INTERNATIONAL COMPOSITION CONTEST FOR PERCUSSION ENSEMBLES

Rules • Chapter 1 – General conditions Article 1 – The composition contest for percussion ensembles is open to composers of any nationality, without any age limit. The entry fee is €50 for each score. Article 2 – The submitted scores will never have been played or published. Transcriptions are not admitted. Article 3 – Three different categories are opened: 1st Cycle, 2nd Cycle, 3rd Cycle (Degrees corresponding to the different studies cycles in the Conservatories). See articles 8 to 13. Article 4 – Each composer may present only one score per category. Each score is equivalent to one entry. (1 score = €50 ; 2 scores = €100 € ; 3 scores = €150) Article 5 – The teachers of the “Vacances Percutantes” and the members of the jury are not allowed to compete. Article 6 – The competitors must testify that their scores are unpublished and have never been performed or awarded a prize in any other competition. Article 7 – The competitor will send all the documents required in the article 22.

• Chapter 2 - The competition Article 8 – The duration of the submitted works for 1st Cycle is 6 minutes maximum, works for 2nd Cycle 8 minutes maximum, works for 3rd Cycle 12 minutes maximum. Article 9 – The submitted works will be written for trios at least. The following instructions should be respected: • • •

1st Cycle : 6 percussionists maximum (voices could be multiple) 2nd Cycle : 8 percussionists maximum 3rd Cycle : 6 percussionists maximum

Article 10 - The style chosen by the composer is free. The submitted works can be written for tuned Percussion, for Drums ensembles or for ensembles mixing drums and tuned percussion. Article 11 - The available equipment is listed below: -

Pitched Percussion: Xylophones, Marimbas (4 octaves 1/3 & 5 octaves), Vibraphones (3 octaves), Glockenspiels (2 octaves 1/2), Tubular bells.

Drums: Snare drums, Toms, Bongos, Congas, Timpani, Drum sets, Timbales, Bass Drums

-

Accessories: Maracas, Claves, Guiros, Triangles, etc…

Metals: Gongs, Tams, Cymbals

Corporal Percussion is possible

This list is not exhaustive (see article 12).

Article 12 – Please contact the competition management for further information about the available instruments. Any score presented with instruments not allowed by the competition rules will be excluded. Article 13 – The submitted works will be read by the teachers and by the members of the jury. Together, they will choose five pieces for each category. If needed, they will reclassify the scores. Article 14 – The jury will choose the winners of the Competition among the selected works. Article 15 – The selected works will be performed by the trainees of the Vacances Percutantes during the Composition Competition Concert, on Saturday the 20th of July 2013.

• Chapter 3 - Awards Article 16 – For each category (1st Cycle, 2nd Cycle, 3rd Cycle), two awards will be offered: -

A jury prize (€500/1000/1500)

Besides, each piece which has been awarded will be edited by Alfonce Production. Article 17 - Deadlines -

Scores must be anonymous; the Competition management will give a personal number to each composer. Article 20 – The jury will consist of musical personalities, composers and percussionists. The Jury’s decision will be final. Article 21 – The award presentation will take place on Saturday the 20th of July 2013 in Marmande (France, Lot-et-Garonne) and will be preceded by a concert during which the selected pieces will be performed by the trainees of the Vacances Percutantes.
