Secteur tertiaire différencié et qualification de la main d'œuvre : un modèle d'économie géographique tri-sectoriel

Abstract Usually, theories of international economy, among which economic geography, assimilate services to nonexchangeable goods, explaining their exclusion from the analysis of trade and location. However, This reasoning omits the increase of the exchange of services and their diverse character. Inside a formal model of economic geography, we study the interactions between a traditional sector (local and homogeneous goods and services) and two differentiated sectors connected by forward and backward linkages (business services on one hand and manufactured goods on the other hand). Besides, we distinguish between skilled and unskilled workers and study the effects of a progressive integration on the distribution of the activities. Our results suggest that the situation inside the service sector influences the industrial location in a dominating way and establishes de facto an essential element of the economic development during integration. The application in the enlargement of the PECO indicates that the growth of industrial sector is a necessary but insufficient condition in the catching-up of these countries and should be associated with a growing attraction offered to the business services and to technological services in particular.
