M3A3 – Yunnan Highway Museum, Lujiangba Station, Longyang district, Baoshan (China) This wreckage of a M3A3 Stuart was discovered in a ditch deep in the jungle less than 100 kilometers from Myitkyina city in north Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. It was one of 145 (?) M3A3 Stuart tanks used by the Joint Chinese-American 1st Provisional Tank Group. The tank was probably badly damaged in the spring or summer of 1944, during the allied offensive against the Japanese in northern Burma. Sometime before 2008, the wreckage was dug out and shipped to Myitkyina. Due to poor road condition, it had to be cut into pieces and carried out of the jungle on horseback. In January 2008, the wreckage (still in pieces) was sold and shipped to the Chinese province of Yunnan. The tank was sent to an auto body shop in Baoshan City of Yunnan Province, where it was welded back together and “restored”. All the suspension system and running gear are not original, and was taken from a scraped Chinese made Dongfanghong tractor. The original suspension and many other parts were either saved and reused by combat units in 1944 or salvaged by locals after the war. The rear section of the hull is missing. It was probably blown off during combat or cut off to remove the engine. The hull was not restored to its original length, it is at least 20% shorter than it used to be (Ye Meng)
