What’s new in version 3.7.0.4 Service Pack 2

1. New Features 1. 1 Time Navigator for Oracle using Recovery Manager RMAN Proxy Copy is now supported by Time Navigator. RMAN Proxy Copy is an extension of the RMAN API allowing a backup software to use Point in Time mechanisms to perform non-disruptive Oracle database backups.

☞ For more information, see the Appendix of the Time Navigator for Oracle using Recovery Manager part of the Time Navigator for Oracle manual.

1. 2 Time Navigator for DB2 Graphical Mode Time Navigator for DB2 Graphical Mode now supports the backup and restore of DB2 aliases. Aliases are now displayed in the User Interface file tree and can be handled as any other DB2 meta-objects.

1. 3 Time Navigator for IBM iSeries Time Navigator now supports the backup and restore of IBM iSeries hosts via a new module Time Navigator for IBM iSeries which uses the NDMP protocol.

☞ See the new Time Navigator for IBM iSeries manual for more information. 1. 4 EMC Centera Time Navigator can now back up or archive data on the EMC Centera, a disk-based Content Addressed Storage (CAS) mainly aiming at archiving fixed contents.

☞ See the Appendix of the Time Navigator User’s Guide for more information.

Time Navigator Release Notes

2. New Behavior 2. 1 Time Navigator for Mac OS X Setup M24828 The Mac OS X agent setup can now be launched from an icon on the delivery CD-ROM.

2. 2 Storage Node Writing Format M23866 The tar format is now supported in LAN free mode.

2. 3 Operator Requests M24680 An operator request is now issued when a cartridge needed for a reading session (restore, duplication, ...) is located in a disabled slot.

2. 4 New parameters to launch the Web Restore Interface The parameter ?filluser=username allows to pre-select the username. The parameter ?matchplatform=regexp allows to use regular expressions to filter the name of the platforms appearing in the Restore Destination field.

2. 5 Applications FL219

Should an incident occur during the backup of a log file, Time Navigator no longer backs up all the databases again. Only the database containing the log file involved is backed up again. This new behavior applies to the MS-Exchange, MS-SQL Server, DB2 and Sybase applications.

2. 6 Oracle Application M22815 When older archive logs are purged according to the value of the TINA_ORA_LOG_DEST_MAX variable, all the mirror logs specified via the log_archive_dest_n parameters are now also purged.

Version 3.7.0.4 SP2

2. 7 Sybase Application M22586 The "select into", "parallel sort", "fast bulk copy" Sybase operations allowed by the select into/bulk copy/pllsort Sybase option are unlogged. As a consequence, by default, Time Navigator performs only full backups if this option is enabled, even though an incremental backup is planned. A new environment variable, TINA_ASE_DUMP_TR_SIBC, is now available. It allows to perform an incremental backup even though the select into/bulk copy/pllsort Sybase option is enabled. However, if any of the "select into", "parallel sort", "fast bulk copy" unlogged operations has been actually used, a full backup will be performed.

3. Compatibility Issues Time Navigator 3.7.0.4 does not support NDMP V4 for cartridge and job duplication operations. Only NDMP V3 is supported.

2. New Features 2. 1 Time Navigator Reporter Time Navigator Reporter is a storage management reporting tool designed to simplify the task of reporting on an organization’s Time Navigator activities. This version of Time Navigator Reporter is a stand-alone product that can be used in a Time Navigator 3.6 or 3.7 environment and supports Windows, Linux and Solaris platforms.

2. 2 Linux Time Navigator now supports the backup and restore of ACLs on Linux RedHat 3.0.

2. 3 Time Navigator Agent for Mac OS X Time Navigator now supports the backup and restore of Mac OS X clients.

2. 4 Unix Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM)

PAM allows the integration of various authentication technologies (for instance UNIX, Kerberos, RSA ...) into system entry applications such as Time Navigator, without modifying the applications. To enable PAM for Time Navigator, do the following: 1.

Create an atempo file in etc/pam.d and configure it using the appropriate syntax.

For details on the PAM syntax, use the man pam command or read your operating system documentation.

2.

Set the "Enable Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM)" tunable (enable_pam_authentication) to yes to enable the feature.

For details on tunables, see the Time Navigator Tunables guide.

34 Time Navigator Release Notes

2. 1 Time Navigator for SQL Server It is now possible to restore an SQL Server database with a name different from the original name. The new name is specified via the TINA_SQL_DB_DEST environment variable. If this variable is set, the TINA_SQL_MOVE_DATE_TO variable specifying the absolute path of the destination directory becomes mandatory.

2. 2 Virtual Library System Application The Virtual Library System Application allowing to export data from disk to tape has been improved: Duplication/Removal Parameters

Some duplication/removal parameters have been added: ■

You can now run several duplication jobs simultaneously, provided that the physical library contains several drives. You can now set a deadline after which no duplication can be started. This prevents duplication jobs to overlap with some other scheduled operations.

Automatic Cartridge Closing

The Virtual Library System Application now allows to close cartridges automatically according to various criteria that you specify. The criteria are the cartridge filling rate and the last backup date. Metapool Priority

If there are not enough drives in the library to perform parallel duplications of all your metapools, you can now sort the metapools in order of priority. Monitoring Window

The monitoring window is now organized in fields and columns. It provides two types of information: ■

Global information on the Virtual Library System.

Detailed information on each meta-pool.

This monitoring report can be exported to a file on your disk.

3. New Behavior 3. 1 Administration M20257 When a job is stopped on error, it remains in the Active job list after all automatic retries are exhausted, until you manually abort or restart it. If you abort it, the job moves to the Historic list and its status becomes "Aborted on error." M21725 It is now possible to filter historic jobs according to their status.

3. 2 Backup M21013 It is now possible to back up files up to 8 GB in the tar format and to restore them properly. For files larger than 8 GB, use one of the other backup formats available (cpio, TiNa, sidf ...). M22205 The Continue Backup if one of the Multiple Writing Sessions Fails backup option now ensures that a backup job starts even if one of the writing sessions composing the job cannot be started. For instance, if one of the drives fails before the backup is triggered, only one of the sessions fails. The other sessions run normally.

3. 3 Restore Parameters FL210 ■

Two new restore parameters have been added: The Restore Data and Attributes Including Attributes of Existing Directories option allows to restore all data and all attributes, even the attributes of directories that already exist in the Present time file tree. The option Restore Object Data and Attributes has been renamed into Restore Data and Attributes Except Attributes of Existing Directories. The Rename Restored File adds a suffix to the name of the restored file (ex: file.doc is renamed into file.doc_rest1). Files already present on disk keep their original names.

36 Time Navigator Release Notes

3. 4 Catalog Application ■

The "Catalog Parameters and Events" directory has been renamed to "Configuration" and now allows to back up the whole contents of the Conf and Adm directories of the Time Navigator installation folder. As a result, the TINA_SDB_SAVE_EVENTS environment variable has been removed. To indicate whether or not to back up the events file, you may use a backup class on the Adm directory with an exclusion filter. Restoring these directories creates a Conf.restored and Adm.restored directories. The location of the boot directory is now forced to: $TINA_HOME/Data./Boot. As a result, the TINA_SDB_BOOT_PATH environment variable has been removed.

3. 5 List Application M21144 The MOUNT keyword has been added to the List application. It allows to back up and restore file systems with the List application.

3. 6 Web Restore FL196

The Web restore interface nows allows to perform cross-restore and restore from an archive folder.

3. 7 Oracle Application M20780 The send channel command can now be used to send system commands to Time Navigator via RMAN. The syntax is as follows: send channel

The first character in the command field is interpreted by Time Navigator and can take one the following values: ■

"#" The command field is interpreted as a string to be logged in the Oracle trace files and the Time Navigator Events. "?" The command field is interpreted as a system command to be run with a return code control. If the return code is different from 0, the RMAN script exits on error. "!" The command field is interpreted as a system command to be run without a return code control.

3. 8 Filesystem Application M19151 A new environment variable is created: TINA_FS_DEST_DIR. This variable specifies the access path of a directory on the destination host file system to be used as the root directory of the file tree for restore. The Filesystem application now contains an Information meta-directory. This directory contains useful system and parameter information.

3. 9 MS-Exchange Application M20768 Namesakes are no longer allowed in the User Interface file tree. The objects representing mailboxes in the file tree are now named as follows: First_Name Surname (logon). For example, the mailbox of user John Smith is now John Smith (jsmith).

See “Time Navigator for MS-Exchange”, page 32 to restore instances backed up with a prior version of Time Navigator.

3. 10 Lotus Domino Application M20150 Active transaction logs are now backed up in V5 mode from Lotus Notes version 5.0.4 on. M20224 The critical files which are not physically located on the disk are no longer displayed in the file tree of the User Interface (tina). A warning event message replaces the red icon that was located on the left of these files. M20413/M20471 Inactive transaction logs are now purged automatically when you use the TINA_LNT_MAX_LOG environment variable. M20543 Two new environment variables: TINA_LNT_SKIP_EXIST_DATABASE: allows to skip existing databases on restore. TINA_LNT_RESTORE_WITHOUT_RECOVER: allows to restore the database without

recovery. M21291 Two new environment variables: TINA_LNT_BACKUP_LOGS_ON_FULL: allows to back up transaction logs during full

backups. The variable is used only when the Domino server is in Transactional Logging Archive mode. TINA_LNT_RESTORE_POINT_IN_TIME: allows to choose a specific date (rather than a backup session date) to perform a database restore.

38 Time Navigator Release Notes

☞ For more details on these environment variables, see the Time Navigator for Lotus Domino guide. M21291 By default, transaction logs are now always backed up during a full backup in Transactional Logging Archive mode (see TINA_LNT_BACKUP_LOGS_ON_FULL variable). Databases are also backed up during an incremental backup in Transactional Logging Archive mode if one of the following conditions applies: ■

A new database has been created and was never backed up before.

The database DBIID (DBID and LogID) has changed since the last backup.

The logging mode has switched from "Non-Transactionnal" to "Transactionnal".

Modifications in the file tree of the Time Navigator User interface: ■

Warning

Two metadirectories have been renamed in order to implement new features and change the backup order of these metadirectories: Backup Session Dates becomes Session Dates. Log Files becomes Transaction Log Files.

If backup classes were previously defined on the renamed metadirectories, it is necessary to adjust the class definition.

Files from the Transaction Log Files metadirectory are no longer displayed with their full pathname in the Time Navigator file tree. The pathname remains available via the Tree-Selection-Instances menu.

3. 11 Virtual Library System M21591 It is now possible to delete a Virtual Library System from the Administration interface of a remote platform, in cases where the platform hosting the Virtual Library System is unreachable. However, the drives will not be automatically deleted, you must delete them manually.

48 Time Navigator Release Notes

2. 3 Backup to Disk with Time Navigator Virtual Library System In addition to backup to tape, Atempo now also offers a disk-based backup functionality, Time Navigator Virtual Library System (VLS), that uses external disks rather than

cartridges as the backup target. Time Navigator Virtual Library System emulates traditional tape library behavior and can be managed via the Time Navigator Library Management Interface (tina_library). The virtual cartridges are handled as standard cartridges would be. The data backed up on disk can later be exported to a tape library on a scheduled basis for longer storage via the Time Navigator Virtual Library Application. If you are using stand alone Disk Drives created with an earlier version of Time Navigator 3.7, you can convert them into a Virtual Library System.

☞ For details, see “From stand alone Disk Drives to Virtual Library System”, page 45. 2. 4 Time Navigator for MS-Exchange 2003 Time Navigator for MS-Exchange 2003 backs up and restores MS-Exchange 2003 databases and mailboxes. It uses the Recovery Storage Group feature that allows you to restore MS-Exchange mailbox databases on the production server in a location different from the original one. This feature can be used to recover or extract lost mailboxes while the original database remains available to all users.

2. 5 Time Navigator for Sybase Graphical Mode Atempo developed a graphical module, Time Navigator for Sybase Graphical Mode, designed to back up and restore Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise databases. This module offers a graphical view of the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise objects, and allows users to configure and schedule backups graphically. In addition, users have access to all the Time Navigator features including the Time Navigation, to easily select and restore objects. Backup control is available via the Time Navigator monitoring tools, such as the events and alarms viewers. Time Navigator Database Toolkit for Sybase is still available to implement more advanced features such as striping (backup on several disks at the same time).

Version 3.7.0.3

01/12/04

49

2. 6 Oracle Restore Relocation It is now possible to restore Oracle objects into a directory different from the original one on the local host or on another host (cross-restore). This feature is implemented via a text file in App meta-language defining the destination tree with the absolute paths to be used for a restore operation. The path of the file is specified through the TINA_AML_DEST_FILE environment variable.

2. 7 NDMP FL154

It is now possible to duplicate cartridges that were backed up through NDMP with Time Navigator as of version 3.7.0.1.

Warning

An Atempo or Network Appliance NDMP server is required to perform an NDMP duplication.

When duplicating through NDMP, a backup class is duplicated as a whole: if the backup of a class starts on the cartridge to be duplicated and ends on a second cartridge, the second cartridge will also be mounted and partly duplicated. The tina_cart_control command can also be used. 16419

Time Navigator now supports Network Appliance snapshot feature. It is managed via the NDMP_SNAPSHOT and NDMP_MAX_SNAPSHOT environment variables set in the NDMP application.

16602

Time Navigator now supports Network Appliance’s SnapMirror technology, which allows entire volumes (including filesystem view as well as the snapshots) to be mirrored on a remote file server. Time Navigator is able to back up the full volumes located on the remote file server for distaster recovery purposes. Time Navigator SnapMirror to Tape feature requires the use of Network Appliance SnapMirror and SnapRestore softwares.

2. 8 Unix Cluster Setup The Unix cluster setup has been improved. It is no longer necessary to manually add the local_hostname information in the $TINA_HOME/Conf/hosts.txt file.

50 Time Navigator Release Notes

3. New Behavior 3. 1 Administration M16398 It is now possible to use a dash "-" in the privileged user name.

3. 2 Cartridge Information A Jobs tab has been added to the Cartridge Information window. This tab contains information concerning all the jobs written on the cartridge, including the recycling status of the data, either "Yes" if the data can be recycled, "Data integrity" if the data is necessary to garantee that the restore of a backup folder can be performed, or "Data in retention time period" if the data is not recyclable yet.

3. 3 Installation Program M17278 For Unix, a new option -create_batch has been added, allowing to graphically create a configuration file. This file is then used to install Time Navigator in batch mode on machines without a X terminal. M16276 For Windows, a new option -create_batch has been added, allowing to graphically create a configuration file.

3. 4 Configurator M17505 Devices are now supported on all operating systems (except SGI) by the Configurator. It is also possible to modify the library share once it has been defined. However, when editing a non-shared library into a shared library or vice versa, it is recommended to delete the library in tina_adm, the administration interface, then to redeclare it via the Configurator.

3. 5 Drive Diagnosis in a SAN environment When performing a drive diagnosis in a SAN environment, where a drive can be accessed by several hosts, you can now choose which host access you want to use to perform the test.

Version 3.7.0.3

01/12/04

51

3. 6 NDMP M16419 There is no more limitation concerning the Direct Access Restore feature (DAR): it is now possible to restore directories and a number of files greater than 1024.

3. 7 Catalog Application M16019 The Catalog application now backs up the /Conf/parameters and the Adm/events files. They appear in the User Interface under the Catalog parameters and events directory. If you do not want to back up these files, set the TINA_SDB_SAVE_EVENTS environment variable to no.

Note

To reduce the backup volume, it is recommended that you define a specific backup class on this directory with the Compressed option enabled.

M17796 The name of the catalog application automatically created when a catalog is created is now .cat rather than .cat.

3. 8 Catalog Restore It is now possible to trigger a read-label reinitialization of a non-barcode library in the catalog restore process. See “tina_init: catalog restore”, page 54.

3. 9 List Application M16904 The new PIPE keyword allows to back up a dump via a named pipe. The GENBY option specifies that the pipe is created by the script or the program specified by exec_path. The USEDBY option specifies that the pipe is created by the List application. M16642 The new INFO keyword allows to display and back up comments in the file tree of the List application in the User interface (tina). M17038 The new TINA_AML_IO_TIMEOUT environment variable is used to specify a timeout allowing an external program to create the pipe. The variable is useful when using the PIPE keyword (GENBY option). M16978 The List File textbox in the Create Application window of the tina_adm interface is no longer mandatory. You can now specify the List file either in this textbox, or using the TINA_AML_SOURCE_FILE environment variable. If a List file is specified at both locations, Time Navigator will take into account the List file specified in the List File textbox (see M16961).

52 Time Navigator Release Notes

M16961 Two new environment variables have been created: TINA_AML_SOURCE_FILE and TINA_AML_DEST_FILE. The TINA_AML_SOURCE_FILE environment variable allows to define the absolute path of an App meta-language text file defining the source tree with the absolute paths to be used for a backup operation (see M16978). The TINA_AML_DEST_FILE environment variable allows to define the absolute path of an App meta-language text file defining the destination tree with the absolute paths to be used for a restore operation. The variable is used to restore List application objects in a different location from the source location (standard restore) or on another machine with a different disk configuration (cross-restore). This feature is called "relocation".

Note

Between Time Navigator versions 3.6 and 3.7.0.2, a relocation method was available provided that all links were defined with environment variables representing the mount points before the backup operation. This method is no longer supported in version 3.7.0.3. You must now use the TINA_AML_DEST_FILE environment variable.

3. 10 Time Navigator Web Restore Interface M17692 In order to restore data easily in a multi-catalog environment and to avoid having a too long platform list, the user can now choose the working catalog: ■

Either by specifying the catalog name at the end of the URL using the ?catalogname=catalog_name parameter (where catalog_name corresponds to the parameter value). Unix: http://http_server_name/cgi-bin/tina_environment_name/scripts/ tinaw_rest_login.pl?catalogname=DocCata

Windows: http://http_server_name/scripts/tina_environment_name/scripts/ tinaw_rest_login.pl?catalogname=DocCata ■

Or by entering the URL below, then selecting a working catalog in the list of available catalogs before starting Time Navigator Web Restore : Unix: http://http_server_name/cgi-bin/tina_environment_name/scripts/ tinaw_rest_catlogin.pl

Windows: http://http_server_name/scripts/tina_environment_name/scripts/ tinaw_rest_catlogin.pl

3. 11 Time Navigator Web Supervision Interface M17718 The administrator can now hide supervision information from users. The tinaw_supervisor_limited.pl script allows the administrator to deny access to the configuration page and hide certain catalogs (see Appendix in Installation Guide).

Version 3.7.0.3

For NetDisk applications: the NetDisk server name

For List applications: the List file name

4. 2 tina_init: catalog restore Some new options are available with the tina_init command: -force_reinit and -close_cart. -force_reinit can be used either in interactive or non-interactive mode. ■

The interactive mode is used for creating, modifying or restoring the catalog and is accompanied by a questionnaire used to set the parameters of the catalog operation to be performed The non-interactive mode only allows to restore a catalog and is specific to the tina_init -file; tina_init -boot or tina_init -pipe options.

The -force_reinit option is used to include a read-label reinitialization of the nonbarcode libraries associated to the catalog as part of the restore process. This option can only be used for non-barcode libraries (for libraries supporting barcodes, a barcode reinitialization is automatically performed). -close_cart can only be used in non-interactive mode. It allows to close all cartridges in

the catalog upon restoring it.

4. 3 tina_find A new option is available with the tina_find command: -long. This option specifies the display of file names in long format.

Version 3.7.0.2

73

Version 3.7.0.2

1. Installation and Upgrading Issues 1. 1 Upgrading from version 3.5.0.1 When upgrading from Time Navigator version 3.5.0.1 to 3.7, you must first upgrade to version 3.6.0.2 then to version 3.7. Please contact the Atempo Technical Support.

1. 2 Upgrading from version 3.6 or 3.7.0.1 If you are upgrading from Time Navigator version 3.6 or 3.7.0.1 to version 3.7.0.2, you must perform a catalog restore using the tina_init command once the upgrade is completed. Make sure the catalog is backed up prior to upgrading.

1. 3 From Disk Files to Disk Drives In Time Navigator 3.7, the Disk Files are replaced by Disk Drives. Make sure you take the following size and path issues into account after upgrading: Size

The minimum size for a Disk Drive is now 256 MB. When you upgrade from Time Navigator 3.6 (Disk File) to 3.7 (Disk Drive), the Disk File size you defined remains the same. If you edit your Disk Drive after upgrading, make sure you modify its size to a value greater than 256 MB. Path and device descriptor

When upgrading Time Navigator to version 3.7, a default value is assigned to the Disk Drive device descriptor and to the cartridge path: ■

The Disk Drive device descriptor is set to the $TINA_HOME value (installation path of the Time Navigator Server). The default path of the old Disk File cartridges is kept: $TINA_HOME/Data.catalog_name/DiskFiles/label_prefix,

where $TINA_HOME is the

installation path of the Time Navigator Server. If the default values are not correct (use of the path_dkf tunable on Windows, Disk Drive located on a Time Navigator Agent ...), they must be modified as follows: ■

Modify the Disk Drive device descriptor in the General tab of the Drive-Edit window.

74 Time Navigator Release Notes

Example

Modify the existing cartridge paths in the catalog via the tina_cart_control command to ensure that the catalog will be able to access those cartridges.

If the Disk File path was D:\data, you must update the catalog (which contains the C:\Program Files\Atempo\tina default path) with the correct value: tina_cart_control -chgpath -path "/c/Program Files/Atempo/tina" -path_dest /d/data

The catalog cartridge path C:\Program

Note

Files\Atempo\tina

is replaced by D:\data.

The cartridge path must be entered with the POSIX syntax, not the operating system syntax.

☞ For more information about the tina_cart_control command, see the Time Navigator Command Mode guide.

2. New Features 2. 1 Security and Administration Catalog Format

To enhance the tina_odbsave catalog backup command performances, the catalog format has changed between versions 3.7.0.1 and 3.7.0.2. As a result, you must restore the catalog using the tina_init command when performing an upgrade. Make sure the catalog is backed up prior to upgrading. Agents in version 3.6 and 3.7.0.1 remain compatible with a Time Navigator Server version 3.7.0.2. Storage Node

The new Storage Node functionality allows you to: ■

Back up and restore data bypassing the cache

Data can now be transferred directly from the hard disk to the drive without transiting through the cache space on the backup server (this avoids sending data back and forth on the network). A host with a locally attached drive can therefore be declared as a "Storage Node" and send data directly to tape. ■

Share drives within a single catalog

It is now possible to share drives that can be accessed by several hosts via a SAN, within the same catalog.

Version 3.7.0.2

Note

Warning

07/18/03

With version 3.7.0.2, it is now possible to: Perform cartridge duplication directly on the storage node, without sending data through the cache on the server. Use the tina_stream command (RMAN, DB2).

The following features are not available with the storage node: - Multiple writing - Synthetic backup - Macro-multiplexing - Only the sidf format can be used (tar, cpio and TiNa formats are not supported) - The tina_export command within the same catalog, is not supported

Redirecting Operator Requests

This feature allows to migrate backed up data from a Disk Drive to a cartridge, and to restore it automatically regardless of the location of the data. Implementing this solution requires assistance from the Atempo Professional Services.
