Les jeux sont faits, il n’en reste plus que deux. La longue saison de la Ligue canadienne de hockey prendra fin avec un point d’exclamation dimanche soir au Colisée Pepsi de Québec. Les champions de la Ligue de hockey de l’Ouest, les Rockets de Kelowna (2-2), et les champions de la Ligue de hockey de l’Ontario, les Generals d’Oshawa (3-0), se disputeront la grande finale de la 97e édition de la Coupe Memorial MasterCard.

Les deux entraîneurs-chefs ont joué la carte sentimentale. « Je suis un ancien de l’Avalanche, donc presque un ancien Nordiques, et je suis le dernier gars ici à avoir joué avec Patrick Roy. Ça devrait peser dans la balance », affirme le pilote des Generals DJ Smith. « J’espère qu’ils savent que je parle français. Peut-être que je devrais demander à ma femme de m’envoyer mon vieux chandail des Nordiques ! » blague pour sa part Dan Lambert, qui a effectivement évolué à Québec de 1990 à 1992.

Si les Rockets l’emportent, il s’agira de la deuxième année de suite que la Ligue de hockey de l’Ouest soulève la Coupe Memorial, après les Oil Kings d’Edmonton en 2014. Les Generals deviendraient pour leur part la première formation de la Ligue de hockey de l’Ontario à mériter les grands honneurs depuis les deux victoires consécutives des Spitfires de Windsor en 2009 et 2010.
