HP Positioned to Lead in New Era of Business Technology

HP announced new solutions and services aimed at capitalizing on the next phase of the technology industry – Business Technology.

Moving beyond information technology, the new era of business technology is one where results are measured in only one way: how they deliver business outcomes.

By integrally optimizing the technology environments of enterprises with business outcomes, HP is empowering chief information officers with the tools they need to be tied closer to chief executive officers in strategic business planning.

“The age of information technology as we know it is over. The new reality is that technology doesn’t just support the business – technology powers the business and helps drive growth,” said Ann Livermore, executive vice president, Technology Solutions Group, HP. “The shift to business technology enables CIOs to weigh and measure their investments in terms of business outcomes – whether it’s managing risk, accelerating growth or lowering costs.”

5

Research conducted by HP shows an increasing alignment between business and technology decision makers.(1) According to the study, an overwhelming majority of both CEOs and CIOs believes that technology is integral to the success of their companies. Additionally, 88 percent of CEOs and 90 percent of CIOs say they share similar visions for how

technology can deliver business outcomes at their companies.

But while 99 percent of CEOs agree that technology is integral to the success of their businesses, only 32 percent of them involve their CIOs at the inception of strategic planning. “Moving forward, more CIOs will sit at their companies’ boardroom tables during strategic business planning,” said Livermore.

To address customers’ key business outcomes of managing risk, accelerating growth and lowering costs, HP unveiled at its Technology@Work conference in Berlin new solutions and services within its Business Information Optimization, Business Technology Optimization and Adaptive Infrastructure portfolios. Business Information Optimization

The HP Business Information Optimization portfolio helps companies make better decisions and manage critical information throughout its lifecycle. The portfolio is built around two key solutions: Business Intelligence and Information Lifecycle Management.

In a related press release available at www.hp.com/go/hpbio release, HP announced the general availability of HP Neoview, a nextgeneration, 24x7 data warehouse built on an integrated hardware, software and services platform.

In addition, the company introduced four new business intelligence services to help organizations with their most pressing information management challenges – those rooted in massive data volumes and complex data environments. Designed to deliver better business outcomes by enabling organizations to improve decision making for competitive advantage, the services include: Strategy and Planning, Information Integration, Information Delivery and Information Quality. Business Technology Optimization

The HP Business Technology Optimization portfolio uses the company’s application and management software and services to help customers align business and IT, manage IT services and comprehensively automate change.

As of today, hundreds of customers worldwide have purchased

a combination of HP OpenView and Mercury products – now part of HP’s BTO software portfolio – since the Mercury acquisition close in November 2006.

A new set of HP Service Management services, along with HP Software, helps customers achieve continuous alignment between business and IT and deliver IT services at defined service levels, quality and cost targets. HP Service Management services use IT infrastructure library (ITIL) v3 to provide a holistic view of an enterprise’s entire IT landscape to improve service management processes. The services include: Demand and Portfolio Management, Application Transition Management, Business Service Management, Traditional IT Service Management and Service Driven Operations.

“Every day, First American uses technology to be more competitive,” said Evan Jafa, chief technology officer, The First American Corporation. “Because of the visibility that HP Software products give us into our IT and business processes, we no longer have ‘blame-storming sessions.’ Instead, we have very direct visibility into areas where problems might be, and we very quickly go after them. HP Business Technology Optimization solutions have enabled us to shorten the cycles of key ITIL processes such as incident management, problem resolution and release management.” Adaptive Infrastructure

"IT is no longer an appropriate term for the gear, the discipline of running the gear, or the industry," wrote George F. Colony, chairman and chief executive officer of Forrester Research, Inc. in the August 2006 Forrester Research report titled "My View: IT To BT." "If you are the head of B.T., you are shoulder to shoulder with fellow executives who are running the operation. You're focused on improving process and finding new sources of revenue. You apply technology for business results. It's time to replace I.T. with the term 'business technology,' or B.T. This change conveys the fact that business is technology and technology is business."

Motorola Phones Held Not to Infringe University of Texas System Patent

Motorola, Inc. has obtained an order granting summary judgment of non-infringement in a patent case brought by the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System (“University of Texas System”). The Federal District Court for the Western District of Texas issued an order finding that certain Motorola handsets do not infringe U.S. Patent No. 4,674,112 (“the ‘112 patent”).

17

Although the Court’s ruling is limited to certain Motorola products, the parties have subsequently agreed that all other accused products are subject to the same ruling. This agreement is expected to result in a complete dismissal of the case, although University of Texas System may appeal. “Motorola is extremely gratified that our belief in the non-infringement of our products has been vindicated, but we are frustrated that University of Texas System’s ambush litigation tactics have caused the parties to spend millions of dollars to reach this point,”

said Jonathan P. Meyer, senior vice president for Intellectual Property Law, Motorola, Inc. “The University waited silently for many years while Motorola and many other companies developed textentry technology for mobile phones, then claimed millions of dollars in damages only as the patent expired”, Meyer said.

Motorola will defend the Court’s ruling aggressively in the event that University of Texas System files an appeal and looks forward to a final conclusion that will free Motorola’s products from these ill-conceived allegations of infringement.

University of Texas System, represented by Michael W. Shore of the Dallas law firm of Shore Chan Bragalone, has asserted the ‘112 patent against Motorola and over 30 additional handset manufacturers. Shore has claimed that the ‘112 patent covers software used for text messaging on nearly all mobile handsets and that University of Texas System is owed hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. In rejecting Shore’s claims, the Court found that University of Texas System is trying to interpret the claims of the ‘112 patent in a manner inconsistent with what University of Texas System’s lawyers told the Patent Office in order to obtain the grant of the ‘112 patent. “Plaintiff cannot have it one way at prosecution and another way during infringement litigation”, the Court stated. www.portablecomputingmag.com

Globacom picks Alcatel-Lucent to build first 3G UMTS/HSPA network in West Africa

Alcatel-Lucent announced a contract with Globacom, Nigeria’s second national operator, to supply and install a wireless network based on UMTS/HSPA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service/High Speed Packet Access) technology in selected Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Benin and Ibadan. This UMTS/HSPA network, the first one in West Africa, follows last summer's successful field trial of the 3G platform on the Globacom network and will be built to provide one million more subscribers with state-of-the-art mobile broadband services. It reinforces AlcatelLucent’s worldwide leadership in mobile broadband and its leading position on the African market.

This project will enable Globacom, Africa’s fastest-growing operator, to expand the capacity of its network so it can accommodate an additional million subscribers while offering the next generation of sophisticated new services, including advanced multimedia, mobile broadband and converged services such as video call, video streaming and high-speed mobile Internet access on 3G mobile handsets, phone-to-phone and fixed-tomobile video telephony, video greeting kiosk and video mail box. Globacom also will introduce high-speed Internet and mobile data services to business and residential subscribers through USB modems and data cards.

uct portfolio” said Dr. Adenuga, Globacom’s Chairman. “Through our strategic cooperation with this trusted partner, we are constantly working to introduce innovative services and build the largest and best telecommunications network in the continent.” “This agreement further proves Globacom’s confidence in our leading edge technology and our teams. Our long-standing collaboration in mobile networks is now extended to mobile broadband. This project is strategic for both companies because Africa is one of the fastest growing mobile market in the world and has huge potential,” said Etienne Fouques, President of AlcatelLucent’s carrier activities.

Fouques noted that this contract demonstrates Alcatel-Lucent’s commitment to help service providers in high-growth economies transform their services, network and business to profitably increase voice and data penetration, and enable mass-market broadband.

The agreement calls for Alcatel-Lucent to provide a turnkey solution including UMTS/HSPA radio and core network based on its IMS ready NGN (Next-Generation Network solution, along with network deployment, network and applications integration and services. $0.99 .info Domains Offered by Free Rider Web Hosting

Free Rider Web Hosting announced it is now selling .info domains for $0.99. The domains, which usually sell for $8.95, are on sale until 18 May.

.info domains are ideal for web sites that provide information about a business's products or services, or information about a non-profit organization. The domains have been available since 2001, and since that time, more than 4 million .info domains have been registered. "Free Rider Web Hosting ran this promotion in March, and we were surprised at how popular the promotion was," said Simon Drain, CEO of Free Rider Web Hosting. "As a result, we have decided to offer the special price again. There are still a lot of .info

domains available for registration, so customers should be able to find a suitable domain easily."

Customers who find that their preferred domain has already been taken will find Free Rider Web Hosting's Smart Search facility to be helpful. Smart Search suggests other suitable domains by using related keywords, and by adding suitable prefixes and suffixes. Customers can use Smart Search to look for available .info domains, or can widen the search and look for domains using several top level domains such as .com and .biz. “Not only have customers found Smart Search to be helpful, the service has been used by Free Rider Web Hosting staff when working on new projects. Smart Search has been invaluable when finding new domains,” said Simon Drain.

.info domains will be instantly recognized by Internet users from around the world. The word “Info” is recognized as meaning “information” in about 37 languages, so the domain is suitable for web sites that provide information to people overseas.

Free Rider Web Hosting (http://www.frwh.net) also suggests that customers consider renewing their .com and .net domains within the next few months. Many registrars will be increasing their prices in October due to increases in the fees charged by Verisign, the company that maintains the Domain Name System for .com and .net domains. Free Rider Web Hosting is suggesting the customers renew their domains for a period of several years at current prices; the increased prices will not take effect until the next renewal.

Proventia Desktop firewall stymies malware

In the days of overcomplicated security tools, it's satisfying to review a feature-rich product that intentionally keeps it simple. Internet Security Systems (ISS) Proventia Desktop (also known as IBM Proventia Desktop Endpoint Protection) offers a host-based firewall core supplemented by anti-virus, anti-malware, buffer overflow exploit protection, intrusion prevention, and it can function as a Cisco Network Admission Control agent. I was eager to test version 9.0.226.0, released after the IBM buyout of ISS, to see how the product is holding out against the competition.

Setup made simple

Installation of Proventia Desktop was simple and quick -- so quick that I almost didn't even know it installed. The only clue was a new status bar icon in the desktop tray. Clicking on the tray icon pulls up the user interface.

The UI has 7 tabs with a handful of configuration options on each. Interface options were clearly labeled, readily understandable in most cases without any additional reading. If you need more help, just click on the Help button provided on each configuration screen. There were a few minor bugs in the interface, but none that I couldn't immediately figure out.

34

The firewall comes with four defining Protection Levels carried over from the product's BlackICE origins: Paranoid, to block all unsolicited inbound traffic; Nervous, to block most unsolicited inbound traffic; Cautious, to block some unsolicited inbound traffic; and Trusting, which allows all inbound traffic.

www.portablecomputingmag.com

The default setting is Nervous. It allows Internet and Windows NetBIOS sharing by default, but disabling each setting is as easy as removing the check mark. You can configure visual and audio indications for blocked traffic as well as get a visual indication when the service is stopped.

All host-based firewalls are subject to unauthorized stops in the firewall service. Typically, this is done accidentally by any user with administrative permissions and privileges or maliciously by a buffer overflow or executed malware program. Proventia Desktop protects itself from both: It prevents unauthorized changes to agent files and service shutdowns, asking for a password before the agent can be reconfigured or disabled. Additionally, the administrator can choose for all network traffic, inbound and outbound, to be blocked if the agent is stopped (i.e. fail secure). The firewall's exception rules are standard. You can block by port or all ports, IP protocol number (UDP, TCP, etc.), IP address, or traffic direction (inbound, outbound, or both), and you can choose to accept or reject particular traffic. One interesting twist is the ability to set the future duration of the rule by hour, day, month, or forever, which is the default.

You should enable outbound Application Control, which is not turned on by default. You can choose the default behavior -- let it connect, prompt before allowing, prevent connection, or terminate

application -- to implement when an unknown or modified application attempts to connect to the network. These same options are used in defining firewall rules, and you may define additional known applications along with the assigned behavior.

To definite an application, you use a path statement or MD5 hash value. Path statements can use system variables and the normal wildcard characters. Many host-based firewalls allow you to block applications, but Proventia Desktop also allows you to terminate the offending program, a setting that could be useful in putting down unauthorized programs and malware.

Unfortunately, over 180 default exceptions are automatically allowed out even when Application Control is enabled. These include many programs that use network services to communicate out, default Windows applications (such as explorer.exe, rdpclip.exe), and various antivirus vendor files. Direct network connections to these excepted applications can be blocked, but if another process attempts to communicate on the network by using an API hook or call into the same application, that application will be able to use the network through that application regardless of the setting in Application Control. This can be used by malware to bypass the firewall. (Users can examine the default exceptions stored as a commadelimited file stored in the Proventia home directory.) It would be nice if ISS listed the default exceptions in the GUI and also allowed these exceptions to be easily removed.

Vertical Communications has rolled a telephone, router, firewall and wireless access point into a single package

Voice-over-IP (VoIP) phones offer plenty of attractive options for small businesses, but they also represent a headache for IT departments that have to work them in with existing networks. Vertical Communications is trying to change that with the Xcelerator IP phone it introduced on Monday, a telephone, router, firewall and wireless access point in one package. The company claims the Xcelerator IP is easier to set up and maintain than a traditional VoIP system, and cheaper than buying

35

www.portablecomputingmag.com

a separate device to perform every one of its functions separately.

As a wide area network, it can support up to eight VoIP SIP trunk connections via a single WAN/RJ45 port and three FXO PSTN trunk connections. As a local area network, it includes one FXS port, four 10/100 ethernet ports, and an integrated 802.11g wireless access point. The phone itself is designed

for business use, and comes with four dedicated line buttons, four soft buttons for different call-handling functions, and a large LCD that displays call status. The integrated voicemail can record up to four hours, and given an analog phone connection, the Xcelerator IP will automatically fall back to it for 911 calls or in the event of power failure.

The Xcelerator IP is available immediately, but no price was mentioned on the product Web page or in the accompanying press release.

Spammers use new technique to evade filters

Spammers have stepped up efforts to use encrypted attachments to evade filtering systems, service provider Email Systems has reported. Free IT resource

The technique relies on the fact that many spam systems can't scan inside e-mails containing encrypted or password-protected attachment, and work out that they are not legitimate. Without a rule to block such attachments, most systems will pass on the e-mail to recipients, handing spammers an important victory in the battle to get spam through.

Greg Miller of Email Systems. The company had quarantined hundreds of thousands of copies of attachment spam, up from levels a tenth this volume some months ago.

In recent weeks, Email Systems detected a small but steady stream of such spam emanating from bot-compromised hosts, containing a zipped-up version of the pervasive 'Storm' bot-loading Trojan that plagued Internet users in January. Recipients would have been able to inadvertently unzip the Trojan using an embedded password, after being attracted by a number of eye-catching subject lines, including 'Worm Detected!', 'Virus Detected!', 'Spyware Alert!' and 'Warning!'

Although the technique has been around for some months, spammers appear to be stepping up their attempts to use it, said

"We have moved on from spam being just a guy sending out huge amounts of spam," said Miller. The vast bulk of spam was now automated via bots, and this made finding new infection methods even more critical to the spam economy. "Every six months or so we see a new attack that is very successful," he said. As anti-spam systems adapted to popular techniques such as image spam, criminals were having to look further to engineer spam stealthiness.

37

The easiest means of detecting the current encrypted file attacks would be the attachment's filesize, 77KB, but this could be varied in future attacks quite easily. The best approach was simply to disallow encrypted e-mails to pass through the system at all. www.portablecomputingmag.com

Typology of Information Communication Technology Users U.S. adults fall into 10 attitudinal groups regarding the information and communication technology (ICT) each person uses. That's according to "A Typology of Information and Communication Technology Users," a report released by Pew Internet & American Life Project.

The report finds 85 percent of American adults use the Internet, a cell phone, or both. Those who "exploit the connectivity, the capacity for self expression, and the interactivity of modern information technology" comprise 8 percent of American adults, while half of adults maintain a more distant relationship with ICT. Ten distinct groups emerge in study's findings. Four groups embrace technology or find it takes up a large part of their lives. Eighty percent of these four groups combined have high-speed Internet access at home, twice the national average.

A group classified as "omnivores" comprises 8 percent of American adults. They have an appetite for gadgets and services, and are more likely to participate in Web 2.0 activities. They're 70 percent male, and 53 percent of them are between 18 and 29 years old.

38

"We found a younger, technology-oriented group, the group loves technology and is using it as a platform for creativity," said John Horrigan, associate director for research at Pew Internet & American Life Project.

www.portablecomputingmag.com

Connectors (7 percent) frequently use the Internet and feature-packed cell phones to connect to people and keep on top of digital content. Connectors are 55 percent female; 54 percent are between 30 and 49. In addition to managing career and family, ICT devices aid this group in work with community groups and the pursuit of hobbies.

The group classified as "lackluster veterans" (8 percent) is jaded after an average 10 years online. This group is 65 percent male, and predominantly (51 percent) between 30 and 49 years old. While lackluster veterans are frequent users of the Web, and cell phones to a lesser degree, they don't se ICT as a tool to enhance productivity. The group has "come to a well-learned sense of how they feel about information technology," said Horrigan.

Productivity enhancers (8 percent) maintain strongly positive views about the use of technology to enhance their work and social lives. Productivity enhancers are evenly split between male and female, falling predominantly in the 30 to 49 year-old age group (51 percent).

The remaining 49 percent of American adults fall into low-tech groups. Only 14 percent of the segment has a broadband connection at home. Another group is "off the network" (15 percent), unconnected by Web or cell phone. The "off the grid" population is predominantly female (57 percent) with a median age of 64; 50 percent are 65 or older. Three additional groups include the "inexperienced experimenters" (8 percent); "light but satisfied" (15 percent); and "indifferents" (11 percent). These three groups combined have a median age range between 47 and 53. The findings were based on a daily tracking survey on Americans' use of the Internet. Telephone interviews of 4,001 adults age 18 and older were conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International between February and April of 2006.

The middle-range of connected individuals are classified as "mobile centrics" (10 percent), and the "connected but hassled" (10 percent). The mobile group has slightly more men (52 percent), and skews younger than other groups; 40 percent are between 18 and 29. The connected but hassled segment is 59 percent female, most of the group is between 30 and 49 (45 percent).

Advances in VoIP and Feature-Rich Options Drive the Growth of Global Audio Conferencing Bridge Systems Markets

The Global audio conferencing bridge systems market has made significant strides in the last year, driven primarily by the increasing prevalence of audio conferencing, uptake of advanced collaboration features and additional growth in the emerging markets and the enterprise arena. There is a renewed focus on enhancing audio conference bridges to better meet the needs of both service providers and enterprise vendors. This focus has led to innovative and exciting new offerings of audio conference bridge systems.

If you are interested in a virtual brochure, which provides manufacturers, end users, and other industry participants with an overview of the latest analysis of the World Audio Conferencing Bridge Systems Markets, then send an e-mail to Tracy Henderson, Corporate Communications, at [email protected] with your full name, company name, title, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address. Upon receipt of the above information, an overview will be sent to you by e-mail.

47

"One of the key trends driving the audio conferencing bridge systems markets is the move towards Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), driven by the promise of cost savings and the ability to integrate it into other applications," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Doreen Natukunda. "The enterprise market is increasingly embracing VoIP, and as a result, there is growing demand from new clients looking to purchase audio conferencing bridge products and services."

www.portablecomputingmag.com

With VoIP gaining traction, more and more organizations continue to replace their voice conferencing infrastructure with VoIP to utilize the additional bandwidth to carry audio conferencing bridge systems. The move toward VoIP is expected to continue throughout the business market and reach a mature market cycle in the next 5-7 years.

However, competition continues from other market participants vying to pocket a slice of the audio conferencing bridge customer base. The convergence of collaboration tools means that there exist many more options that employ voice as part of the applications offered to customers. For the business community, this provides more choice, but for the audio conferencing bridge systems manufacturers, this means lower price per port options. "As competition continues to increase among the different segments of voice conferencing markets, it is imperative that vendors for both service providers and enterprise vendors continue to expand their features and services in their respective markets," says Natukunda. "For this reason, superior features, services, and partnerships to go along with the audio conferencing bridge applications will strengthen vendors in this market."

Going forward, audio conferencing bridge systems makers must continuously strive to make the use of bridges as effortless as possible with maximum efficiency, ease-of-use and intuitive features. This will enable the promotion of additional call usage, ultimately translating to time and cost savings for information technology managers.

World Audio Conferencing Bridge Systems Markets is part of the Conferencing and Collaboration Subscription, which also includes research in the following markets: video conferencing, web conferencing, unified communications, and audio conferencing. All research included in subscriptions provide detailed market opportunities and industry trends that have been evaluated following extensive interviews with market participants. Interviews with the press are available.

Skype extends to the handset

Using the internet to make voice calls can be a great way to slash phone bills but for some being tethered to a computer remains a cumbersome way to talk cheap.

require less hardware than voice over internet protocol (VoIP) networks, that are usually offered by broadband internet providers such as TPG and iiNet in Australia.

However, there is a growing range of products that lets users make and receive voice calls on internet phone services like Skype on conventional handsets.

Most users prefer to use a headset when talking on the service.

Since it hit the ether four years ago, Skype has become a serious alternative mode of communication for about 170 million users around the world. The service allows anyone with a computer and a fast internet connection to talk to any other Skype user anywhere around the world for free. The system has expanded to allow users to both make and receive calls to and from regular mobile and landline telephones at very competitive rates. Skype and similar products such as Google Talk generally Netgear SPH200D

To use Skype on a PC, you will require at a minimum a set of speakers and a microphone, which can be easily purchased for around $30 from any electronics store.

But for those who want cheap calls but prefer the ease and comfort of a traditional cordless handset, there are a number of products that allow users to employ the technology away from the PC.

Netgear offers its cordless dual mode SPH200D handset, which can make and receive both Skype and landline calls.

By connecting to a broadband router, the device can make Skype calls without needing a PC interface. For regular landline calls, the unit simply links into the copper phone line wall jack.

The Philips VOIP 321 and the Linksys CIT400 also allow both Skype and landline calls.

Netgear also offers a wireless mobile handset that allows Skype calls from any wireless hotspot. While the device may appeal to those looking to cut their mobile expenses, it could be a while before Australia's wireless internet infrastructure matches the coverage provided by regular GSM or 3G mobile networks.

49

www.portablecomputingmag.com

Bjarne Munch, an analyst with Gartner, says that while internet

phone options are undoubtedly cheaper, customers need to weigh the savings they make on their phone bills against the costs of high speed broadband.

"You subscribe to a broadband service whether you pay ADSL, wireless or mobile where you pay for the broadband usage," Mr Munch said.

"The telephony is just an application that is using the broadband service."

And while the prices may seem attractive, users should be aware of some of the drawbacks of relying on a broadband connection as a primary telecommunications service.

Unlike mainline carriers that have a number of redundancies in the event of network failures, many broadband services can struggle during peak periods and are subject to regular maintenance outages. Also, many internet voice communications services do not work during power failures and are unable to connect users with emergency service numbers.

And analysts agree that until Australian broadband speeds catch up with those of the rest of the developed world, users will not be able to appreciate the full benefits of the technology.

Reliable service is fundamental to customer loyalty, and Verizon Wireless boasts the highest customer loyalty in the industry. During the fourth quarter of 2006, only 1.14 percent of its customers disconnected their service, a figure well below the industry average.

“The value we offer our customers is closely tied to our industry-leading customer retention,” Tang said. “Wireless consumers today understand that value is not defined by price alone. A major reason our customers choose

Verizon Wireless and stay with us is because we offer the nation’s most reliable network.”

This new cell site in Huber Heights is part of Verizon Wireless’ continual effort to expand coverage, increase capacity and enhance the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Ohio and throughout the country. Verizon Wireless has invested $35 billion in the last seven years—$5 billion on average every year since the company was formed— to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. More than $195 million of this investment was spent in Ohio in 2006.

The new cell site increases network capacity and improves in-building coverage from U.S. Route 40 south to Longford Road and from Bellefontaine Road west to Wildcat Road. Verizon Wireless customers visiting Carriage Hill Metropark, Huber Heights Shullgate Park and Gary Sherman and Rushmore city parks also will benefit from these improvements.

In addition to providing the core video processing technologies, Motorola will provide integration and project management for all headend components, including conditional access, multiplexing and set-top testing. Motorola is using its MPEG-4 advanced video codec (AVC) to deliver video content to subscribers via Radio Frequency (RF) set top boxes.

At the edge of the network, Motorola’s Astria video services processor will convert the IP channels to digital RF for delivery over coax or the MMDS network, depending upon location. As a result, customers in RC Technologies’ service area will now have more choice in video service providers.
