The Wind That Shakes The Barley : Scene Description The scene takes place in an Irish parish in the 1920s. Villagers are arrested by british soldiers in a farm near the woods. The Irish teenagers refuse to obey the orders. At that time, there was a political conflict between the Irish and the British : a law, called "Defense of the Realm Act" forbade people to have public meeting. Some teenagers played hurley in the morning so they were arrested by British soldiers who raided the farm. Then they were asked to give their identity and address but one of them refused to give his name in English to the british officer. Then, the teenager kicked the officer on the face.So he took him to the barn and two soldiers tortured and killed him /beat him to death. He beat him for refusing to comply with the orders. Indeed, he refused to obey him and submit to the officer. In the scene, one of the Irish teenagers is rebellious as he will not follow the orders. Some of them are frigtened and impressed by the British brutality. On the other hand, the British soldiers are cruel merciless, and ruthless when they perpetrate this cold-blooded murder.
