Welcome to Deauville A L A I N P R I VAT
President of the Conference
This third edition of the Deauville meeting, on spinal cord injury – the first of the third millenium – is marked by the emergence in this field of new technologies: stem cells, transgenics, which provide new tools for basic research.
of innovative therapeutic strategies based on the one hand on more refined molecular and cellular analyses of pathophysiologi cal phenomena, and on the other hand on more appropriate and more predictive pre-clinical models.
In addition, the progress of imaging techniques, such as MRI, which can now be applied to small mammals, and which has acquired a functional dimension, are beginning to bridge the gap in between preclinical studies on laboratory mammals and clinical observations in humans.
The increasing number of research teams involved in this endeavour is a good omen. It is thus more necessary than ever that the best level of communication develops in between basic scientists and clinicians. This is the purpose and the expectation of this meeting.
It is expected that this first decade of the 21st century will witness the development
