Sinarback digital backs produce razor-sharp images with excellent color fidelity. Thermoelectric cooling reduces noise to a minimum and 14-bit color depth is achieved in every color channel. This leads to a contrast range of more than 11 aperture stops. (Photo: Roland Schmid, Switzerland. Photographed with a Sinarback)

The Digital Image The change from chemical to digital imaging in professional photography took place quicker than originally imagined: The image is recorded with a digital storage medium and fed directly into a computer for further manipulation. Even though digital imaging technology is unlikely to replace film for very high resolution photography completely, today it is established in practically all segments of photography, including still life photography, catalog- and fashion photography. Even with moving subjects there are no limitations anymore. Basically, there are two different kinds of digital backs that can be used on a Sinar camera:

Digital backs with a CCD sensor array: Because of the short exposure times, basically all the usual light sources can be used (flash or continuous lighting). The relatively small CCD chip requires lenses with short focal lengths that must also have very high resolution. The Sinar product range now includes the special Sinaron Digital lenses that are capable of transferring the complete image information to the high pixel density of the CCD chip. Exposure parameters and color filtering are controlled in different ways, depending on the type of digital back that is being used (one- or multi-shot). For example, the Sinarcam 2 is used with the Sinarback (1- and 4-shot), whereas the Sinarcam 1 is used with the Leaf Volare (3-shot). But there are also digital backs with which one of the versions of the Sinar Expolux shutter is used.

Digital backs with a camera scanner: These scanners have three tightly aligned CCD arrays for the basic colors red, green and blue, so that only one scanning pass is required per exposure. Scanning takes a few minutes, therefore only continuous light can be used, such as halogen light, calibrated fluorescent light with daylight color balance or HMI light. For professional imaging, the following computer requirements apply: Apple Macintosh Power PC with OS 8.5 or higher, at least 256 MB RAM, graphic card with at least 4 MB VRAM (true color rendition), hard disk drive with at least 1 GB available storage space, 17″ or larger monitor, CD drive, output devices for filing and data exchange, such as a CD writer, Iomega Jaz or Iomega Zip interchangeable discs, Digital Video Discs (DVD), etc. If electronic image manipulation is also to be performed on the same computer, a faster processor is recommended, along with a 20″ (or larger) monitor and greater memory capacity. For the very best results with both imaging techniques, the highest demands are also placed on the camera and on the lenses. The cameras we recommend are the Sinar p2 as well as the Sinar x, which are well suited for this purpose, because of their precise adjustment capabilities and their sturdiness.

The Sinarcam 2 with the Sinarback Digital Back can be used as a compact studio camera and it can also be used in conjunction with the Sinar p2 (Sinar x) view cameras. These combinations produce high-quality color photographs of static subjects (4-shot) and also of dynamic subjects (1-shot).

The Sinarcam 1 with the Leaf Volare or the Leaf DCB-LV digital back can also be used as a compact studio camera and it can also be used in combination with the Sinar p2 camera system. Static subjects can be photographed in high-quality color and dynamic subjects can be captured in black-and-white. Upon request, also for Leaf 1-shot digital backs, the Sinarcam 3 is available (same as the Sinarcam 1 but without the filter wheel). For the compact versions of Sinar Digital Cameras, there is a special line of Sinaron Digital lenses designed for uncomplicated, efficient studio photography. The basic lens in that line is the 35 – 80 mm ƒ/2.8 Sinaron Digital Zoom Lens. In addition, lenses from Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Hasselblad and Mamiya can also be used, thus creating the broadest selection of lenses for a digital camera system. For professional Sinar Digital Cameras, Sinar offers the line of Sinaron Digital Lenses in DB Auto Aperture Mounts.

The compact studio cameras from Sinar are excellent choices for highly efficient work in regular studio photography:

Today, the Sinarback digital back on the Sinarcam 2 and the Sinar p2 are the ultimate professional working tools in the digital photography studio.

Digital photography not only produces detailed image information that can be utilized immediately, it also permits direct and exact controls of mumerous parameters right on the monitor. 4

Digital imaging techniques are becoming ever more important in photography. In certain categories, professional photographs made digitally have already surpassed those made with chemical film. The knowhow and the skill of the photographer continue to be as indispensable as they were before. Optical and physical imaging requirements remain unchanged. As before, it is important for the photographer to select the camera that is most appropriate for the respective task. Today Sinar offers a digital imaging system for demanding studio photography that integrates seamlessly into its proven Sinar view camera system and that can also be attached to medium format cameras: the Sinarback. Upgrading and the continued use of existing, well-proven accessories for the Sinar system are also safeguarded in digital photography. This open system constitutes an ideal foundation for the future as well. For chemical or for digital imaging media, Sinar offers precisely the right adaptations for its view cameras. In addition, the Sinarback can easily and quickly be attached to a medium format camera. Thanks to the livevideo focusing image, it is also readily possible to adapt the Sinarback to a Sinar x or a Sinar f camera. This provides the pho-

tographer with the greatest possible freedom in the choice of the right camera for the respective photographic task. With the Sinarcams and the Expolux shutter system, Sinar offers a solution for practically all applications in the field of view cameras. Even with scanner camera applications, for example, the Expolux shutter is

the ideal tool, regardless of whether continuous illumination or flash light is being used. The Sinarcams can be used as computer-controlled cameras on the Sinar p2 view camera and they can also be used on their own as compact solutions. With its fully automatic shutter- and aperture controls, the Sinarcam lets the photographer work where he can best devote himself to the composition and the exposure of the photograph: behind the camera, at the screen. Furthermore, it permits the use of a wide range of 35 mm, medium- and view camera lenses. This also makes it possible to use digital photography in extreme wideangle situations. The relatively small CCD area sensors used in digital photography require especially high precision in focusing the image in order to achieve optimal sharpness. Sinar cameras are well equipped for these requirements, at the same time offering the greatest ease of operation. In the field of digital photography too, Sinar remains faithful to its policy of providing the highest quality and efficiency, at the same time enabling you to obtain everything from the same trusted source.

Sinar CaptureShop™ Extract optimal results from the digital sensor From the very beginning, Sinar has opted for the ultra-modern Philips sensor with Bayer pattern in the Sinarback. But it is the active cooling of the sensor and Sinar CaptureShop™ software for the Sinarback that extract the very best image results from the sensor.

Philosophy The Sinar CaptureShop™ software is the “mission control center” of every Sinarback digital back. In the design of this imaging software, major emphasis was placed on retro-compatibility, among other factors, and on a clear and user-friendly structure. The user surface, for instance, was divided into three modules tailored to the workflow: exposure, processing and export. Client wishes are continually being incorporated into the meticulously organized user surface, and overall online help is, of course, available as well. The latest version of Sinar CaptureShop™ software can be downloaded from the internet address www.captureshop.com at any time, free of charge. It is a matter of course that new software versions continue to support the functions of older versions. Protecting your investment through retro-compatibility: that is typical of Sinar.

User surface made to measure There are two options for the installation of Sinar CaptureShop™ software: a simple

standard installation (Easy Install) and a customized installation (Custom Install). Starting with version 2.0, Sinar CaptureShop™ contains many small additional modules or plug-ins. With the customized type of installation, the user can select the additional software plug-ins that are to be installed. The latter may also be added at a later date and unwanted plug-ins can be removed at any time. This plug-in structure enables the photographer to create a user surface that satisfies his Individual needs and preferences. The various plug-in configurations can, by the way, be individually stored and activated for every user of the work station. Furthermore, global settings as well as settings for the exposure-, processing- and export modules can be stored and activated individually.

Pixel-accurate focusing With a Sinarback on a Sinar view camera or on a medium format camera, focusing the image with the live-video monitor is remarkably easy and convenient. There is no need for a costly and complicated sliding adapter on the view camera. And in place of a small, chip-sized image on the focusing screen, the photographer is able to compose and focus his image very comfortably on the monitor, just like he was used to doing it on a view camera: with a large image. Using the magnifier function, he is able to select a section for focusing with pixel accuracy. The live-video focusing

Thanks to the large video focusing image, it is easy and very convenient to focus the picture when using the Sinarback, either on a Sinar view camera or on a medium format camera.

image can be set for color or for black-andwhite for greater contrast.

Optimal 1-Shot-Interpolation Regardless of the camera system being used for making them, 1-shot color images have to be interpolated. For optimal results with 1-shot images, interpolation with Quality A is available. In certain situations, however, a somewhat lower quality is acceptable, which has the advantage of greater speed. For these cases, Quality B is available for faster interpolation and a quick formation of the image with sufficiently good export quality. For very high quality still life photographs, the Sinarback user can also make use of the 4-shot mode, which delivers full color information in every pixel without interpolation.

Accurate color reproduction Because CCD area sensors have color characteristics that are different from those of output devices such as monitors, film exposers or printing presses, raw data has to be treated with complex mathematical processes in order to make the final result appear natural to viewers of the output. Sinar succeeded in perfecting these color computations. With the integration of the Sinar ColorCatcher Engine in the Sinar

With the Sinar ColorCatcher, the Sinar CaptureShop™ software for the Sinarback guarantees the very best color rendition, not just of critical skin tones, but of the entire subject.

10

Digital Photography CaptureShop™, the Sinarback user has a tool at his disposal that assures the best possible reproduction of color. During a shoot-out in Germany, during which various professional digital backs were tested, expert professionals praised the faithful color reproduction of the Sinarback: “The reproduction of skin tones by the Swiss digital back is the clear winner of the test”. In order to maintain the outstanding quality of the image data throughout subsequent manipulation, the Sinar CaptureShop™ supports a workflow based on ICC profiles.

All about colors For the photographer, the accurate display of color values is an important instrument for evaluating a picture. The exact values are constantly being updated in an infowindow of the Sinar CaptureShop™ as the info pipette is moved across the image. In addition to raw data and export values, relative exposure values (EV) are also indicated. The display of exposure values makes it possible to judge the effect of the toning curve, because the values of a linear curve are displayed in addition to the values of the active curve.

Moiré pattern suppression All digital 1-shot color cameras with mosaic filters tend to generate colored moiré patterns in photographs of structured subjects such as, for instance, regular patterns or fabrics. In order to suppress the effect of this phenomenon, Sinar developed an efficient moiré suppressing system for the Sinarback, which consists of a softwareand a hardware component. Sinarback users can avail themselves of a Software-

Moiré-Suppressing-Plug-in for the Sinar CaptureShop™. Because there is no single setting that yields equally good results in all photographs, the plug-in is equipped with an adjustment slider that enables the user to adjust the degree of moiré suppression to the respective subject. The software interpolates the image once again and then displays the result when the interpolation process has been completed. As far as hardware is concerned, every Sinarback 23 digital back is equipped with a built-in sophisticated and unique hardware anti-Moiré system that largely suppresses the formation of Moiré patterns already during the exposure phase. Sinarback 22 models can be upgraded with that system at any time.

The contact sheet: everything at a glance Another very practical tool of the Sinar CaptureShop™ is the contact sheet. Used as a browser, it makes it possible to view all the images in the folder at a glance. Thanks to the extremely fast data communication of the Sinarback, exposure sequences in the 1-shot mode can be made with intervals of less than one second, and every image is displayed immediately on the contact sheet in one of three optional sizes. That in turn enables the photographer to select pictures quickly, give them titles and file them in the folder of his choice without ever leaving the contact sheet.

Merge with drag-and-drop

drop feature, any two images from the contact sheet are brought into the merge window. The degree of blending of the two images is subject to the adjustable merge values and is displayed in the preview window. The combined image can then be exported as a TIFF- or a Photoshop file.

Batch Processing In order to improve the workflow, especially for large assignments, batch application plug-ins have been incorporated in the software. A selection of images is simply dragged from the contact sheet into the batch-apply plug-in and then settings are selected that are to be applied to all the selected pictures. With a mouse click, the software opens each picture in sequence, applies the setting that has been chosen and files it again. In similar fashion, the batch export plug-in opens all selected images and exports them in accordance with the selected export settings (file format and bit depth) into the export folder chosen for this purpose.

Online help The Sinar CaptureShop™ supports the Apple explanations (talking bubbles help). In addition, many windows include a help button with a question mark. When one clicks on this button, the Sinar CaptureShop™ automatically starts the selected internet browser and displays the corresponding information in the online help. Sinar recommends the installation of an internet access so that you can benefit from the newer versions of Sinar CaptureShop™ software.

The merge plug-in offers new methods of superimposing images, i.e. of creating double exposures. Using the drag-and-

By means of a standard color chart, the user can perform a color calibration for his specific application that is fine-tuned to the most subtle color nuances.

The contact sheet makes it possible to view all the images in the folder at a glance. Batch processes and merge functions can be activated conveniently by the drag-and-drop method.

Sinar Macroscan

Digital large format: Macroscan with the Sinarback Photographers are occasionally confronted with subjects that require especially high resolution that can not be achieved even with the 3072 × 2048 pixel CCD sensor in the Sinarback. Examples: large photographs of subjects with very fine structures and reproductions of works of art or old maps. For this kind of application, which up to now had been the domain of chemical large format photography, Sinar developed the Macroscan, which produces an effective image area of approximately 4.5 × 6 cm. Every Sinarback, regardless of the size of the sensor, can be upgraded to Macroscan function by means of a special sliding adapter for the Sinar p2 camera. The Sinar Macroscan Adapter can be used without any modifications on the digital back with the Sinarback 22 as well as with the Sinarback 23.

Illustration on the adjacent page: The reproduction of old maps for purposes of documentation, like this one of the town of Schaffhausen of the year 1820, is one of many possible applications of the Sinar Macroscan. With kind permission by the city archives of Schaffhausen. Original size approx. 130 × 100 cm.

... and this is how it works For images with the Macroscan, the computer controls the shifting of the Sinarback into four separate adjacent locations. For finer detail rendition and optimal color fidelity, exposures are best made in the 4-shot mode. The software then automatically assembles the resulting sixteen “images” with pixel accuracy. The result is an image area up to four times the size of the sensor area and a resolution of approximately 20 million pixels. A file size of up to 100 MB is achieved, without interpolation, depending on the model of the Sinarback being used and the respective size of the CCD sensor chip.

Advantages The Sinar Macroscan has the following great advantages: 1. Only one system is required. The Sinarback is versatile: it can be used for all photographic situations. 2. The outstanding color- and image qualities of the Sinarback yield superb images that up to now could only be achieved with line scanners. 3. The large image circle and the versatile adjustment capabilities of view 13

cameras can be used to optimal advantage. 4. Of course, the flexibility of using all types of illumination is preserved with the Macroscan, thanks to separate exposures: flash, tungsten, HMI or daylight. 5. Even with the Macroscan Adapter in place, the swing and tilt axes of the Sinar p2 remain functional on the image plane of the Sinarback.

Sinarcam: The uncompromised Digital Camera The Sinarcam 1 combines a digital adapter for the Sinar view camera system and a complete, compact digital studio camera in a single versatile unit. The focusing image can be viewed on the computer monitor as a high-resolution live-video image of any desired size. In combination with the Leaf Volare digital back, the Sinarcam 1 becomes a high-grade digital studio camera for all kinds of still life images with flash, continuous-, or mixed illumination. Its universal adaptability features the possibility of quickly and easily converting the compact camera into a professional camera (by attaching it to a Sinar p2 Camera).

The adaptation principle of the Sinarcam permits the attachment of lenses from a great variety of manufacturers. In addition to the special Sinaron Digital lenses in DB mounts (with the Sinar p2 view camera), the Compact version of the camera can also be used with lenses from Nikon, Olympus, Leica R, Hasselblad and Mamiya 645. Hasselblad and Mamiya lenses used for this purpose are mounted on a special shift board that provides the compact version of the Sinarcam with the capability of perspective correction. The Leaf Volare Digital Back produces images with a resolution of 3,072 × 2,048 15

pixels at a color depth of 14 Bit per color (16,384 gray tones). Thanks to the HVTwist, the image format can be changed from a vertical to a horizontal format with a single hand motion, without having to detach the digital back. The optional Color Shop software expansion is already incorporated in the imaging software and it can be activated by means of a hardware key (dongle). This software makes professional quality color separations possible with all the corrections that are necessary for that purpose (color, scaling, unsharp masking).

Accessories for the Sinarcam APERTURE CONTROL SINARCAM 1 551.33.003

The Compact version of the Sinarcam 1 can be attached to a Sinar p2 camera at any time, thus creating an adjustable professional digital camera in an easy manner. In order to retain the convenience of Sinaron Digital Lenses in DB Autoaperture mounts, this aperture control is required. It is controlled by means of a control cable from the Sinarcam. Length of the control cable: 90 cm (36″).

SINARCAM TRIPOD ADAPTER 2 551.33.014

Makes it possible to mount the compact version of a Sinarcam directly on a tripod with a 3/8″ thread. The built-in spirit levels permit an easy alignment of the camera and an hexagonal hole permits the attachment of a bellows lens hood by means of a filter rod.

CARRIER FRAME WIDE 433.26.020

This carrier frame ensures that the swingand tilt axes are positioned on the image surface of the CCD sensor when the Sinarback is used with a Sinarcam 2 on a Sinar p2 camera. This fully preserves the proven 2-point plane of sharpness positioning method of the Sinar p2 camera. This is not the case when the normal carrier frame 433.26 is used instead of the Carrier Frame Wide.

17

Digital Photography LCD MONITOR 10.4″ 551.33.019

Active matrix color LCD monitor (TFT) with an image area of 211 x 158 mm (10.4″ diagonal) that can be attached to any existing Sinarcam by means of a holder that fits directly between the tripod and the camera. Sometimes the computer monitor standing on a desk is just a little too far away from the Sinarcam for convenient evaluation of the live video image. With the LCD monitor, the live video image is located exactly where it is the most useful: right at the camera. The operation of the monitor with a cord-free light pen is practical and convenient. Dimensions: (width x height x depth) 290 x 255 x 37 mm or 111/2 x 10 x 11/2″. Weight: 2.0 kg / 4.4 lb. The package includes a power supply, cables, software, light pen and holder.

SINARCAM MOBILE CASE 551.33.019

For digital photography with the Sinarcam away from the studio (as in hotel rooms, sport arenas, industrial sites, trade locations, etc.), we recommend the sturdy Sinarcam Mobile Case. Just one case accommodates: Macintosh Desktop Computer, keyboard, LCD color monitor with holder, Sinarcam with tripod adapter, two lens boxes, power supply units and a multiple outlet rack. The outfit consists of: Case, LCD Monitor 551.33.019, multiple outlet rack and four sturdy plug-in rollers. Dimensions: approx. 64 x 50 x 38 cm or 25 x 20 x 15″.

MACBETH COLORCHECKER CHART 751.43

Color reference chart for optimal color calibration of Sinarback digital backs (see page 11).

MANUAL RELEASE CABLE SINARBACK 551.43.060

With this cable release, in addition to the release via the computer keyboard, the Sinarback can also be activated conveniently from the camera. A built-in switch permits the live video focusing image to be turned on or off. Length: 60 cm/24″.

Digital Photography Bellows Lens Hoods When a lens is used without a hood, stray light from outside the subject area can cause a noticeable reduction in contrast. A bellows lens hood, therefore, is not a luxury in professional photography, it is a requisite. But a bellows lens hood does its job only when it is properly adapted to the angle of view of the lens being used, and here the Sinar System offers several solutions. The main part of the bellows lens hood is the multipurpose bellows. In the most

basic case – when no adjustments have been made on the camera – a multipurpose bellows can be attached to the lens standard with a simple rod and two bellows holders. When the camera has been adjusted, the simple rod is replaced by a jointed rod. The most universal arrangement – especially when a filter holder is being used – is the use of one or more multipurpose standards, with which a bellows lens

hood can be set up very accurately and with excellent stability. The necessary additional room at the front of the optical bench can be obtained by attaching one of the three different rail extensions. Bellows Hood Masks 1 and 2 make it possible to control the limitation of the light path even in difficult situations. Bellows Hood Mask 2 also serves as a flexible viewfinder. Its adjustable blades permit the simulation of various picture proportions and focal lengths.

relative radius of image circle

Conventional Lens The MTF (modulation transfer function) curve shows the contrast transfer (in dependence of the image circle radius) of a 300 mm conventional view camera lens at (top to bottom) 5, 10 and 20 line pairs/mm.

Sinaron Digital Lens This curve shows the contrast of an 80 mm Sinaron Digital lens (equivalent to 300 mm in 4x5″) at 10, 20 and 40 line pairs/mm. Note that the digital lens performs better at 40 lp/mm than the conventional leans does at 20 lp/mm. Thanks to the better contrast and resolution Sinaron Digital lenses are best suited for digital photography.

LENS ADAPTER BOARDS FOR THE SINARCAM COMPACT 556.63.010 – 556.64.061

When the Sinarcam is used in its compact version, adapter boards permit the use of other lenses in addition to the Sinar Digital Lenses, such as Hasselblad, Mamiya, Nikon, Olympus and Leica. Lens boards with automatic springloaded aperture control (auto) automatically stop the lens down to the preselected working aperture when the live focusing image is turned off, thus enhancing the ease of operating the Sinarcam Compact even further. A special shifting board that permits perspective correction is available for Hasselblad- and Mamiya 645 lenses.

Various Digital Accessories EXPOLUX SHUTTER XT 522.21.008

The microprocessor-controlled rotating blades equipped with stepping motors ensure uniform exposures, even with short exposure times. In digital applications, the shutter is controlled directly from the computer via the Expolux RS 232 Power Supply 522.21.046. The range of exposure times extends from 1/500 second to several hours in steps of 1/10- 1/3- or 1/2 aperture steps. Aperture values that can be called up automatically range from f/4 to f/128, depending on the DB lens). A behind-the-lens 100 mm filter holder 547.41 is included. The Expolux XT Shutter is used on digital Sinar p2 cameras in conjunction with 1-shot digital backs (such as Color Crisp Carnival, Dicomed BigShot 4000, and others).

EXPOLUX TRICOLOR SHUTTER 522.21.002

Same features as the Expolux XT Shutter 522.21.008, but with a built-in filter wheel (red-, green- and blue filters) for digital imaging with CCD area chips. This eliminates the need for an external filter wheel and permits the use of a lens hood. Can be controlled directly from the computer via the Expolux RS-232 Power Supply 522.21.046. The fastest exposure time is 1/8 second. The Expolux Tricolor Shutter is used on digital Sinar p2 cameras in conjunction with 3-shot digital backs (such as the Dicomed 1000 /3000 and others).

Additional accessory parts that are needed for the respective adaptations of digital backs are listed on page 27.

EXPOLUX POWER SUPPLY RS 232 522.21.046
