Base containing electronic components

A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) is a fluorescent lamp designed to replace an incandescent lamp. They fit into light fixtures formerly used for incandescent lamps. CFL uses a tube which is curved or folded to fit into the space of an incandescent bulb and has a base which contains the electronic components. Compared to general-service incandescent lamps giving the same amount of visible light, CFLs use less power (one fifth to one third) and have a longer rated life (eight to fifteen times). In most countries, a CFL has a higher purchase price than an incandescent lamp, but can save over five times its purchase price in electricity costs over the lamp's lifetime. There are also some disadvantages using CFLs. They have a starting time longer than incandescent light bulbs which switch on within a second. CFLs also emit some ultraviolet and blue light dangerous for human health. The bulbs contain mercury vapor which is toxic and problems occur during recycling when this vapor is liberated in the atmosphere. CFLs contain electronic components which can fail. In fact there are other disadvantages like green house gas emmission due to electricity production by natural gas. So is it really a good idea to discard completely incandescent light bulbs? The question may be asked. PART 1 Make an exposé on low consumption light bulbs. You can use your knowledge and information given in the given document. (you can also use documents studied in class) The followings are guidelines for your exposé. Make a brief history about light bulbs. Make a brief presentation of the compact fluorescent lamp. Discuss about the advantages and disadvantages of using compact fluorescent lamps. LED light bulbs are more and more used nowadays. Discuss. Is it really a good idea to discard completely incandescent light bulbs? Discuss. Conclude.

PART 2 An energy meter has been used to measure the energy W consumed by an incandescent light bulb of power P equal to 100 W. Energy W consumed in kilowatt hour (kWh) against time in hour (h) graph has been obtained.

Describe the graph of W against time. Determine the slope of the graph and compare the value obtained to the power P of the light bulb. Determine a simple formula between W, P and t. (Give the units) A LED light bulb can consume 6 times less energy than the incandescent light bulb. Give the power of the LED light bulb.
