Introducing Your Judges EVE WILLIAMSON (WILLCHOW): Most of my life has been spent with dogs as a very large part of it. In my early years, they were border collies, or as we called them then, sheep dogs. Bob, was our family dog, a black and white typical sheep dog who thought that I was one of his sheep and used herd us children, when my father said “ take them home Bob” he did! Nipping our ankles if we strayed. But he was a wonderful responsible companion, and the first step in my lifelong love of dogs. I have been involved with Chow chows since 1982, but not having more than two at a time until 1993. It is quite a difficult thing being a ‘dog person’ when your husband is not, and my dogs have always been house dogs, even worse for him! Our latest home has a separate stone built kennel block, but the dogs are still ‘house dogs’. I have owned some wonderful chows with delightful personalities, but only one entry in the KC stud book, instead of the 3 required by the K.C. However, but I am truly loyal to our breed. I have not really done a tremendous amount of showing, and when my daughter (who used to accompany me to shows and assist with the driving) left me for Australia I found the long distance driving alone quite difficult. I have to say how much I admire the ladies such as Anita Westlake, Joann Williamson, Iris Bowker and others, who have often driven themselves for miles and miles to shows, both there and back. In 1997 I was happy to ‘work in the background’ as Treasurer and then later taking over as Secretary as well for Northern Counties Chow Chow Club, leaving early in 2010, due to pressure of work. Currently I have only three Chows and a young Tibetan Mastiff who towers, in size, above everyone. I live in hopes that I will have a new Chow puppy for showing later this year. I have only bred two litters myself, finding it quite difficult when ones husband is ‘not amused’ Most of my chows have arrived home without his knowledge , I used to sneak them in and hope he wouldn’t notice a new one amongst the others!!!! I actually had one for two whole days before he did, poor man, shame on me! When I lost Ruby, I was so distraught that Robert said I could have a new puppy and we went and chose Nushka, well, actually she chose Robert but a fortnight after she arrived so did Tara. Poor Robert thought he was seeing double!!!!! I successfully completed the Chow judges training scheme in 1997 plus all of the Kennel Club’s exams, and attended numerous seminars and lectures too, which I still enjoy doing, one is never ‘too old to learn’ To date I have judged over 210 Chow chows at various open shows and two championship shows without CCs on offer for Chows. Plus Chows judged at the Chow Chow Clubs fun show, and a considerable number of all breeds, pedigree dogs having been the sole judge at five charity shows. Also, I am enjoying stewarding and this year, am once again at Leeds Championship Show. During my time ‘in chows’ I have really enjoyed meeting Chowists of long standing, and of learning so much more about our wonderful breed. I am looking forward to judging the DOGS at the MIDLAND CHOW CHOW CLUB’S Championship Show, and would like to thank the officers and committee for having the confidence in me, to put my name forward to the Kennel Club for approval to become a championship show judge, I feel honoured that they have invited me, and hope that I do justice to their confidence and that of the clubs who supported the application. I would also like to take this opportunity of thanking you, the entrants for supporting me personally, and for entering your chows. Please remember, that you arrive with the best dog, and, win or lose, you leave with the best dog! I do hope that you all have a very happy and pleasant day out with us. Good Luck! PAT HAWKER (CHILITE): I purchased my first Chow in 1975, a black bitch. She produced my foundation bitch CHILITE HOLLY, also black, who was a good Show Winner and breeder. ‘Holly’ had 5 litters totalling 51 puppies! (those were the days.) Almost all of them were black. My most notable dog that went back to her was CH. C. CHASERIDER and his son C. SHANGHAI, the Sire of CHAMPION CARMALDIES CAN CAN CHARLIE, who had a major influence on the breed for a number of years. I began judging Chows in 1987 and later passed the judges training scheme. I have also judged all breeds in Utility, Toy and Terrier Groups. I owned Chows for some 22 years – mainly blacks – and my love of the Breed continues. I always had a small breed running alongside the Chows, namely Chihuahuas, Shiba Inu and German Spitz (Klein). I currently have just 6 Spitz that I show, having bred 5 Klein Champions. I also own and occasionally judge American Miniature Horses. 5
