RKU N D anti-plagiarism services Urkund : One of the mostU capable academic The JISC Plagiarism Advisory is the official promotor of Turnitin Services in the UK. For reasons that partly go to its own interests, “the JISC Plagiarism Advisory Service commissioned the NCC Group to review the top 11 academic plagiarism detection solutions available in the UK in Oct 2006. From this long list the review produced a detailed study of 5 products suitable for the JISC community (Higher and Further Education in the UK)“1. A batch of detection tests against some documents have been done and an exhaustive questionnaire has been sent to each organisation. “A graphical summary differentiating results and a more detailed report will follow once confidential content has been cleared” 1. This update of September 2007 now includes the Urkund new version and a graphical summary (see graph below). 1 (source: JISC Review on NCC Report) 80% 70%

VLE/LMS Integration (Virtual Learning Environment)

”NCC Group arranged an Academic Panel to review the short list and a questionnaire that was sent out to all organisations involved in the survey. Unfortunately it has proven impossible contact with all the selected service providers and only 5 completed questionnaires have been returned”1. Evaluation of these questionnaires established Turnitin and Urkund as the most capable service providers. “The plagiarism detection services provided by Urkund are on a par with Turnitin in that material is compared to Internet sources, previously submitted student material and periodicals“2. However it exists a great difference between both systems.

Urkund and Turnitin are independent and not tied to any one VLE. Both integrates with all the major VLEs including open source platforms. This means the Urkund and Turnitin databases are not restricted to contributions from a single VLE. Urkund has been integrated with Fronter (Scandinavia), MOSS - MS sharepoint server (Scandinavia), APPUI (ESC Toulouse - FR), BlackBoard (Edhec - FR, Universities in NL), Moodle, Ping Pong, Dokeos and FirstClass.

Urkund - The only e-mail based service Urkund offers an unique and helpful automatised submission procedure. “Urkund is a primarily e-mail based service rather than online as with others systems”2 such as Turnitin with its conventional web interface. “Students are provided with their lecturer’s e-mail address at Urkund to which they submit their work. Submitted papers are then checked against Internet sources, others papers and periodicals overnight and an e-mail is sent to the lecturers normal e-mail address containing a link to submitted paper and the plagiarism report or the lecturers can access the reports via a web interface. It is very simple yet very effective with minimal learning and effort required. The lecturer can create a folder structure for different courses in order to organise automatically submissions. He can also associate submission deadlines for each courses”2. This e-mail submission feature is a real asset for schools that want to prevent academic plagiarism by generalising and systematisating the detection to any document and involving students in the submission procedure.

Databases search Urkund, subsidiary of PrioInfo AB - a major Database Company - has a proactive attitude by identifying and concreting cooperations and alliances with publishers and specific databases providers in UK market and all markets where it operates (ProQuest, DIVA ...) and the product ”Factiva” is expected soon. On local markets, in particular in France, Urkund is actively developping its partnership (Coming soon with ”Alternatives Economiques”, ”Les techniques de l’Ingénieur”).

New version of Urkund For the second release of the NCC survey, Urkund provided an access to its latest Plagiarism detection service, at the moment in Beta testing. This new version was officially released later on October 26th, 2007. It shown NCC a performance yet increased in the result of the analysis which now displays a completely new layout. Urkund has now a full compatibility with MS Word 2007 (.docx) and OpenOffice formats (.odt and .sxw). Others great and usefull features will be added in the coming months as a new administration tool from schools. Sources: 1 2
