee fail to reach a consensus appraisal, each one shall attribute a mark of 1/n. 30 to the applicant for the interview, where n = the number of Committee members. The timetable will be decided by the commission in agreement with the applicant before the day of the interview, taking care of the difference of hours. 5

At the end of the examination, the Examining Committee shall compile a general classification of merit on the basis of the sum of the marks achieved by the applicants in the appraisal of their qualifications and in the interview. This general classification of merit shall be published on the notice-board of the Students’ Secretariat Division, in via Santa Sofia 9/1, on the Graduate School’s website www.graduateschool.unimi.it and on the University’s website http://www.unimi.it/studenti/10026.htm, within thirty (30) days of the date of the interviews. Applicants admitted to the courses shall lose their entitlement if they fail to make express acceptance within five (5) days of the date when the classifications are published. In such a case, the place shall be taken by first applicant in the classification who had not been admitted. Should an applicant be admitted in more than one classification, (s)he must exercise an option for just one Ph.D. programme.

5. Matriculation Candidates admitted to the doctorate course must enrol online using the SIFA – admission and classification service no later than the absolute deadline of five (5) days after the date when the result of the competition is communicated. The following material must be delivered to the Ph.D. and Masters office in the Students’ Secretariat, in the manner and by the deadlines indicated at the conclusion of the selection procedure: a passport-sized photograph, the original documentation relative to the applicant’s qualification if awarded abroad, a copy of the applicant’s residence permit in the case of a non-EU citizen and all other documents useful for appraising the applicant’s suitability for enrolment in the course and the assignment of a scholarship.
