PC : Polycarbonate
PS : Polystyrene
A high performance plastic which can be produced as a transparent material making it perfect for goggle lenses. Its outstanding impact resistance means PC is also used for riot shields and car headlights.
Available in various forms including General Purpose (GPPS) and Expanded (EPS). GPPS is low cost, rigid and brittle - its most common use is in compact disc cases. EPS is formed by adding air into the polystyrene.
CP : Cellulose Proprionate
EVA : Ethylene Vinyl Acetate
A tough material which is available in a variety of translucent colours and can be easily curved when hot - ideal properties for the lenses in SpeedoBioFUSETM and SoftFrame goggles.
Sharing many of its properties with rubber, EVA is often used in shoe soles due to its flexibility and high friction coefficient.
TPR : ThermoPlastic Rubber
ABS : Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Sytrene
Developed as a synthetic alternative to rubber, TPR contains no natural rubber (latex). Now used as the comfortable frame/seal in the majority of our SoftFrame range, and in all SpeedoBioFUSETM goggles.
Latex
TPE : ThermoPlastic Elastomer Similar to TPR in most ways, certain grades of TPE differ in their chemical construction which can make them more suited for bonding to other plastics.
TPU : ThermoPlastic Polyurethane See description for PU.
Materials
PE : Polyethylene Commonly available in two variants; High Density (HDPE) and Low Density (LDPE). High density variants can be processed to be flexible, whereas low density compositions tend to be semi-rigid with very low levels of water absorption. Both variants show good chemical resistance making them ideal for use in chlorinated pools.
PU : Polyurethane A flexible, elastic material with good wear resistance. Used in numerous products, from shoe soles to skateboard wheels.
PVC : Poly Vinyl Chloride
High-quality plastic which is tough and rigid and can be easily engineered to produce products with a high gloss finish.
Natural rubber is brittle and can be easily torn. In processes or refined forms such as vulcanized rubber or latex, the material becomes much more elastic and so suited for use in swim caps.
Silicone (Compression Moulded) Used as the base material for many of our swim caps, goggle seals and straps. This variant of silicone is a solid block of material in its base form, and is processed using pressure and heat to give an end product which is soft, flexible and elastic. Silicone is often a good material for people with sensitive skin.
Silicone (Liquid Injection) The best grade of silicone in our product range, it is used for seals and straps on certain SpeedoBioFUSETM goggles and in our premium scuba products. Liquid silicone is a refined, more expensive grade of silicone and is injection moulded to produce very precise components. Its composition and soft feel make it a choice for people with sensitive skin.
Miscellaneous Technical Information Anti-Fog
PP : Polypropylene
Misting or fogging on the lens of a swimming goggle is caused by the difference in temperature between the cold of the water and the warm skin of the swimmer. This temperature difference causes a thin film of water vapour to build-up on the inside surface of the lens, which restricts visibility.
A tough yet flexible material (called ‘semi-rigid’ in the plastics’ world), the chemical properties of PP mean it can be engineered to bond with other types of plastic. For this reason it is used as the structural plastic in SpeedoBioFUSETM equipment.
To stop this occurring, we apply a hydrophobic (‘waterhating’) solution to the inner surface of the goggle lens. The hydrophobic formula repels the water vapour from the lens surface which stops the mist or fog from forming.
One of the first widely available plastics, and still widely used in everyday products. PVC is available as a rigid or flexible material in a wide variety of colours.

The anti-fog process is carried out in a special clean-room within the production facility. On Speedo goggles with PC lenses, a precise amount of anti-fog solution is applied to the inner surface of the lens. The lens is then moved into a high-temperature cabinet where the solution forms a hard coating on the lens.
Antifog Ultra SpeedoBioFUSETM and SoftFrame goggles are fitted with CP lenses, and feature Antifog Ultra technology. In a standard lens the anti-fog coating is applied to the surface of the lens. On Speedo goggles with Antifog Ultra the hydrophobic solution is impregnated into the lens. This technology is superior to standard anti-fog lenses as the hydrophobic layer cannot be accidentally wiped off over a long period of use, or by a sharp object.
Mirror Coating The reflective coating on our mirror goggle lenses is achieved through a process called vacuum deposition. The lenses are placed in a vacuum chamber where a gas of metallic particles is applied to the lens, creating the thin mirror film on the outside surface of the lens. The mirror coating helps to reduce glare and lower the rate of light transmission through the lens, and so is ideal for bright conditions or outdoor swimming. Performance swimmers often choose mirror lenses to race in as the reflective coating stops the opposition seeing their eyes, possibly giving them a psychological advantage!
Phthalates Phthalates are added to PVC in order to make it soft and pliable. In some poor-quality products which use inferior PVC the levels and types of phthalates used can be dangerous. PVC is only used for Speedo armbands, and is tested to meet strict requirements – in addition to any legal standards we also conform to Pentland Brands Restricted Substances Policy, which is often more stringent! Furthermore, all appropriate products comply to the newly introduced EU Directive 76/769 EEC which control the levels of phthalates allowable in children’s products.

All About Lenses
The Speedo goggle range uses a range of materials, colours, filters and finishes to ensure that we offer a lens to suit every swimmer, and every environment.

Popular all-purpose lens colour that reduces the light transmission to the eye, lowering the overall brightness without excessive colour distortion.

Offer the best contrast for objects against a green or blue background, making them a good choice for outdoor use.
UV Protection Ultraviolet rays, more commonly known as UV rays, are widely recognised as the most harmful of the sun’s rays. Our lenses are moulded from special grades of plastic which contain compounds that absorb ultraviolet light. This means UV filtering is a standard feature of all Speedo lenses, no matter what colour you choose. Light Transmission Light transmission is a measure of how much of the light which hits a lens is allowed to pass through it and enter the eye. Generally speaking, the darker the lens the lower the level of light transmission. This is why a smoke lens colour, with its low light transmission, is ideal for reducing brightness on sunny days. Lens Colours Lens colours are chosen by swimmers for many reasons. Some choose a lens based on its performance characteristics, others simply because the colour co-ordinates with their swimsuit. Many elite swimmers race in mirrored goggles as there is a perceived psychological advantage of not allowing other competitors to see your eyes!

Virtually eliminates blue from the colour spectrum, making everything seem sharp and bright. Ideal for indoor use.
Specific colour of lens which sharpens vision. A high level of protection against UVA, UVB and harmful blue rays.
Most mirror goggles are based on a smoke lens, however mirror coatings can be added to any lens colour. The lens retains its normal properties with the mirror finish helping to reduce brightness and glare. The mirror coating is an extremely fine layer of metal particles which is baked onto the lens surface to give a hard finish. By changing the colour of the metal particles we can change the colour of the mirror. Through adding several colours of particles in a controlled order we can create multicolour mirrors as found on Mariner Mirror or Swedish Mirror.
