As lobbies go, the Edition’s is pretty impressive: a soaring, grandly stuccoed room that would make Downton seem pokey. It’s grown-up and luxurious, with a certain insouciant cool – a mood that persists in our walnut-panelled loft suite. It ticks the usual boxes (palatial tub; iPod dock; vast, snowy bed) and a few more besides, from chic Le Labo toiletries to a stack of glossy magazines. Next morning, after latenight libations in the Punch Room, we recover over breakfast in Berners Tavern; the perfect avocado and poached egg on toast, served in gloriously stately surrounds.
It’s saying something that even the presence of the world’s creepiest seven-year-old boy couldn’t blight our stay at this ritzy resort with a breathtaking natural backdrop. ‘Damien’, as we nicknamed him, glared at us menacingly while we basked by the vast outdoor pool and dined on gourmet Mediterranean fare at Faventia (one of Terre Blanche’s four restaurants). Luckily, he was persona non grata at the golf course, the spa, as well as our sweet villasuites with private terrace. But don’t go feeling too sorry for the demonic tyke; he had the whole of the fabulous Kids’ Club to run riot in.
Always on the cusp of kitsch, this place never wholly succumbs. The retro palm-print fabrics and rattan lampshades pay homage to 60s LA, but are artfully offset by a touch of Parisian minimalism. Sip a cocktail in the bar before making for your room, armed with a selection of magazines, to curl up in a welcoming and stylishly appointed nest. In the morning, the most Parisian of breakfasts will be there to cushion the blow: coffee, fruit juice and fresh, flaky pastries. This peaceful little spot in one of the hipper parts of Paris is well worth a sojourn for a few lounge-loving evenings.

En matière de hall d’hôtel, l’Edition fait fort : haut de plafond, grandiose avec moulures, il ferait passer Downton Abbey pour un placard. C’est mature et luxueux avec une certaine nonchalance, qui se retrouve dans notre suite loft aux lambris de noyer. Les luxes habituels sont là (baignoire princière, dock à iPod, grand lit immaculé) et quelques autres, des chics produits de bain Le Labo à la pile de magazines. Le lendemain, après des libations tardives à la Punch Room, nous récupérons au petit déjeuner à Berners Tavern : avocat sur toast parfait dans un cadre grandiose.
Même la présence d’un mioche de 7 ans déplaisant n’a pas terni notre séjour dans cet établissement chic dans un cadre naturel sublime. C’est dire... « Damien », comme nous l’avons surnommé, ne nous a pas lâchés de son regard menaçant, alors que nous paressions au bord de la piscine et dégustions les mets méditerranéens proposés par le Faventia (l’un des quatre restaurants). Heureusement, il n’avait pas accès au golf, au spa ni à nos belles suites-villas avec terrasse privative. Ne plaignez pas trop le pauvre gamin: il a pu mettre le Kids’ Club à feu et à sang.
Flirtant avec le kitsch à tous les étages, cette adresse n’y consent pourtant jamais tout à fait. La déco tropicale importée du Los Angeles des années 60 (abat-jours en rotin, rideaux fleuris) choque gentiment le minimalisme parisien. Après un cocktail au bar, on s’empare d’une sélection de magazines, et on se délecte d’une pause dans son nid confortable, en attendant Morphée. Le petit déjeuner, parisien par excellence, assure un atterrissage en douceur. Cet îlot tranquille au milieu du Paris branché mérite bien que l’on s’y attarde pour quelques nuits bleu curaçao.
