REFLECTION | RÉFLEXION Performing Mozart’s Requiem is a special, demanding thing. This fantastic work didn’t get finished by the composer, but his ideas were crystal clear. Süssmayr did a rather good job of finishing it, but as the revised version by Franz Beyer — which we are playing tonight — is based on everything original Mozart wrote and, critically, on Süssmayr’s solutions, it makes this fantastic piece of music better, and closer to ‘real, original’ Mozart. Karina Gauvin breathes life into the beautiful Exsultate, Jubilate (where every detail is 100% Mozart), and we finish the first half with Valentin Silvestrov’s mysteriously soft and beautiful The Messenger, which has a kind of spiritual connection with Mozart, using as it does not Mozart’s original music, but only reminiscences of it.

Faint and weary Thou hast sought me, On the Cross of suffering bought me, Shall such grace be vainly brought me?
Quaerens me, sedisti lassus; Redemisti Crucem pacem: Tantus labor non sit causus.
Righteous Judge, for sin’s pollution, Grant Thy gift of absolution, Ere that day of retribution.
Juste judex ultionis Donum fac remissionis Ante diem rationis.

Guilty now I pour my moaning, All my shame with anguish owning; Spare, O God, Thy suppliant groaning.
Ingemisco tamquam reus, Culpa rubet vultus meus; Supplicanti parce, Deus.
Through the sinful woman shriven, Through the dying thief forgiven, Thou to me a hope hast given.
Worthless are my prayers and sighing, Yet, good Lord, in grace complying, Rescue me from fires undying.
With Thy favoured sheep O place me, Nor among the goats abase me, But to Thy right hand upraise me.
Inter oves locum praesta, Et ab haedis me sequestra, Statuens in parte dextra.
chorus 5. When the wicked are confounded, Doomed to flames of woe unbounded, Call me, with Thy Saints surrounded.

5. Confutatis maledictis, Flammis acribus addictis, Voca me cum benedictis.
Low I kneel, with heart submission! See, like ashes my contrition! Help me in my last condition!
6. Ah! that day of tears and mourning! From the dust of earth returning, Man for judgement must prepare him;
6. Lacrimosa dies illa, Qua resurget ex favilla Judicandus homo reus.
6. Oh!
Spare, O God, in mercy spare him! Lord, all pitying, Jesu blest, Grant them Thine eternal rest. Amen.
Huic ergo parce, Deus, Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Requiem.
Épargnez-le, mon Dieu! Seigneur, bon Jésus, donnez-lui le repos éternel. Amen.

IV. OFFERTORIUM chorus 1. Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell, and from the deep pit. Deliver them from the lion’s mouth, lest hell swallow them up, lest they fall into darkness. And let the standard-bearer, St. Michael, bring them into the holy light. Which Thou didst promise of old to Abraham and his seed.
IV. OFFERTORIUM

VI. BENEDICTUS
Sed signifer sanctus Michael, repraesentet eas in lucem sanctam. Quam olim Abrahae promisisti, et semini ejus.
Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis.
