Ce mal, trange, est aussi rpandu que tabou. Rwanda, Bosnie, Irak, Algrie, Vietnam, Liban... De partout, des hommes reviennent briss. Depuis ce jour o ils ont rencontr la mort, dans la gueule d'un fusil, le regard d'un ennemi ou les yeux d'un ami. A Bagdad, mon htel a reu un obus. J'ai vu un confrre couch sur la moquette. A la place du ventre, il y avait une tache blanche et nacre. Alors j'ai commenc une enqute qui m'a men dans plusieurs pays. J'ai interrog les combattants et les psychiatres, fouill les livres, la peinture et les films, l'ethnologie et la mythologie. Une chose est sre: si on n'affronte pas la douleur de la guerre, elle nous tue. Il faut plonger en nous-mmes et se reconstruire pour trouver la gurison. Oui, on peut en mourir, survivre et revivre. Et ce mal ne nous parle que de vie et d'humanit. Ceci est ma plus grande enqute.
