Morgan’s Last Chug is a study on layered temporality, a multifaceted look at the experience of passing time, through both the choreographic and the audible. Through a series of relentless variations, using different modalities of time related composition, the dancers explore dance as an inherently musical practice, bringing forth its temporal aspects and mechanisms. Beckett’s compelling monologue from “Krapp’s last tape”, in itself a theatrical counterpoint between live and recorded text, highlights the innumerable ways in which the human experience is inhabited and highlighted by passing time.

Morgan’s Last Chug est une étude sur le temps fragmenté. Un regard multidimensionnel porté sur le temps qui passe, par le prisme de la chorégraphie et de l’environnement sonore. À travers une succession ininterrompue de variations qui utilisent différentes modalités de composition liées au temps, les danseurs explorent la danse comme une pratique musicale en soi, faisant émerger ses aspects temporels et ses mécanismes. Le fascinant monologue de Beckett, extrait de la pièce Krapp’s Last Tape (La Dernière Bande), qui est un contrepoint théâtral entre représentation sur scène et enregistrement sonore, souligne les innombrables façons dont l’expérience humaine est habitée et mise en relief par le temps qui passe.

Benjamin Millepied

Born in France, Benjamin Millepied began his dance training at the age of eight with his mother, Catherine Flori, a former modern dancer. From the age of thirteen to the age of sixteen he attended the Conservatoire National de Lyon, studying with Marie France Dieulevin and Michel Rahn. In the summer of 1992, Mr. Millepied came to New York City to attend the summer program at the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet. The following year, he became a full-time student at the school, having received the “Bourse Lavoisier,” a scholarship award from the French Ministry. At SAB he studied with Stanley Williams and Adam Luders. In the 1994 SAB Spring Workshop, Mr. Millepied originated a principal role in Jerome Robbins’2 & 3 Part Inventions, set to music by J.S Bach. He was awarded the “Prix de Lausanne” the same year. In his last year at SAB, Mr. Millepied received the Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise and was invited to become a member of New York City Ballet. In the spring of 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Principal Dancer at NYCB, where he remained until his retirement as a dancer in 2011. With the New York City Ballet, Mr. Millepied danced a vast repertoire of works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. Many original roles were also created for him by Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins, Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Angelin Preljocaj, and Mauro Bigonzetti. Mr. Millepied started choreographing in 2001, and in 2002 he founded “Danses Concertantes”. The company gathered different dancers for each tour, and for over 8 years performed new works and ballet

repertory in prestigious venues all over the world. From 2006 to 2007, Mr. Millepied was choreographer-in-residence at the Baryshnikov Arts Center. During his time at BAC, Mr. Millepied created the solo “Years Later” for Mikhail Baryshnikov. In 2007, he received the United States Artists Wynn Fellowship. In 2010, he was made Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture. Mr. Millepied’s many ballets are in the repertory of major dance companies around the world including the New York City Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Mariinsky Ballet, and the Lyon Opera Ballet. His collaborators include composers and artists such as Nico Muhly, David Lang, Philip Glass, Christopher Wool, Barbara Kruger, Paul Cox, Rodarte, Thierry Escaich, Santiago Calatrava, Daniel Buren. Mr. Millepied also works in film, both as a choreographer and as a director. In 2013, Millepied founded the Amoveo Company with composer Nicholas Britell. Amoveo is an artist collective, collaborating in digital media, live events, television and film. In 2010, Mr. Millepied choreographed and starred in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. In 2012, Mr. Millepied moved to Los Angeles, where he conceived and founded the new dance company L.A. Dance Project. L.A. Dance Project’s mission is to promote new collaborative works by emerging and established artists, and to revisit influential multidisciplinary dance collaborations from the past. The company creates innovative platforms for contemporary dance and expands the experience of dance and dance education to audiences of all ages. In January 2013 the Paris Opera Ballet announced Mr. Millepied’s appointment as its new Director, a role he assumed in the fall of 2014.

Emanuel Gat was born in Israel in 1969. His first encounter with dance was at the age of 23 during a workshop led by Israeli choreographer Nir Ben Gal. A few months later he joined the Liat Dror Nir Ben Gal Company and toured internationally with them. He started working as an independent choreographer in 1994. Ten years later Emanuel founded his company Emanuel Gat Dance at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv, where he has created several pieces. Winter Voyage (2004) and The Rite of Spring (2004) won a Bessy Award; K626 in 2006 and 3for2007 in 2007, before choosing to settle in France, at the Maison Intercommunale de la Danse in Istres. Silent Ballet (2008) was the first piece created in France, followed by Winter variations in 2009 and Brilliant Corners in 2011. In 2013, Emanuel Gat was associated artist to the Montpellier Danse Festival for which the company developed the project « Up Close Up » proposing two new works: The Goldlandbergs and Corner Etudes, a photographic installation “It’s people, how abstract can it get ?” and a choreographic event « Danses de Cour ». In 2014, he created Plage Romantique, a one-hour piece for 9 dancers in the Agora courtyard for the 34th edition of the Festival Montpellier Danse. Emanuel is regularly invited to present his work and create new choreographies for dance companies around the world including: The Paris Opera Ballet, Sydney Dance Company, Tanztheater Bremen, Le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, Ballet de Marseille, The Royal Swedish Ballet, Polish National Ballet, Ballet de Lorraine and Cedar Lake among others.

Roderick Murray has been designing lighting and installations for performance both nationally and internationally since 1989. The majority of his work has been with dance and music , both experimental and traditional, and experimental operas. His designs have been seen throughout the world, most recently in collaboration with Ralph Lemon at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Murray’s primary and most challenging collaborations since 2001 have been designing the environments and lighting in all of the work by New York based choreographer Kimberly Bartosik. He is currently the main lighting designer for the Los Angeles Dance Project (LADP). His designs for Benjamin Millepied before joining LADP include over a dozen world premieres at venues in Europe and the U.S. including for NYCB, ABT, Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Lyon Opèra Ballet and others.

In 2006 he designed the lighting for Sekou Sundiata’s epic 51st Dream State at BAM. In 2008 he was invited to design the lighting for Paul Simon’s Songs from the Capeman, at BAM. He designed a premiere for Hot Mouth at the Peacock Theater at the West End in London in 1996. He collaborates regularly with Dusan Tynek, and Melinda Ring and he has also designed the lighting for Yanira Castro, Yasuko Yokoshi, Tim Fain, Ethel, Luca Veggetti, Wally Cardona, Morphoses, Ballett Dortmund, ABTII, Donna Uchizono, Paradigm, Scotty Heron, Pepatian, Risa Jaroslow and Dancers, Bill Young and Dancers, Ricochet Dance, and many others.

Christopher Wool

Christopher Wool was born in Chicago in 1955 and moved to NewYork in the 1970s. Since the mid-1980s, Wool’s work has been the subject of numerous international gallery and museum exhibitions, including a survey of his work at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles in 1998. In 2013, the Guggenheim Museum in New York presented a major retrospective of his work.

Né à Chicago en 1955, Christopher Wool s’est établi à New York dans les années 1970. Liam Gillick

Liam Gillick is an artist based in New York. Following his studies in Fine Art at Goldsmiths’ College 1987 he held his first solo exhibition at Karsten Schubert Gallery in London in 1989. Gillick’s work has subsequently been included in numerous important exhibitions including Documenta and the Venice and Berlin Biennales. Solo museum exhibitions have taken place at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate in London. Gillick’s work is held in many important public collections including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, The Guggenheim Museum in New York and Bilbao and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Over the last twenty five years Gillick has also been a prolific writer and critic of contemporary art – contributing to Artforum, October, Frieze and e-flux Journal. He is the author of a number of books including a volume of his selected critical writing. High profile public works include the British Government Home Office (Interior Ministry) building in London and the Lufthansa Headquarters in Frankfurt. Throughout this time Gillick has extended his practice into experimental venues and collaborative projects with artists including Philippe Parreno, Lawrence Weiner and Louise Lawler.

À la fin de ses études en beaux-arts au Goldsmiths’ College, en 1987, il présente sa première exposition solo à la Karsten Schubert Gallery de Londres, en 1989. Par la suite, il présente ses créations dans de nombreuses expositions importantes, notamment à Documenta et aux biennales de Venise et de Berlin. Il fait des expositions solos dans plusieurs musées, notamment au Museum of Contemporary Art de Chicago, au Museum of Modern Art de New York et à la Tate Gallery de Londres. Les œuvres de Gillick figurent dans de nombreuses collections publiques importantes, notamment au Centre Pompidou à Paris, aux musées Guggenheim de New York et de Bilbao, et au Museum of Modern Art de New York. Depuis 25 ans, Gillick est un auteur prolifique et critique d’art contemporain – ses écrits sont parus dans Artforum, October, Frieze et e-flux Journal. Il a publié plusieurs livres, dont un recueil de certains de ses essais critiques. Ses œuvres publiques les plus connues sont installées dans l’immeuble du British Government Home Office (ministère de l’Intérieur) à Londres et au siège social de la Lufthansa, à Francfort. Parallèlement, Gillick continue à travailler dans des lieux expérimentaux et de participer à des projets collectifs avec des artistes tels Philippe Parreno, Lawrence Weiner et Louise Lawler.

Mission L.A. Dance Project promotes new collaborative work by emerging and established artists and revisits influential multidisciplinary dance collaborations from the past. It creates innovative platforms for contemporary dance and expands the experience of dance and dance education to audiences of all ages.

Van Cleef & Arpels is proud to support L.A. Dance Project / La Maison Van Cleef & Arpels est fière d’appuyer le L.A. Dance Project Van Cleef & Arpels has a long-standing relationship with the world of dance, music and art. In 1967, George Balanchine, founder of the New York City Ballet, where Benjamin Millepied was a long time principal dancer, met Claude Arpels. This meeting turned into a life-long friendship which climaxed with the creation of the ballet Jewels inspired by the rubies, emeralds and diamonds of Van Cleef & Arpels’ jewelry. Since that time, the Maison has continued to support the art of dance through special performances and educational programming.

Van Cleef & Arpels entretient depuis longtemps des relations avec le monde de la danse, de la musique et de l’art. En 1967, George Balanchine, fondateur du New York City Ballet, dont Benjamin Millepied a longtemps été le danseur étoile, rencontre Claude Arpels.
