Synopsis The red moon threatens the existence of our planet. Mankind only hope lies upon the shoulders of the enigmatic Paul WR, the most talented astronaut of his generation. Mysteriously, a few hours before the mission launch, Paul has disappeared.

The last voyage of the enigmatic Paul WR is a poetic science fiction film, directed by Romain Quirot. “The film is inspired by works of science fiction that I enjoyed as a child. The one’s with flying cars, a threat to the existence of mankind, and one mission that can save us all. I liked the idea that Paul WR, has absolutely no desire to become the savoir of humanity. He eludes his mission by wandering alone through an immense desert. As far as influences go, you could say that the film is somewhere in-between Star Wars and Paris, Texas.” As a director, working to create an authentic universe in the realm of science fiction is fascinating, especially in France,   because the genre is so rarely exploited. As a writer, I find the intrigue of the film resides in the last interactions Paul has with the people he meets. It’s the people he encounters, who will   ultimately influence his decision to save mankind PWR, is no ordinary hero.  He perceives - as does the audience - the thoughts of others. It is his curse: an affliction that he would rather live without. The film’s essential question is: Why would you sacrifice yourself for a humanity incapable of concealing its worst flaws?

A director with a strong literary background, Romain Quirot was notably inspired by the works of Ray Bradbury and Antoine de Saint Exupery. “Ray Bradbury approaches SF with such poetry and detachment which was a true inspiration to me. He embraces some codes of the genre, but the essence and intrigue of his stories lie elsewhere. While making this film, my ambition was to try and break the codes that science fiction and disaster films have installed over the years.   I wanted to tell a story where grand tales of heroism feel out of place. While writing the scenario, I kept seeing this image of the Little Prince in my mind. The narrator of the book, a child, draws an elephant swallowed whole by a boa constrictor… relatively proud of himself, he   decides to show his drawing to his parents. Strangely, he realizes that adults don’t see a an elephant swallowed by snake, all they see is the drawing of a strange hat. So, the little boy sits down, and sketches the same drawing, but this time,  he makes the elephant visible in the snakes belly. Because “adults always need explanations.” This perception, and attitude concerning “adults”, and “other people” is ubiquitous throughout the story. The difficulty of living others, and ultimately understanding them is an underlying theme throughout the film.”

Compositor / Etienne Forget . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The original soundtrack of Paul WR was composed Etienne Forget. A longtime friend of Romain Quirot, Etienne was also a finalist in the contest of the Audi Talent Awards for Music in 2014. Having worked together on various projects over the years, Etienne and Romain conceived the musical atmosphere of the film hand in hand. “Romain wanted to have a minimalist melody, something easy to remember, that sticks in your head. We decided to use an instrument called a marimba to carry the main melody. After the main melody was validated, I proposed using   slow, aerien compositions for the chords sections, and light early 60’s electronic sounds to describe the universe in which the film takes place.” Under the direction of Etienne Forget, the musicians of Phillippe Nadale recorded in Ferber Studio with musical engineer Benjamin Caillaud. Gaelle Mechaly soprano voice adds a depth to the soundtrack which was mixed by Etienne Colin in Obsidienne Studio. Listen the the OST by clicking here : Lien vers la bande originale du film
