COMMUNICATION WORKSHOPS Do you agree that effective communication is essential for success at work?

Training concept At TheatreWorks we specialize in bridging the gaps in communication by providing creative training workshops using interactive theatre techniques. This means participants are actively and productively involved in the whole training process. We help employees to explore a greater capacity to exchange ideas with others and promote better working relationships which contributes to a more dynamic working atmosphere. At TheatreWorks our approach to helping people communicate more effectively is to provide tools which can: • Promote participation • Enhance teamwork • Create initiatives • Build rapport • Develop plans and processes to achieve specific organisational goals A whole range of feelings can arise due to miscommunication, such as anger, stress, anxiety, fear, frustration and the feeling of failure or being undervalued. Every employee can benefit from speaking clearly, having their message understood and listening attentively.

What are theatre techniques? There is a wide range of theatre techniques which are transferable to everyday business situations such as giving a presentation, taking part in meetings or working together in a team. We use various techniques to improve overall impact and stimulate creativity. We will help you focus on: Positive Body language • Non-verbal communication • Gestures • Posture • Movements • Listening awareness • Eye contact • Breathing techniques Improvisation We introduce the notion of improvisation methodologies. By this we mean no script, no rehearsal; no one can predict what will happen. The beauty of improvisation is that it is spontaneous. This is a real life scenario. Candidates need to think on their feet and act out ‘scenes’. Improvisation works on collaboration, listening and awareness skills in particular and helps employees be more dynamic, creative and flexible.

Storytelling Traditionally, storytelling was used as a means of exchanging information between people. Today, it can be used as a legitimate communications tool to share organizational knowledge within a company. Our facilitators use storytelling as a way of inspiring participants to find a narrative form which is interesting and memorable to convey clear messages in an easy to understand format. This helps build relationships and encourages better understanding. Voice work The voice can betray our emotions, whether addressing a large group of people or speaking in a conversation with one other person. Often people worry how they sound and can become inhibited and less confident when they speak. This can greatly affect the ability to communicate and lessen the desired impact you want to make with your voice. TheatreWorks works with participants to practice voice projection and articulation. We also look at ways to reduce problems such as nervousness, shortness of breath or monotony of tone through breathing and posture.

Why use theatre techniques in business? There has long been an association between business and theatre: • Both take place in a public setting • Both require powerful communication skills • Both experiences can be extremely rewarding. Today’s business demands staff that can think creatively, react quickly and work effectively. Artsbased learning methods can help to instil and develop the critical skills needed to work in a competitive environment. No prior experience in acting, performing or improvisation is necessary. Our expert facilitators deliver simple, clear instructions on a range of effective exercises. Forum theatre The notion of Forum Theatre was founded by Augustus Boal, an innovative and influential theatre director, writer and politician. Boal experimented by changing the concept of conventional theatre, i.e. in which an audience passively observes the actors on stage, into unconventional theatre, i.e. in which an audience actively participates and becomes part of the scene. Spectators are invited to intervene physically to explore alternatives and to create new actions. TheatreWorks uses this underlying principle of Forum Theatre to involve participants in role plays to expose adverse situations in daily working life which impact dysfunctional working relationships including: • Poor communication • Lack of team spirit • Inadequate delegation • Insufficient listening on the part of managers

At any point during a role play a spectator may stop the scene and make suggestions on how to improve the situation, and even substitute someone in the scene. Through participation delegates are invited to explore multiple perspectives and act out positive change where necessary. It gives delegates the opportunity to try new approaches, consider alternative actions and improve a targeted skill set.

About Christine Cadet Christine’s background as a business owner, trainer and communications consultant has given her a unique set of skills to nurture people's potential - helping people to foster greater confidence in themselves, improve their credibility, win over audiences and boost their performance. Christine graduated in 1992 in Modern Languages and Political Studies from the University of Northumbria, England before moving to Germany where she worked as an English language trainer, and then moved into marketing when she joined PricewaterhouseCoopers Financial Advisory Services as Marketing Executive. In 1999 Christine transferred to PricewaterhouseCoopers London, where she put her German and marketing skills to good use in the EMT (Entertainment, Media and Technology) team for the Financial Advisory Services arm. With the dot.com crash came redundancy in March 2000, and Christine seized the opportunity to join Citigate Technology, part of the Citigate Dewe Rogerson global PR group, as Senior PR Consultant handling accounts for Hitachi Europe Ltd and Applied Materials Inc. A move to Paris in 2002 for personal reasons saw Christine re-enter the training market as an English language business trainer for ICB Europe. This role provided Christine with the skills and knowledge she needed in creating, developing and delivering training programmes. Whilst in Paris Christine became involved in several networking groups and pursued her interests in theatre, coaching and training. Combining her enthusiasm for the theatre and training, in May 2007 Christine created the training company, TheatreWorks, which is made up of a network of talented people who deliver tailor-made workshops on behalf of TheatreWorks. Recognizing that actors have invaluable skills, motivation and vision, she aims to transfer these talents to the corporate world to help employees not only communicate better, but to expand their self-confidence and to succeed in their working life. Her entrepreneurial sprit and desire to add real long-term value are the drivers which motivate and inspire Christine to ensure that TheatreWorks delivers the best service possible.
