In 1974, as part of the NAC’s Ballet series, the NAC Orchestra played Tchaikovsky’s “Bluebird” Pas de deux for the first time. Oliver Knussen led the Orchestra in their most recent interpretation of this work in 2001.

Tchaikovsky’s music has always been a favourite of mine for its incredible ability to tell a story or portray deep emotions. And as a former violinist myself, I can’t stop my fingers from air-playing many of the melodies Tchaikovsky wrote. I know that just as it has remained in my heart for years, our audience will walk away feeling musically enriched by this wonderful music.

The Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto has become a staple of the violin repertoire. It is played everywhere, sometimes © Gabrielle Revere
dubbed “overplayed” — in concerts, auditions, competitions and films alike — and yet it has never lost its ability to make its audience swoon. For me, its unique allure and beauty lies in the delicate balance between its sentimental romanticism and poetic elegance, symphonic grandiosity and complexity, against its folksong-like charm and simplicity, its nearly obsessive repetitiveness and insistence (especially in the last movement) versus the glory of its long, continuous melodic arches. I continue to find new meaning every time I take up this work again — the sign of a true masterwork, and the reason it is much beloved!
