Suggested Installation Instructions For Low Fuel Warning System On Aircraft Submitted by Harry Zeisloft, EAA Director The Low Fuel Warning System (GM Part No. 1596409) is designed to operate one 2 candle power indicator lamp. Switch actuation is permanently set at the factory to actuate between 1/16 and 1/4 tank. This switch point is not user adjustable. The 1596409 electronic Low Fuel Warning System is the only low fuel warning system that is compatible with GM's old style sliding coil gage. Other low fuel warning systems which appear similar are not suitable for use because they will cause gross errors in the indicated fuel quantities. Incorporated on the electronic package is a pre-heat circuit which pre-heats the indicator lamp. This may cause a slight red glow of the indicator lamp filament when the unit is off. This is normal and should not be a cause of concern. System installation should not be attempted in older aircraft where 6 V. automotive gages were adapted for aircraft use by means of a dropping resistor. Low signal levels available will cause the switch to actuate at 1/4 to 1/2 tank. After installation, the users should acquaint themselvers with the fuel quantity available after switch actuation in their particular installation and on the particular gaged tank. There will be some differences due to different senders and different tank configurations. Package will snap into a standard indicator hole. Check for available locations prior to purchasing holder for external lamp. To check system wiring, ground green wire at the gage; gage will show empty and warning lamp will be on. Switch point to turn on light may be too high (V* to V6 full) if gage is old 6 volt type (which can be identified by a resistor mounted on the gage terminals).
