Churchill Mk III* – Nigel Montgomery Collection (UK) – running condition This tank had been converted from a gun tank to an AVRE, and had applique armour fitted not only to the hull, but also to the turret front and sides. It was rescued from a range in relatively poor condition. The aim of the restoration was to return the tank to a Churchill Tank Mk III* with a 75mm gun. The Applique armour has been retained, albeit with the AVRE fittings removed (source : http://www.churchilltank.com/Home_Page/MK_III.html). As of Jan. 2014, the owner has found that the tank was T31831, which was part of a contract placed in late 1940 with Birmingham Railway Carriage Company. He’s looking for any pic showing the tank in wartime service

Churchill Mk IV AVRE – Graye-sur-Mer (France) This Churchill AVRE was lost during the landing on Juno Beach on 6 June 1944. It slipped in a crater filled with water when trying to put a faggot in it. A bridge element was placed on the roof of the tank, and gradually the crater was filled and later covered with concrete. The tank was found in November 1976, buried under the sand and recovered, at the crossing of the Arromanches road and Avenue du Général de Gaulle (100 meters far from its current location). It was then restored by the French army workshops in Caen and unveiled as a memorial on 15 October 1977. Information from Le Churchill AVRE de Graye-sur-Mer

Churchill Mk II hull – Springhead Hill, Storrington (UK) "It was during the training leading up to the Dieppe raid that 'A' Squadron, 14th Canadian Army Tank Battalion (Calgary Regt.), suffered what was then unceremoniously termed a 'dead-head'. This was the serious breakdown of a tank, and it is believed that due to the impending Dieppe raid and the gradual re-supply with Mark IIIs, this 'dead-head' was deemed as unsuitable for repair and withdrawn from service. It was then handed over to the infantry units of the 2nd Canadian Army Division and taken by them to the infantry training grounds above Storrington. Here the tank was used as a range target being fired upon by PIAT anti-tank weapons, amongst others, and when the troops pulled out after the war, was left sitting on the Downs. After the war, a member of the range clearing teams, who now lives in Storrington, remembers that to remove the tank it was simply rolled over into a bomb crater and buried. On 20 November 1993, the tank was recovered by the R.E.M.E. having been unearthed over the previous years by a number of hardy enthusiasts. Once rolled out of its grave it was placed on the edge of the field where it remains to this day." (Glen Carter). The turret has been used to aid restoration of another Churchill (Michael Fairbrother)
