Office de Tourisme de Mâcon – 1, place Saint-Pierre – 71000 Mâcon – Guide Groupes 2006

Mâcon welcomes you to his past Mâcon, town of history This small Gallo-Roman town, named Matisco, was evangelised in the third century. It was promoted to the rank of Cathedral town (bishopric) in the 6th century after some of Saint Vincent's relics were given to the town. It used to be an administrative town, part of a powerful county sold to Saint Louis in 1239 (King Louis IX), then given to the Duke of Burgundy in 1435 and later on handed back to the French Crown by Louis XI after the death of Charles "the reckless". The town suffered a lot during the Wars of Religion and the Revolution destroyed his bishopric. Mâcon is endowed with monuments of diversified and imposing architecture. The Wooden House, adorned with griming sculptures (15th century), a lot of townhouses like Montrevel (actually the town hall) which was typical of the Age of Enlightenment, the Saint Laurent Bridge and its recess sheltering a statuette of Saint Nicolas, patron saint of barges; Hotel Dieu Hospital designed by Soufflot, the Charity (also constructed by Soufflot) and its barrel for newly-born abandoned babies, old Saint Vincent church.

Mâcon, Lamartine's birthplace

Mâcon has much evidence of the life of this famous man, who was both a poet and a statesman, such as the Church of Saint Vincent, where he was baptized (built in the place of St Peter Church) and in th which his funeral took place (on 4 march 1869); Ozenay House, bought by his father in 1804; his family house in Rue de Beauderon de Senecé; the Lamartine's Museum (Senecé House) in rue Sigorgne containing a collection of documents and information concerning his life.

Mâcon, capital of southern Burgundy

We invite you to the "Maison des Vins" to discover the mythical and fascinating world of the Burgundy wines. During a tasting, a specialist will help you to discover the attractive "terroirs" of Burgundy and the tastes which make its reputation. Thanks to a clear language and easy documentation, Burgundy won't have any more secrets for you.

Guided tours of the town centre You can visit Mâcon with local guides/interpreters of the Tourist Office who will help you to discover the different aspects of the city. There are outside visits, walking tours, with not only cultural, but equally amusing commentaries.

Length of the visit: 1h30 Tours in French, English, German and Italian (other languages on request)… Price: 94 € per group (40 persons maximum).

Cluny Abbey

Spiritual, political and artistic capital in the Middle Ages, the Cluny Abbey and its medieval town enjoyed exceptional renown and influence throughout the centuries. The Benedictine Cluny Abbey, founded in 910 was dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. In 1088, under the abbot St Hughes an unbelievable construction was undertaken. Of this great building, there is only remaining the arm of the transept, surmounted by the "holy water" bell tower. Numerous important remnants to be found in the Farinier Museum testify that the ecclesiastical authorities' influence spread over the architecture and church artistic sculpture in the twelfth century in Burgundy and whole Western Europe. Novelty 2005: realised by the engineers of the Image Institute of the ENSAM, Maior Ecclesia is a film which is based on the archaeological last researches to make discover to everyone the famous abbey in the time of its splendour. The Abbey church of Tournus has remained the unchallenged achievement of "early Romanesque art". The construction took place between the beginning of the 11th century and the middle of the 12th century. Marvellously preserved, the Abbey dominates the town of Tournus, with its alleyways, the inside squares and many residences. The construction took place between the beginning of the 11th century and the middle of the 12th century. It also houses one of the richest apothecaries still existing to date. 4 courses lunch, including drinks (¼ of wine & coffee). Guided tour of the Brancion Village: you will arrive at the arched door which is the single access to the castle and the village surrounded of steep ravines. Then you’ll find yourself in a full medieval setting, with the castle, market halls, old houses and the church.
