ROLAND DECUYPERE studied mechanical engineering at the polytechnic faculty of the Royal Military Academy (RMA). He graduated from the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) in 1970. In 1973 he obtained his PhD from the University of Ghent. Since 1985 until his retirement (30 June 2005) he was a full professor at the RMA, and was appointed as the Dean of the RMA Professors in November 2002. He is still a Visiting Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels and at the ERASMUS Hogeschool, Brussels. His teaching and research activities are dealing with turbomachines, aircraft performance and aircraft stability & control. Since 2004 he is the Chairman of the Applied Vehicle Technology (AVT) Panel of the Research & Technology Organization of NATO (RTO). He is also a member of several NATO technical teams dealing with UAVs Roland Decuypere is the author of a large number of papers and the organizer of numerous conferences and courses on the subject of UAVs. In 1998 he created the UAV-center at the RMA and is the initiator and animator of the Belgian UAV-network. In May 2002 he was appointed as the president of the Aerospace Commission of the Flemish Engineering Society Secretary of the Belgian National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts (since Nov 2000) Permanent member of the Jury for the «International University Contest of Mini & Micro drones» DGA/ONERA; MoD, France, 2002-2006
