Mounting instructions for VKDA MacPherson suspension bearing kits REMOVAL • If necessary compress the spring with cables or rods (for excentric springs in relation with the shock absorber; i.e. Citroën, Peugeot) (fig. 1).
• Put the car on jacks and remove the wheels. • If necessary mark the upper fastenings before releasing the upper fixing bolts.
• If the upper fixing is done directly by the shock absorber nut, release it (without removing it) and block the shock absorber shaft.
If the steering knuckle is directly attached to the absorber’s strut (fig. 2):
• Remove the bolt retaining the steering knuckle to the shock absorber.
• With a special tool uncouple the steering knuckle from the shock absorber.
• If the stabilizing bar is connected to the shock absorber (fig. 3), remove the bolt fixed on the field rod and the shock absorber so as to separate them.
• If the brake flexible lines are attached to the shock absorber, disconnect them. 1
Two cases can be encountered for the lower fixings: The strut is fixed by two bolts on the knuckle (fig. 4):
• Mark the bolt’s positioning, if needed, on the strut and separate the two elements.
• Remove the entire assembly (spring and shock absorber) without touching the cover of the driving shaft.
• Maintain the steering knuckle in position to avoid separating it from the driving shaft.
The shock absorber is forced into the knuckle’s upper cylindrical housing (fig. 5).
• Remove the knuckle’s climper bolt maintaining the shock absorber strut in place.
• With required tools separate the upper cylindrical housing with a rotation of 90 degrees.
• If necessary, remove the blocking nut of the linkage ball joint in the steering knuckle, then separate them so as to lower the hinge and separate the shock absorber strut.
• Maintain the steering knuckle in position in order to avoid its separating from the driving shaft.
2
To facilitate the dismounting, you may have to remove the knuckle together with the shock absorber (fig. 6). In this case the following steps are necessary: • Remove the knuckle climper bolt maintaining the shock absorber strut in place. • Remove the brake pads, then the brake caliper from the brake disc. Maintain it in position in order not to damage the brake lines. • Remove the retaining bolt between the steering knuckle and the shock absorber strut and separate them with the help of ball joint splitter. • If necessary remove the inner collar of the driving shaft. • Separate the driving shaft from the brake hub. • Remove the upper fixings. • Remove the shock absorber strut or the knuckle together with the shock absorber. At the workbench (fig. 7): • Compress the spring with special tools until the upper spring seat is no longer under pressure. • Remove the upper shock absorber nut and separate the different components.
REFITTING • Put in the new components found in the SKF Kit in reverse order of removal. • Check the condition of the shock absorbers, and replace them if necessary. • Check the general standing of other components. • For all other components, install them in reverse order of removal.
