We have two new residents in Piney. Anders Rivers Oswald was born to Kevin and Carrie Dokken on Jan. 3 at the Roseau Area Hospital weighing in at 6 lbs 5 oz. He is a delightful brother for Scarlet and a first grandson for Susan and Ken Dokken of Vassar. Maternal grandfather is John Friesen of Piney. Then on Jan. 13, Kaitlin and Lucas Wipf of Pineland Colony welcomed their first born, a daughter, Hailey Rachel, who tipped the scale at 7 lbs 4 oz and was also born at the Roseau Hospital. Proud grandparents for the first time are Joseph and Sandra Gross, Gary and Betsy Wipf, while great-grandparents are Jacob and Tillie Gross and Rachel Gross, all from Pineland. Wishing you all the best with your babies.
Retiring
A retirement party was held at the Piney Community Centre for Jean Gushulak who will be retiring from the Department of Forestry (Sprague office) at the end of the month. Many people turned out to wish Jean well in her retirement. Dale and I wish you much contentment in whatever you choose to do in the years to come.

A friendly reminder that this weekend is Piney’s annual snowmobile derby starting with registration at the Piney Community Hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Breakfast will be served at the same time. There will be a 50/50 raffle and rainbow auction. There is no designated trail, so feel free to enjoy the countryside as you ride along. Winners will be announced after 1 p.m.
Cribbage/bingo
This coming Friday night will be the bi-weekly cribbage tournament in the Over 40 Clubroom starting at 7 p.m. There were no big winners at bingo this last Friday night, so all the jackpots are intact. The next bingo will be on Friday, Jan. 25 with the jackpot at 58 numbers or less to win the $500. The Lucky 7 will be over $6,400. It’s time to take that trip to Piney to see if you’ll be the lucky recipient of one of the pots.

Zabava
The Sarto Polevnyi Dance Club will be hosting a Zabava fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Sarto Hall. Tickets are $15 each. Included in the price of tickets is entertainment by the Prairie Fire band.
