From The Designee File (Contributed by Jack Denison, EAA Designee No. 115, of Stoneham, Mass.) How would you like to have a precision magneto timer for almost nothing and a couple hours time? Actually, you no doubt have most of the parts around the house now. A doorbell, an old radio or two and a few other small items can do it. With this timer you can check your timing at your mag switch while someone bumps the prop for you and checks the timing mark. This MAGNETO TIMEIR BV

certainly beats the .0015 shim or cigarette cellophane method. Left is a list of materials and a schematic is included for the timer. Mine is in a wooden box (prevents short circuiting), 4" x 8" x 2". When magneto breaker points are closed, current flows through the points to ground, not through the transformer, and the light bulb will not light. When the points open light comes on. With the two separate lights very close, synchronization can be accomplished and it is only necessary to time one mag to the engine. Remember, the mag switch must be on and therefore THE ENGINE

is HOT: MOVE THE PROP VERY SLOWLY WITH GAS AND MIXTURE OFF!

Keep that ignition system in top shape. It is the heartbeat of your engine.
