Traditional Breton farmhouse ARCHITECTS: Jean-Charles CASTRIC – architecte D.P.L.G. 02

The site is a large meadow near an ancient hamlet and its chapel. The simple volume of the chestnut-sided house, its long façade oriented towards the sun, seems to float above the grass. This house, like most traditional farmhouses in Brittany, orients south-southeast, with the

southerly façade open to the meadow and the sun. Two substantial “bookends”, punctuated by strong horizontal window openings, frame a long wooden terrace that naturally extends the living room and bedroom spaces. The north façade on the opposite side is very different; it is closed and protected against the elements. The attention to orientation and thermal qualities results in a very energy-efficient building, heated by a single wood stove. In this project, wood is used both as wall structure and siding.
