De : Jessica Orellana [mailto:[email protected]] Envoyé : jeudi 30 janvier 2003 05:48 Objet : Enrolment and Welcome Email 30 January 2003 Dear Study Abroad and Exchange students, I hope that you are all excited about your approaching semester or year at the University of Wollongong. I look forward to meeting all of you at Orientation, beginning on 24 February. Enrolment (Registration) Enrolment will take place on campus on the afternoon of Monday, 24 February 2003. Most courses (except for courses offered by the Faculties of Education, Creative Arts and Law) at the University of Wollongong do not operate on a quota basis, you will therefore not be disadvantaged by enrolling on this day. The Study Abroad and Exchange staff and Faculty staff have been working towards having your study plans pre-approved before your arrival. Confirmation of your course pre-approvals/disapprovals will be sent to you by email in the next couple of weeks. If you have not yet lodged a study plan with our office please send an email to [email protected] immediately. Subject descriptions can be found at the following site; http://www.uow.edu.au/student/calendar The 2003 timetable (or schedule of classes) can be found at; http://www.admin.uow.edu.au/sid/owa/timetab.timetable_page If, upon your arrival at the University of Wollongong, you decide to make a change to your study plan you will have to speak to an Academic Adviser. They will be available during the enrolment sessions in orientation week. Remember that you must satisfy pre-requisites for all subjects through previous studies at your home university and you may be required to prove this. So we recommend bringing an original copy of your latest academic transcript and subject outlines to Wollongong. Orientation Program Orientation commences on Monday, 24 February 2003, with registration at 8.30am in the foyer of Building 67 (the McKinnon building). The McKinnon Building is a main feature and can be found on the campus map at the following website; http://www.uow.edu.au/about/campusmap/map.html. The Study Abroad and Exchange Orientation program will soon be available on the UOW website, a link can be found at http://www.uow.edu.au/discover/international/studyabroad/index.html at the bottom of the page. Printed copies of this program will also be available in your Welcome Package at each Hall of Residence and a more detailed program will be given to you at Orientation Registration on Monday, 24 February, 2003. If you will be living in private accommodation in Wollongong, please email us with your postal address, or visit the Study Abroad Office before 24 February to pick up a copy of the Welcome pack.

Overseas Student Health Cover-OSHC All students (except those from Sweden and Norway who are covered by their government health insurance) have paid for OSHC as a condition of their student visa. Your Medibank Private cards (the OSHC provider) will be available on Monday, 24 February, at Orientation Registration. For more information about your level of coverage, please refer to the following website http://www.medibank.com.au/ We strongly recommend that you take out additional insurance to cover you for physiotherapy, dental and optical services, as well as medical evacuation and repatriation expenses as these are not included in OSHC. Airport Pickup If you wish to use this free service and have not yet organised your airport pickup, please complete the online Airport Pickup Application Form found at http://www.uowaccommodation.com/. If you have any queries please contact Leanne Robinson by telephone on +612 4221 5649 or by emailing [email protected] Housing questions For all housing enquiries, please contact the relevant Hall of Residence; Campus East/Kooloobong/Gundi/Graduate House · Mary Sparks: +612 4221 5562 (or 3351) or [email protected] International House/International House Apartments · Sharon Peaston: +612 4221 5250 or [email protected] Weerona College · Sandy-Lee Riley: +612 4221 5240 or [email protected] Email After you have completed enrolment (on Monday, 24 February 2003) you will receive a “Unix” username and password. Your new email address will be in the form of [email protected]. These details will be printed at the top of your provisional enrolment record. You can forward other email accounts to this email address through the University’s webmail service. Your username and password are required to access the internet from any computer connected to the University server. At UOW, you are not permitted to access or send emails through services such as hotmail or yahoo. Banking advice Many students are concerned about banking and organising their funds for studying in Wollongong. We recommend you bring a small amount of Australian dollars in cash for emergencies upon arrival, and carry the remainder of your money in the form of credit/international debit card, or Australian dollar travellers cheques. US dollar travellers cheques can be cashed at banks, but are not accepted by Halls of Residences or shops. Most students open an Australian bank account soon after their arrival. If you do open an account soon after your arrival, you will only need your passport as a form of identification. Additional forms of identification will be required if you open an account 6 weeks or more after your arrival (details available from banks). Consult your home bank or credit provider before departure to find out if daily limits apply to your credit/international debit card, and what fees an international transaction attracts. These can vary significantly, and can be quite costly. The most widely accepted credit and international debit cards in Australia are Visa and Mastercard. American Express is not as widely accepted.

Travelling Extreme Adventures, a student-oriented travel company, have organised weekend trips during Autumn 2003, for UOW Study Abroad and Exchange Students to such places as Jervis Bay, Port Stephens, the Hunter Valley, Kangaroo Valley and the Blue Mountains. They, along with Waves Surf School, Backpackers Travel Centre and Sydney Surf Experience will be available at Orientation for you to talk to. There is also an STA (Student Travel) branch on campus. Exams and Return Travel The exam timetable will not be available until mid-way through Autumn Session. It is not possible to arrange early exams, so do not finalise your travel plans until the exam timetable is released. Most other questions that you have will be answered during Orientation Week through presentations and materials given to you. However if you have an urgent enquiry please feel free to contact us by emailing [email protected] We look forward to welcoming you all to the University of Wollongong at Orientation on Monday, 24 February, 2003.
