Design Intent A. Build the top part using lower half of the camera without using Publication. B. Replace the lower (referenced part) by its variant part, which has a different shape. C. Updating the model with new variant will not be possible with out re-routing the child features. D. Publish the required surfaces of reference lower half of the camera case. E. Build the top part again using the published surfaces. F. Replace the lower (referenced part) by its variant part. G. Update the model. You will be able to update without any re-routing.

Stages in the Process 1. Build the Top part referring to the Inferior body without using Publication. 2. Replace the Inferior body with its variant and update the assembly. You will have to re-route links. 3. Publish the reference part. 4. Rebuild the top part using published elements. 5. Replace Inferior body with its variant (with published element) and update the assembly. Assembly gets updated without manual rerouting.

Why Publish Geometry? Mouse

Publishing geometry has many benefits such as:

Button Assy Lower Assy Cover

A. Label a geometry

Front Left Assy A_Surfaces

B. Ease access to geometry from the specification tree

Surfaces Multi-Section Surface

C. Control the external references

Instructor Notes:

$Speech: A. give it a name that can be easily recognized (particularly in the case of publishing edges, faces, etc.). B. To make particular geometry easier to access from the specification tree C. An option is available that lets you only select as external reference only the published elements. D. Published elements that have same name in the source part and the child part are automatically reconnected, as you would have to reconnect them all one by one if they are not published.% $Show: Show the label of the inputs Show the access to geometry (show that you can give access only to selected data and not to others) Show restricted access only to published elements in MML environment (show option)%

When to Publish Wireframes and Surfaces?

Iterations of the Inputs geometries

Elements to be Published

1. Reference Geometries. .

.

2. Elements subjected to regular iterations. 3. Geometries commonly referred by different users.

Benefits of Publication

1. Multiple user can refer the published feature and design the family parts. 2. Modifications in the parent published part are propagated to linked part without manual re-routing.

Instructor Notes:

$Speech: In a Concurrent engineering context: - Use style input data bound to be versioned (style iteration) - Style input mainly composed of wires and surfaces Wires and surfaces publication important in a concurrent engineering context Now we’ll see the mechanisms to do this (use publication of elements in mml context)%

Geometry Publication Wires and surfaces involved in a concurrent engineering process are published at the part level:

The part containing the geometry to publish is activated

The publication appear in the tree

Geometry Publication Publishing Geometry at a Part Level

Let us see the geometry publication (L6_PUBLICATION.CATProduct)

Instructor Notes:

$Speech: To publish geometry, you have to be in the context of the part: the active workbench have to be the GSD workbench. The naming of the publication is very important: give the publications relevant names that clearly express the function of the geometry. The objective is to work in a concurrent mode: giving clear name will ease the readability of the model. In a company, you may have to respect the naming conventions%

Use Published Elements in Multi-Model Link There are two methods to use published geometry of a part in a multi-model environment:

- Copy/paste of published elements

Parametric surface created using external referenced data

Instructor Notes:

$Speech: To use elements published in a reference part, their are 2 solutions: 1- Directly select the publish element to reuse when you need it 2- Copy and paste the needed geometry into the target part In both cases, CATIA creates a copy with link of the geometry in the target part, gathered in a geometrical set called “External References”. If you need to provide to a collaborator only the part on which he needs to work, the second solution is the good one: you will provide the part already containing the copy with link of the published elements%

Surface and Wireframe Publication Publication helps in managing design iterations during product development cycle and provides easy availability of geometric elements to different users. Wires and surfaces are published at part level. Following points must be kept in mind:

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

The name of the published element must be exactly similar to that in source part and child part. Easily recognizable names must be given to the published elements. Geometry is grouped to give easier access in the Specification Tree. An option is available that allows to select, only the published elements as an external reference.

Use Published Surface in Product Context There are two methods to use published geometry of a part in a multi-model environment.

2.

Geometry Selection during design process. A. Publishing of Elements. B. Creating External References in a New part. C. Creating parametric surface using external referenced geometry. Copy/Paste published elements: You can also copy/paste the published elements with links, to place the external references in “New Part” before you need them. The result is the same even in the tree.

Exercises Overview 6A and 6B You will practice what you have learnt by working through the exercises: Exercise 6A

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES

Exercise 6B

Instructor Notes:

$Speech: Present the exercise Have the students begin the exercise and note the time Assist students as needed with the exercise 6A: Do a copy paste of an element that comes from another part to create geometry based on it. See the impact of the changes in the base geometry. Practice also a little hybrid modeling by splitting a solid with a surface 6B: also use of elements from another part but this time in the context of an assembly. In this exercise, the geometries are published and they are replaced%

Case Study: Multi Model Environment with Surfaces In this exercise, you will practice multi-model linking using external references in assembly context. You will understand the merits of using publication in an multi model environment.

Built the top part using bottom half of the camera without using Publication. Replace the bottom (referenced part) by its variant part which has different shape. Updating the model with new variant will not be possible with out rerouting the links. Publish the required surfaces of reference bottom half of the camera case. Build the top part again using the published surfaces. Replace the bottom (referenced part) by is variant part. Update the model. You will be able to update without rerouting the links.

Using the techniques you have learned in this lesson and previous exercises, create the model without detailed instruction.

Instructor Notes:

$Speech: Present the recap exercise. The same manipulations as before are done except that now, you have less instructions and the organization that you give to the part will depend on your study of the data. They have 30 minutes to do this.%
