Dear Parents, We are in Term 2. It gives us great pleasure to be your child’s Nursery 1 teachers. We will continue to support your children learning and development and work in collaboration with parents to enhance the child potential and growth. The theme for this term is ‘Myself, Family and Friends’. Children will have opportunity to engage in interesting learning experiences. They will be able to share and exchange their ideas through interaction and participation .Children will have hands on experience in art. He will be able to express his thoughts and ideas through drawing and painting. Children will learn about self- identity through dough play, songs and storytelling. Children will have opportunity to interact and share their ideas. They will be able to communicate about their families and friends. The experiences will enhance the child’s self-esteem and confidence. Children will be engaged in meaningful experiences that promotes intellectual, social and emotional development. Children will work on next exercises in the Montessori curriculum. The practical life exercises enhance fine manipulative skills. The sensorial materials help the child to problem solve. The language exercises aid in the development of language and communication skills. The mathematics exercises create awareness of mathematical understanding and concepts. The cultural materials create awareness of the surrounding and enhance child cognitive thinking. In Term 2, Passport to the World, we will be exploring Norway, one of the Nordic countries occupying the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsular. Parents-Teachers Meeting will be held in June 2008. During this session we will have an opportunity to discuss the overall development of your child and share our observations of your child’s progress in school. Practical Life

Sensorial

Practical life exercises help young children to refine their fine motor skills. The exercises increase their concentration ability as they work to complete their tasks. Practical life also emphasize on social skills, which helps young children in their social and emotional development.

The sensorial materials are designed to educate the impressions the child receives from his senses so as to build these into an inner mental order and aid in the development of his intelligence.

In this term, we will continue with exercises on Social Grace and Courtesy, Exercise for Development of Dexterity & Craft Activities, Care of Indoor Environment, Care of Self as well as Care of Outdoor.

In Term 2, we will continue with presentations of exercises on the knobbed cylinders, knobless cylinder, Colour Box and Geometric solid. The selected sensorial materials will help children achieve the objective set out. Teacher’s reflection

Language The Pink Montessori Scheme materials are presented to children to teach them phonetic sounds of alphabets. For this term, we will continue to present the exercises to introduce the twenty-six alphabets.



Mathematics Young children are intrigue by counting and numbers. Thus, making learning fun will interest them more to learn Math. Songs, games and hands on activities will allow your child to discover simple mathematical concepts. Using objects that can be found in your child’s environment to learn Math can aid him in understanding these concepts. This term, we will be focusing on the following exercises:

Teacher’s reflection Jing Yuan traced sandpaper letters and articulated the sounds of the letters. She is able to trace and recall the phonetic sounds. This exercise helps the child to enhance in her language skills and prepares for writing.

Self Identity, Family and Friends

Cultural Culture materials provide children with the experiences in botany, zoology history and geography and natural sciences. The cultural experiences enable the child to view the worlds holistically Maria Montessori, “cosmic education”, called this and it is aimed to bring about in a Montessori classroom a variety of materials in botany, zoology, history, geography, art, music along with the respect for different cultures and people.

April- June: For the thematic lesson in Term 2 we will be focusing on: • Self esteem-Me, Myself and I • My Family and their jobs • My friends and feelings The child learns about his self identity. The learning experiences would help him to increase his self- esteem and self confidence. Children will have opportunity to express their emotions and feelings through art activity, discussion, music and movement, story telling and participation. Children are encouraged to communicate and share their ideas. They will be able to talk about their families and friends. The experiences will promote development of language and communication skills and enhance a child social emotional well-being.

Teacher’s reflection George is able to say the names of models of sea creatures. This demonstrates his awareness of the surrounding and cognitive thinking.
