Simulating the propagation of smouldering fires in peatlands

Smouldering is a slow, low temperature flameless form of combustion that is poorly understood. Smouldering can occur in the soil when sufficient organic matter is present, and has been responsible for some high profile wildfires in the peatlands of Indonesia, Russia and Canada. The project would complement our group's experimental study of smouldering fire by developing a thermodynamic model of smouldering, and fitting this model to our data. Our group has already developed heuristic spatial SIR epidemic models of smouldering, and the project would hopefully compare the performance of the different modelling approaches. The project would involve computational programming, working on a computing cluster, some thermodynamic theory and some statistical methodology for fitting these models to data.
