SKU 10478 Battenberg Lace Place Mat Instructions In order to create the Battenberg Lace Place Mat featured on our site you will need: 1. Our Freestanding Battenberg Lace Place Mat: SKU 10478 Battenberg Lace Edging Set 2. Water-soluble stabilizer suitable for freestanding lace (we prefer Vilene) 3. Suitable machine embroidery thread: We find that polyester thread is especially suitable for these designs. In order to have the stitched out embroidery look the same on both sides, we would recommend that you use the same upper thread and bobbin thread. 4. Suitable fabric of your choice (we have used linen) for the Place Mat. Since some fabrics tend to shrink, you may want to dip the fabric in water for 2 hours before using it and then dry and iron it. Step by step instructions 1. Hoop the water-soluble stabilizer. Depending on the type of stabilizer you are using, you have to hoop from a minimum of 2 and up to 4 layers. Make sure it is hooped very tight and stays that way during the stitching out. We would recommend that you use the smallest possible hoop. It is better to stitch out 1 design at a time. Trying to save time by stitching 2 or more design in a single hoop may in fact result in delays, as you may have to restitch some designs due to stabilizer deformation during the stitching.

2. Stitch out the freestanding lace design. To create the Battenberg Lace Place Mat featured on our site, we stitched out the Battenberg Lace Corner - 4 times, Battenberg Lace Border #2 – 4 times and Battenberg Lace Border #3 – 2 times. 3. Cut away the excess stabilizer and place the freestanding lace in water until the stabilizer is completely dissolved (subject to the stabilizer used it may take up to 5 hours or more). Take the lace pieces out of the water and let them dry. 4. Arrange the components as shown below and connect them to each other with manual

stitches from the back side using the same thread you used to stitch out the designs.

5. Place the connected freestanding lace border and center pieces face up on top of the fabric. You can attach the lace to the fabric with pins or with temporary manual stitches.

6. Stitch the freestanding lace to the fabric using machine zigzag stitch – we used a 2.5 mm stitch with a density of 0.5 mm. When you are done stitching the freestanding lace and the fabric together:

7. Cut away the excess fabric and iron the Place Mat
