THE AMERICA’S CUP The third most popular sports event in the world The oldest sports trophy in modern history Just over 150 years ago on August 22, 1851, the New York Yacht Club entered its schooner "America", in the race for the extremely prestigious British Queen's Cup. “America” beat the 14 English yachts taking part and renamed the cup the "America's Cup". For 130 years, the competition for the Cup was dominated by the United States. In 1983, however, Australia won the cup. This victory ushered in a new era of internationalization and technical innovation. The public interest in the America's Cup has grown with each competition and it has become one of the world’s major sporting events. By deciding to become an official partner in this event, AREVA has become a leading figure in a great international adventure which receives a great deal of media attention.

One trophy, two cups • The Louis Vuitton Cup The aim of this competition is to select the Challenger who will then go on to race against the Defender, winner of the previous competition. Each syndicate will compete against each other in match races called "Round Robins". The winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup goes on to the Defender. • The America’s Cup The winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup, the Challenger, competes against the Defender in up to 9 match races. The first to win 5 of these match races wins the America's Cup. The winning team becomes the new Defender, takes the trophy back to its own country, and organizes the next competition.
